ADJUSTABLE RAKE.
Application filed November 8, 1919. Serial No. 336,725.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA M. CALLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Rake, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an adjustable rake, one of its objects being to provide a simple, compact and efficient device which can be folded readily so that it will occupy but little space.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is designed especially for use in combing through leaves'and grass for the purpose of finding lost golf balls, it being possible readily to adjust the head of the device to active position relative to the handle, and to quickly fold the head to position parallel with the handle so that the device can be compactly stored.
Another object is to provide a device of the character described which can be used.
for lifting balls from the ground.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and ar-.
rangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, its folded position being indicated by broken lines, and the handle being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a section through the head of the device.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the head of the device from which extend parallel curved teeth 2 and extending from the middle portion of the head is an ear 3 provided with a semicircular slot 4 which is concentric with a pivot 5. This pivot serves to connect-the ear 3 to a shank 6 projecting from one end ofa handle 7 and a clamping screw 8 engages the shank and is adapted to slide within the slot 1 when the screw is loose.
It will be understood that, by loosening When it is desired to use the device for finding a lost ball,.the screw 8 is loosened, and the head 1 is adjusted angularly to a position at right angles to the handle. The screw is then tightened and the teeth can be combed through leaves, grass, and the like. When the ball is found the teeth can be inserted under it and swung to substantially horizontal positions so that the ball will roll along two of the teeth and against the head 1. lVith the ball thus supported the device can be raised to bring the ball withinreach of the hand. The'slot 4 is of such length as to limit the swing of-the head handle. y
What is claimed is i A rake comprising a handle, a shank thereon. a head, an ear extending from the middleportion of the head, a pivotal connection between the ear and the shank, said ear bearing on the shank and having a semicircular slot concentric with the pivotal connection, a clamping device extending through the slot and engaging the shank to hold the head against movement'about its pivot, said device cooperating with either end of the slot to limit. the swinging movement of the head in either direction when brought to position parallelwith the handle, and curved teeth extending from the head said teeth being adapted when the head is parallel with the handle, to straddle the handle. V In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signatui'e in the presence of two witnesses.
