OIL-BURNER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application led May 23, 1907. Serial No. 375,226.
4oil burner of this character which will be simple in construction, cheap in manufacture and ei'licient in operation and which will produce perfect combustion of the oil, with the result that crude oil will becomea cheap and perfect fuel.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my new oil burner; Fi 2 is a section and Fig. 3 is a sectional detai showing the damper.
Upon the top of the base a is mounted the conical wall b of the combustion chamber c. The conical wall is rovided near its top with a rim or flange 5 which supports the drum e. The latter: in turn supports the top f formed with the holes g and a central pipe h in which is mounted a pipe c formed with outwardly Haring walls m at its lower end. These flaring walls direct the iiame and heat into the parts below them and cause in this way better combustion of the fuel which d f h c l d SVH lite upperen o t e ie is'si pe teca to the top n of vifhlich is secliired a chailii o which extends down through the pipe k into the tube p seated in the fire-pot g in the combustion chamber c. In the pipe 7c, are formed holes r and between` the cap h and the pipe h is mounted a circular damper or air valve s formed with holes adapted to register with the holes 1 when the damper s is turned, thereby controlling admission of air to the pipe k. Thetube p is formed with openings t at its lower end.
The oil trickles down the chain o into the tube p and is heated in its descent through the pipe 7c by the heat from the walls thereof. v
The air entering throughl the holes in the damper s and the holes r in the pipe ,7c flows down through the pipe 7c and expands upon issuing from the mouth m. Further, the air entering through the openings t in the lower end of the tube p flows upwardly burning any of the oil which has trickled down to the lower end of the chain o.V Thus, two flames are created, one ascending vand the other descending; and these two iiames meet midway between the mouth m and the upper end of the tube p and an intense heat is created with the result that all the oil is converted into vapor and consumed.
I claim l.V In an oil burner, the combination of a suitable source for the supply of oil; a pipe connected with said source an-d formed with an aperture for the admissionof air at its upper end and having downwardly diverging walls at its lower end; a chain which extends into said ipe and down which the oil trickles; av tu e located below said downwardly diverging walls and formed with openings in its lower edge, said tube being open at its endo posed to said walls; and a casing having a c osed bottom upon which the lower edge of said tube is su ported.
2. In an oil burner, the combination of a suitable source for the supply of oil; a pipe connected at one end with said source and formed with apertures forthe admission of air, the other end of said pipe being formed with downwardly diverging walls; a chain whichextends through said pipe and down which the oil trickles; a tube which is formed with openings at one end and into which said chain extends, said tube being located below said flaring walls; and a fire-pot in which said tube is mounted.
3. In an oil-burner, the combination of a casing; a fire-pot mounted within said casing; a tube the lower edge of which is formed with openings and rests upon the bottom of said fire-pot, said tube having its upper end open; means for leading the fuel to said tube; means for admitting air to the top of said casing; and means for directing air upon the outside of said tube, the air entermy hand at said Russell this 17th day of ing said tube through the openings in its May, A. D. 1907, in the presence of the two lower edge and passing thence upwardly undersigned Witnesses.
through said tube, and the upper end of the WILLIAM C. KIRCHIIOFF. 5 latter being separated by an interval from Witnesses:
the last-named means. AURELIUs L. Voomns,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set i WILLIAM J. ROE.
