CHARLES L. WAGANDT, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FLAME-SPREADER FOR OIL-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 55, EM 2.
Application filed May 15, 1911. Serial No. 627,211.
"To all whom it may concern:
'i'laine Spreaders for oil burners, and the priiiiary object of the invention is the provision of a fiaine s .ireadcr having a wick ringprovided with an. outwardly projecting wick flange which is provided with pertorated'portions above and below the ring to provide a mixing chamber and cooling chamber sinnularly of the flame spreader sleeve.
A further of the invention is the provision or llan'ic spreader having :1. cvlindrical perforated body adapted to lit in and. carry the wick ring said wick ring being provided with an outwardly formed recessed or beaded portion terminating in a-oentrallv imperforate outwardly extending wick flange, the portion above and below said wick flange being perforated to provide, when the sleeve of the spreader proper is within the ring, an annular cooling and nixing chamber above and below the wick flange.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which .will appez as the d 'iption proceeds. the invention resides in the con'ibination and arrangement of parts and in the detailsot construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being" understood that changes in tlie n'ecise embodiment of inl l above said [tango and projecting inwardly vention herein disclosed can be madewithin the scope of what claimed without departinn from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Fignre l is a bottom plan view of the flame spreader. Fig. 2 is vertical central sectional view thereof taken on the line X-X, of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, designates the cap of the spreader which is provided with a downwaroll projecting cvlintlrical perforatinl portion or sleeve B. The lower edge of the said sleeve 1 is adapted to rest upon the rim t? of the collar D. the said collar being; provided at. its upper edge with the recessed or beaded portion which terniinatcs in the outwardly projecting annular wick llange E. Below said wick 'tlai'ige E, in the inclined portion F which forms an ann'ul r recess or chamber about the body providing an oven burning wi it of the spreader. are the perlin-aiions, while and parallel with the same but out 0] contarl with the sleeve ll. is an iuipcrloratc rini G, whose connecting; portion with the flange l) mlora an outlet in the annular compartment formed bv the flange l and riin G, above the flange E and below the rim (l thereby providing an annular cooling chau'ibcr or compartment for the wick. llangc. liy this construction it will be seen that the air coining through the air passage will enter the perforations oi" the sleeve ll and into the chamber formed by the recess at the top (it the ring: 1). thus forming and permitting the air to pass thr ch the perforations at i against the top of the wick under the flange 1*). Any air which passes upnard and strikes the under side oi the rim G will be d-vliected and torccd through the openings ll so as to provide a cooling means for the top ol. the wick llango ll. llv this means it will be seen that the mixing and cooling chamber is carried bodily by the ring which carries the Wick flange and that. the sleeve ll is a plain (vlindrical perforated sleeve.
By providing the ='.irtorations i in the collar l) the go. point-lire of the with flange against the up per edge of the wick and upon the rear or inner side of the wick will bepermitted egress through said L)t,ei"l.'orations l into the mixing; chamber lmrincd by the annular portion of the collar and into the More ll thus and a 1 the smile time preventing incrustation upon the upper edge thereot below the wick flange.
What is claimed is:
1. ll tlanio s n'eadcr, having a perforated sleeve, and a. collar 'surroinnling and carried at the lower end thereof, said collar having; an outwardly projecting ain'iularlv disposed and. recessed. upper end p roviiflingg aninilarly parallel wick flange and ring, the p the collar above and below the wicl; being perlin'ated.
A. llanic .-'-7})l(-itltfl, having a perto "lied slee e open at its lower end, and a slip-on collar lit ing upon the ever end exteriorl fl :1 d havn; at its upper end an.
0.5 the sleeve annnlarl i' recessed portion providing av lower wick tlangeand an upper ring parallel thereto.
3. A Home spreader, having a perforated (\(l as at It to provide a mixing chamber.
sleeve open atits lower end, and a slip-on collar fitting upon the lower end exteriorly of the sleeve and having at its upper end an annularly recessed portion providing a parallel lower wick flange and an upper ring,
' the collar being perforated above and below forations upon both sides of the flange,
whereby a mixing chamber is formed annularly of the sleeve.
5. A flame spreader, having a perforated cylindrical sleeve with an open end, a collar carried thereby provided with an inturned upper edge and with an intermediate annularly disposed recessed portion, the inturned upper edge being imperforate, and a wick flange formed annularly and intermediate of the recessed portions, and circumferentially disposed with relation to the collar, a por tion above and below the wick flange being perforated so as to permit air entering the recessed portion to be projected above and below the wick flange.
6. A flame spreader, having a perforated cylindrical sleeve, a collar carried at the lower end thereof and provided with an inturned upper edge and with an intermediate annularly projecting portion, the inturned upper edge being imperforate, and
,flange being perforated, the p and wick flange forming an annularly disa wick flange formed intermediate of the inturned upper edge and the annularly projecting portion, a portion above and below lower end thereof and provided with an inturned upper edge and a lower parallel wick flange, the said upper edge and wick flange forming an annularly disposed mixing "chamber about the sleeve, with gas relief means below the wick flange.
8. A flame spreadcr having a perforated cylindrical sleeve, a collar carried at the lower end thereof and provided with an inturned upper edge and lower pa 'allel wick flange, the portions of the collar between the edge and Wick flange and below the wick said upper edge posed mixing chamber about the sleeve, while the perforations below the wick flange form gas relief means in communication with the sleeve.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. VAGANDT.
