Be it known that I, ALFRED II. HUMPHREY, a. citizen oi? the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State oi: New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lamps of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas lamps.
The main objects of my invention are:
First, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted type. i
Second to provide in a gas lamp of the inverted type an improved structure in which the primary air supply is delivered without contamination by the escaping products of combustion.
Third, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted type in which the parts are so formed and arranged as to prevent their becoming over-heated.
l ourth to provide an improved gas lamp which is compact and attractive in appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Referring to the drawings, the gas pipe coupling member 1 in the structure illustrated is p ovided with an arm 2 controlled by a valve, designated generally by the numeral As the valve forms no part of my present invention it is not further described herein. The coupling member 1 is provided with a nozzle member l provided with a nozzle valve 5. The nozzle member i is arranged to deliver downwardly.
The mixing tube 6 in the structure shown in detail in Fig. II is formed of porcelain and is disposed with its upper end below the gas delivery nozzle to receive the gas therefrom. The air inlet member 7 into which the upper end of the mixing tube projects has side air inlet openings 8. The coupling member 1 also is shouldered at 9 to receive the upper end of the air inlet member. The mixing tube is threaded at 10 to receive the burner body 11. This burner body is alsopreferably formed of porcelain'and has a. central delivery chamber 12- and a. plurality of tip chambers 18 grouped about the central delivery chamber. The central delivery chamber and these tip chambers are cylindrical. The central delivery chamber is internally threaded to receive the threaded portion of the mixing tube, while the burner tip chambers are internally threaded to re ceive the burner tips 1%, which are also preterably formed of porcelain. The burner tip chambers 13 are so positioned that their circumferences intersect the circumferences of the delivery chamber providing communithe flange of the mixing tube and has an upwardly facing shoulder 21 at the outer edge of the curved portion and a downwardly inclined portion 22 beyond the shoulder.
The plate has a downturned rim 23 at its outer edge. Disposed above the plate to inclose the upper end of the mixing tube is a downwardly flaring primary air supply casing 24:. The lower edge of the casing is disposed within the shoulder of the deflector plate (see Fig. TI), its upper edge being arranged between the shoulder of the coupling member and the upper end of the air inlet member. The air supply casing 24 has an air inlet opening 25 at one side and close to the deflector plate.
I preferably provide a downwardly flaring partition 26 for the air supply casing. The upper end of this partition is engaged on the lower end of the air inlet member, while its lower end is provided with an outturned flange 27 resting upon the deflector plate and secured thereto by the bolts 28.
The flange portion 22 or the portion which projects beyond the air supply casing 2a is provided with discharge holes 29 for the products of combustion, there being an im perforate or guard portion 30 below the air inlet 25 to guard the same from the products of combustion. It will be noted that the discharge holes 29 for the products of combustion and the inlet opening 25 for the primary air supply casing are in nearly the same horizontal plane.
The terms primary air supply anct secondary air supply are used by me in this application to designate the air delivered with the gas through the mixing tube and the air delivered to the burner at the point of combustion respectively, as these terms are quite commonly used and I believe well understood in the art when used in this relation.
Below the deflector plate is an upwardly flaring flue member 81. This flue member 31 is provided with an upwardly directed flange 32 at its upper edge fitting into the rim 23 of the deflector plate. For convenience in manufacturing the line member is preferably formed in an upper and lower section united by a telescoping joint at 33, the lower section being downwardly flared. The lower end of this flue is slightly above the plane of the mantles. The outer casing member 34 is flared upwardly and provided with a channellike bead 35 at its upper edge embracing the edges of the deflector plate and flue member and constituting a finish at this point. This outer casing has a globe supporting collar 36 at its lower end, the neck of the globe 37 being arranged within the collar and supported by the globe supporting members 38. As the details of the globe support form no part of my invention I do not further illustrate or describe the same herein.
The casing 34 is provided with secondary air inlet openings 39 from which the air passes downwardly through the top of the globe to the burner. The globe 37, of which I have shown only a part, is preferably closed at its lower end.
The pilot burner 4E0 is connected to the arm etl of the gas pipe coupling member 1 by means of the conduit 42. A valve 43 regulates the delivery of gas through the conduit.
The pilot burner i0 is formed of porcelain or other suitable earthy non-heatconducting material and has a combustion chamber at open at the bottom. The side walls of the combustion chamber are preferably provided with relatively small openings 45. The pilot burner is preferably pro vided with acylindrical portion at its top, a cylindrical portion at its mouth and a tapered intermediate portion forming, in eflect, a downwardly expanding combustion chamber. The peculiar shape of this chamber, however, has its advantages, although considerable modification is possible with satisfactory results. The diameter of the burner chamber is such that the gas burns within the chamber, that is, the flame, when properly adjusted, does not issue from or materially extend below the mouth of the burner. i
In the modification shown in Fig. VII the side openings of the burner chamber are in the form of slits 4:6.
lVith my improved pilot burner it is not necessary to provide means for flashing the same, as has been customary in lamps of this character, to prevent the pilot being extinguished when the burners are lighted as the explosion, which is always present in lighting and usually when extinguishing the lamp, does not extinguish the pilot flame, although it may be very small and a small flame is all that is required.
. In the modification shown in Figs VIII and IX I show my improvements adapted to a single tip burner. The mixing tube 4.7 is formed of metal. but has a member 48 of porcelain inserted at its upper end. The nozzle 4-9 is, in this modified structure, slightly different in shape and is threaded at 50 to receive the mixing tube. The mixing tube is arranged through the deflector plate 51 corresponding to the deflector plate 19 and having a shoulder 52 into which the lower end of the air chamber casing 2e fits.-
The flue member 53 is adapted to receive the upper end of the chimney 54 which has lugs 55 engaging eoacting lugs 56 on the flue member. The casing member 5'? sup ports a reflector or shade 58. The partition wall 26 is omitted. The flange portion of the deflector plate is provided with flue disply inlet is so disposed and protected that it is not fouled by the escaping products of combustion. Another advantage is that the parts are so arranged that they do not be come unduly heated and, further, they are readily accessible, so that the lamp is easily cared for.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe all of the various modifications or embodiments which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as cone itions may reruire or taste dictate. I desire,
however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope oi? the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1'. In a gas lamp, the combination of a supply pipe coupling member provided with a delivery nozzle, an air inlet member disposed on said coupling member to embrace said nozzle, a mixing tube disposed with its upper end in said inlet member, an
inverted burner mounted on said mixing tube, a deflector plate through which said mixing tube is disposed having an upwardly facing amiular shoulder, the portion oi": the plate beyond the shoulder being inclined downwardly and having a downturned rim at its outer edge, said plate having flue discharge openings therein on the outer side of its said shoulder, a downwardly flaring air supply casing arranged with its upper end engaging said coupling member, and its lower end disposed within said shoulder of said plate, said casing having an air inlet opening at its lower end, there being an unperforated portion of said plate below said inlet opening to guard the same from the products of combustion, a downwardly flaring partition arranged with its upper end engaging said air inlet member, its lower end being provided with. an out-turned flange resting upon and secured to said plate, an upwardly flaring flue member embracing said burner, the upper end of said flue member being telescoped with the downwardly projecting rim on said plate, and an upwardly flaring casing member having a bead-like channel at its upper edge embracing the outer edges of said plate and flue member and having a globe siuiporcing collar at its lower end and secondary air inlet openings above said collar.
9'. In a gas lamp, the combination of a supply pipe coupling member provided with a delivery nozzle and ha *ing shoulder coucentric with said nozzle, an air inlet member disposed on said coupling embrace said nozzle and having side air inlet openings and a shoulder at its lower end, a mixing tube disposed with its upper end in said inlet member and having an annular flange thereon, an inverted burner mounted upon said mixing tube, a deflector plate mounted on said. mixing tube flange, said plate having flue discharge openings therein, a downwardly flaring air supply casing disposed with its upper end between the shoul der of said coupling member and said air inlet member and its lower end on said plate within the flue discharge openings thereof, said casing having an air inlet opening at its lower end, there being an unperforated portion of said plate below said inlet opening to guard the same from the products of combustion, a downwardly flaring partition arranged with its upper end engaging said shoulder on said air inlet member and its lower end on said plate, and a flue member embracing said burner and secured to said plate on the outer side of its flue openings.

In a. lamp, the combination of a gas supply pipe coupling member provided with a downwardly directed gas delivery nozzle, an air inlet member disposed on said coupling member to embrace said nozzle, a 1l1lX- ing tube disposed to eoact with said inlet member, an inverted burner mounted upon said mixing tube, a deflector through which said mixingvtube is disposed, a downw: rdly flaring air supply casing having an air inlet openingat its lower end disposed to inclose said air inlet member and with its lower end upon said deflector, said deflector haying flue discharge openings therein at the emside of said casing, there being an imperforate portion of said deflector adjacent said inlet opening constituting shield therefor, a downwardly flaring partition arranged with its upper end below the openings of said air inlet member and its lower end sccured to said deflector, an upwardly flaring flue member embracing said burner and connected to said deflector at the outside of its said flue openings, and a casing member depending from said deflector and having a globe supporting collar at its lower end and secondary inlet openings above said collar.

In a gas lamp, the combination ol :1 gas supply pipe coupling member provided with a downwardly directed gas delivery nozzle, an air inlet member disposed on said coumember to pling member to embrace said nozzle, a mix ing tube disposed to coact with said inlet member, an inverted burner mounted upon said mixing tube, a deflector mounted on said mixing tube, an air supply casing having an air inletopenin at its lower end disposed to inclose said air inlet member with its lower end upon said deflector, said de flector having flue discharge openings there in at the outside of said casing, there being an imperforate portion of said deflector adjacent said inlet opening constituting a shield therefor, a flue member embracing said burner and connected to said deflector at the outside of its said flue openin and a casing member depending from said deflector and having a globe supporting collar at its lower end and secondary inlet openings above said collar.

In a gas lamp, the combination of a downwardly directed delivery nozzle, an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube disposed to receive gas from said nozzle and provided with a primary air inlet at its upper end, a downwardly flaring primary air supply casing embracing said mixing air inlet and having an air inlet opening adjacent its lower end, a deflector plate on said mixing tube disposed at the lower end of said casing to close and to project beyond the same and having [lue discharge openings in. its projecting portion, said plate having an imperforate portion below the said casing air inlet for deflecting the products or conn bustion therefrom, an upwardly flaring flue member disposed below said deflector plate to embrace the said discharge openings thereof, an outer casing disposed below said deflector plate to embrace said flue member, and a globe mounted on said outer casing to embrace said burner from below, said outer casing being provided with secondary air inlets above the globe.

In a gas lamp, the combination of a downwardly directed delivery nozzle, an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube disposed to receive gas from said nozzle and provided with a primary air inlet at its upper end, a primary air supply casing emoracmg said mixing irnnary air inlet and having an air inlet opening adjacent its lower end, a deflector plate on said mixing tube disposed at the lower end of said casing to close and to project beyond the same and having flue discharge openings in its projecting portion, said plate having an im perforate portion below the said casing air inlet for deflecting the products of combustion therefrom, and a flue member disposed below said deflector plate to embrace the said discharge openings thereof.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube provided with a primary air inlet, a primary air inlet casing inclosing the primary air inlet of said mixing tube, a flue member arranged below said air supply casing, the diameter of the top said flue member being substantially greater than that of the bottom of said casing, and a plate disposed between said air supply casing and said flue to close the bottom of the casing, said mixing tube being arranged through said plate with its air inlet above the plate, .said'plate having discharge openings for said flue at the out side of said casing, said casing having an air inlet adjacent said plate, there being an impe "forate portion of said plate below said air inlet for guarding the same from the products of combustion.

In a gas lamp, the combination oil an. inverted burner comprising a mixing tube provided with an air inlet, a deflector plate through which said mixing tube is disposed with its air inlet above the plate, an air supply casing arranged on said deflector plate to inclose said air inlet of said mixing tube and having an air inlet opening adjacent said deflector plate, and a flue member disposed below said deflector plate, said deflector plate being provided with flue discharge openings surrounding the base of said casing and having an imperforate portion below said casing air inlet to deflect the products of combustion therefrom.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube of porcelain threaded at its lower end to re ceive a burner and provided with a primary air inlet at its upper end, a deflector plate through which said mixing tube is disposed with its air inlet above the plate, an inverted burner of porcelain threaded upon said mixing tube, an air supply casing arranged on said deflector plate to inclose said air inlet of said mixing tube and having an air inlet opening adjacent said deflector plate, and a flue member disposed below said deflector plate, said deflector plate being pro vided with flue discharge openings surrounding the base of said casing and having an imperforate portion below said casing air inlet to deflect the products of combustion therefrom.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube of earthy material provided with a primary air inlet at its upper end, a deflector plate through which said mixing tube is disposed; wlth its air inlet above the plate, an inverted burner of earthy material mounted upon said mixing tube, an air supply easing arranged on said deflector plate to inclose said air inlet of said mixing tube and having an air inlet opening adjacent said deflector plate, and a flue member disposed below said deflector plate, said deflector plate being provided with flue discharge openings surrounding the base of said casing and having an imperforate portion below said casing air inlet to deflect the products of combustion therefrom.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising amixing tube provided with a primary air inlet, a downwardly flaring primary air supply casing inclosing the primary air inlet of said 1111X- ing tube, said casing being closed at its bottom and having an air inlet opening adjacent its lower end, a deflector member project ing outwardly at the lower end of said cas ing and having discharge openings therein for the products of combustion, and constituting a shield below said casing inlet opening to guard it from the products of combustion, an upwardly flaring flue member arranged to discharge through said openings of said deflector member, an outer casing arranged below said deflector member to embrace said flue member, and having secondary air inlets located above the lower end, and a globe mounted on said outer casing to incl ose said burner from below.
12. in a "as lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube provided with a primary air inlet, a prin'iary air supply casing inclosing the primary air inlet of said mixing tube, said casing being closed at its bottom and having an air inlet opening adjacent its lower end, a deflector member projecting out ardly at the lower end of said casing and having discharge openings therein for the products of combustion, and constituting. a shield below said casing inlet opening to guard it from the products of combustion, and a fine member arranged to discharge through said openings of said flange.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner comprising a mixing tube provided with a primary air inlet, a primary air supply casing embracing the said primary air inlet of said mixing tube and having an air inlet opening at one side and adjacent its lower end, a flue member disposed to discharge around the base of said primary air supply casing and in a plane adjacent to the horizontal plane of the air inlet opening of said casing, there being a shield below said casing inlet opening to guard the same from the products of com bustion, an outer casing adapted as a globe support arranged to embrace said flue memher, and a globe mounted upon said outer casing to inclose said burner from below, said outer casing being provided with sec ondary air inlet openings located above the lower end of said flue member.
14-, In a lamp, the combination of an. inverted burner comprising a mixing tube provided with an air inlet, a primary air inlet casing inclcsing the air inlet of said mixing tube and having an air inlet opening adjacent its lower end, and a flue member disposed. below said casing to discharge the products of combustion at the base thereof and in a plane adjacent to the plane of said casing inlet opening, said inlet opening being provided with a deflector to guard the same from the products of combustion.
15; In lamp, the combination of a mixing tube of porcelain having an integral annular flange, means for delivering gas and air to the upper end of said mixing tube, a burner of porcelain mounted upon the lower end of said mixing tube, and a deflector plate through which said tube is arranged connected to said flange thereof.
16. The combination in a gas lamp, of a burner comprising a mixing tube, a burner of porcelain having a central cylindrical delivery chamber connected to said mixing tube and' l1aving a plurality of cylindrical discharge chambers, the tip chambers being positioned so that their circumferences merge into the circumference of the delivery chamber providing communicating openings therefor, and burner tips connected to said tip chambers.
