Be it known that we, FREDERICK J. HUM- runny and I-IUBERT It. I'IUMPIIREY, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates. to improvements in gas lamps.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted burner type. Second, to provide in a gas lamp an improved arrangement of burner screens in which the screens are readily accessible for cleaning or renewal without disassembling the burner. Third, to provide an improved gas lamp of theinverted burner type in which the gas is delivered so as not to be unduly heated before reaching the burners and in which the burners are guarded from excessive heating. Fourth, to provide in a gas lamp. an improved construction in which the burner is very compact and the parts readily assembled or disassembled. Fifth, to provide an improved gas lamp having a plurality of in- 1 dividual burners in whichthe parts are comparatlvelv simple and economical 1n structure and easily assembled, and are readily accessible for the purpose of regulatlng for;
cleaning or the renewal of the parts.
Further objects, and ob ects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure, which is a preferred embodiment of our invention, is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a partof this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of our invention, a portion of the globe being broken away. Fig. II is an enlarged verticalucentral section through the structure shown in Fig. I, the gas supply pipe and certain of the parts being shown in full lines for convenience in illustration. Fig. III is a horizontal section through the chimney and burner taken on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II. Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the gas supply pipe.
The burner comprises burner members 2 and 3, the member 2 being the distributing member and a member on which the burner tips are mounted, as will be described, while the member 3 is the inlet passage or mixing tube member. The member 3 is provided with a horizontally disposed inlet passage arm el and has preferably formed integrally therewith, a pipe coupling 5 for the supply pipe, but with a laterally projecting delivery arm.
A plurality of chimneys 7 are provided having a deflector plate Sat their lower ends, with a flange'like extension 9 below the plate, extension 9 being in effect a part of a chimney divided at its upper end. The burner member 3 is arranged between the chimneys in a horizontal. position as illustrated. while the burner member 2 is arranged within the base portion 9 of the chimney. The burner member 2 is provided with lateral burner passage arms 11, which are open at their outer ends and in the structure illustrated fit the bottom portion of the chimney, the chimney being provided with openings 12 registered therewith. The burner members 2 and 3 are connected by means of screws 18 which in the structure illustrated clamp them together upon the chimney plate 8, the plate being provided with an opening registering with the delivery passage of the burner member 3. The arms 11 in the structure illustrated, are provided with ears 1 1, which are engagedby the screws 15, arranged through the chimney; the parts are thus effectively connected to and supported from the supply pipe. The chimney plate 8 projects outwardly beyond the bottom portion 9 of the chimney forming a flange 16, by which the chimney casing 17 is supported. This also supports the ring 18 for the globe 19, the ring being hinged at 20 as shown in Fig. I. When the globe support ring is open the parts-of thelamp below-the casing are exposed The burner tips 21 are connected by the tubes 22 to the nipples 23 on the undersides of the arms 11.
We provide the burner with screen devices consisting of suitable screens and holderstheretor. The burner screens 24 are arranged in cylindrical holders 25, the holders being open at their inner ends and having openings registering with the dis charge openings of the arms. These screen holders are closed at their outer ends and form closures for the outer ends of the arms 11. When the globe supporting ring is open, access is afforded to these screen holders so that they can be readily removed for cleaning or renewal of the screens. The holders, in the structure illustrated, are provided Wit-h spirally-disposed retaining lugs 26, which coact with the screws 15. The holders illustrated are cartridge-like in form with flanges at their outer. ends, the lugs 26 being formed in these flanges. The upper edges of the flanges are turned out- Wardly to form finger pieces 27. This feature of being able to remove the screens for cleaning or renewal is of particular importancewhere the lamps are used in factories, mills or the like where dust or lint are likely to pass into the burner and find lodgment in the screens. By this arrangement, the screens are located so asto be very effective in preventing explosions or back firing, or the passage of particles to the burners, which might find lodgment in, or injure the mantles. \Vhile the burners are all supplied from a central mixing or delivery chamber the screens thus located prevent explosions dueto .one burner being extinguished prior to the others.
The valve casing 28 is arranged on the outside of the chimney casing 17, and is connected to the supply pipe coupling member 3 by the coupling member arm (3, which projects laterally from the member 3. The arm 6 is provided with a seat 29 for the nipple 30 of the valve casing. The valve casing is secured to the arm (5 by means of the hollow screw 31, which is threaded longitudinally into the member 29.
The coupling screw 31 discharges through the lateral openings 33 into the inlet passage 8l of the valve casing. The valve 35 is of the rotary type. The delivery nozzle 36 is carried by the valve casing, This delivery nozzle is of the form described and claimed in our application for patent tiled concurrently herewith, and we do not, therefore, describe it in detail herein. The valve 35 is located between the coupling member 29 and the nozzle. The mixing tube 37 is arranged to receive the gas from this nozzle and in the structure detailed in Fig. II with its air inlets 38 within the casing. The tube projects into the inlet passagx arm 4 of the burner member 2. The inlet passage is provided with an enlargement -10 at its inner end into which the inner end oi. the tube 37 projects. The valve 4-1 is threaded into the burner to ccact with the inner end of the tube 37 in regulating the incoming mixture. The enlargement 40 about the inner end of the mixing tube permits the free discharge from the tube into the burner.
The pilot burner 42 is arranged through the flange 16 on the chimney and the lower offset 43 on the chimney. The upper end of this pilot burner is threaded into the elbow coupling -14, which is carried by the tube 45. The tube 45 is aranged tllrough the casing, the outer end of the tube being threaded into the valve casing 28, as shown in Fig. IX. The passage 46 connects the tube 45 with the inlet passage 34: of the valve casing. The pilot controlled by means of the valve 47, which is threaded into the valve casing, the valve being of the needle type, and coacting with the valve seat 48 formed as shown in Fig. TX. Adjustably mounted upon the valve 47 is a slotted arm 49, the arm being preferably threaded on the valve and provided with a lock nut 50.
The actuating lever 51 is rotatably.mounted on the stem 52 of the main valve. The coiled spring 53 is arranged on the valve stem, the arm 54 of the spring engaging the pin on the valve casin while the arm 56 engages the pin 57 on the lever 51. This pin 57 also engages the slotted arm 4-9'ot the pilot valve so that the two valves are actuated together. The lever 51 is actuated against the tension of the spring 53. and the spring returns it to its initial position.
On the stem 52 is a disk-like ratchet member 58, having ratchet teeth 59 struck latterally thereon. On the lever 51 is a disklike rachet member 60, having ratchet teeth 61 struck laterally thereon. These disk members are substantially identical, one being secured to the lever and the other to the valve stem. There are four teeth on these ratchet members, so that the valve is given a quarter turn at each actuation, one turn opening and the next closing the valve, or vice versa. An index (32 is mounted on the valve stem. This valve construction is simple in structure and operation and is not likely to get out of repair.
The pilot valve is effectively flashed, and remains flashed, or with the extra supply of gas delivering thereto, as long as the lever 51 is held down. When the lever is released it returns against the stop 55, actuating the pilot valve, as described. The pilot is positively operated to flash the same and to cut off the additional or flashing supply and can be regulated to adjust the amount of the flashing supply. A further advantage of this is that the pilot is flashed both on the actuation of the valve to open the main burner, and to cut it off, so that in the event of the pilot being extinguished, as by an explosion of the main burner, or through some other cause while the burners are lighted, it is, on the actuationof the valve to cut off the main burners, furnished with an extra or flashing supply of gas so that it will be relighted from the burners before they are extinguished. This is a very decided advantage as it insures the pilot being lighted when the gas is cut off from the main burners.
By placing the air inlet for the burners within the casing and arranging the parts as described, the tendency for explosions to take place when the burners are turned off is minimized. In inverted burners, where the mixing tube is arranged in a vertical or substantially vertical position, the
back pressure in the burner is some times sufficient so that as soon as the supply of gas is cut oft, there is a tendency for some of the gas to remain in the burner tube and produce a very explosive mixture, which may become ignited from the heated burners. Attempts have been made in some instances to overcome this by providing means for shutting off the supply of air to the burner on the closing of the gas valve. A mechanism to accomplish this is somewhat complicated and not entirely satisfactory. By forming the burner as we illustrate, and locating the air inlets within the casing in the path of the secondary air supply, this circulation through the burner ceases immediately, or substantially so, upon the cutting off of the gas. This is a very important feature, as it obviates the necessity of providing means for cutting off the air supply on the closing of the burners, and the liability of explosion within the burner is minimized.
In the modified construction of XI, the chimney 77 is single. The burner in this modified construction, is provided with chimney engaging portions 7 5 and 76, the chimney 77 having openings adapted to receive these. The engaging portion 76 is adapted to permit longitudinal movement of the arm in the chimney, so that in introducing the burner member, the end 76 is first inserted in this opening and moved longitudinally therein until the burner member can be swung up to position to permit the engagement of the chimney engaging member 75. The burner is then moved laterally until the shoulder 78 engages the chimney. The screw 79 retains this burner in position. The valve casing coupling arm 80 is, in this modification, a separate piece and is adapted to receive the nipple 30 of the valve casing. The screw 81 engages the end of this arm 80, the arm being provided with the laterally-delivering outlets 33 which are, in the structure shown in detail in Fig. II, located within the screw 31. The burner tube 37 projects through the casing. The flange 16 of the chimney ishere formed integrally with the upper part of the chimney, it being made of sections, as clearly illustrated.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. XII, the passage 63 is formed so that the screen 64 is arranged transversely thereof, the holder 65 being open on each side, as indicated, the passing to the burners passirig twice through the screen. This holder is provided with a bayonet slot 66, adapted to engage with the pin 67 on the burner.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. XIII and XIV, a single screen 68 is provided. This is arranged in the burner chamber so that the screen serves for all the burners. The holder 70 for the screen 68 is provided with a stem 71 projecting through the opening 72 in the chimney. On this stem is a closure 7 3 for the opening in the chimney. The head 7 4C of the holder serves as a closure for the open end of the burner chamber 69. By this arrangement, a single screen serves, as stated, for all of the burners, and the screen has all of the advantages of accessibility possessed by the preferred construction, as the burner 7 2 is located below the lower end of the casing, as is the case in such construction.
We have illustrated and described our improvements in an embodiment which, for structural reasons, we consider desirable. lVe are aware, however, that it is capable of other modifications in structural details, than those illustrated. However, as such modifications will no doubt with the aid of those here illustrated, be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, we do not attempt to illustrate or describe the same herein.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas lamp, the combination with the supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney casing; a supply pipe coupling having a lateral delivery arm projecting from said chimney a burner comprising a mixing tube, said chimney casing having an opening therein through which said mixing tube may be inserted or removed; a valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing and engaging said coupling arm and said mixing tube; and means for securing said valve casing to said delivery arm, said mixing tube being retained in position by said valve casing and coacting with said securing means in retaining the valve casing in position.
2. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a plurality of fines; a deflector plate at the lower end of said flues; a skirt portion below said plate, said plate being extended be yond the skirt portion to provide a chimney flange and having air inlet openings therein; a burner comprising a burner trip member arranged below said plate within said skirt portion of said chimney, and a horizontally disposed passage member arranged between said fines above said plate; a chimney casing arranged on said chimney flange; a mixing tube arranged in said inlet passage member and having air inlet openings within said chimney casing; and a supply valve casing arranged on said supply pipe coupling on the outside of said ehlmney easing, provided with a nozzle delivering to said mix ing tube.
3. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney, into which said supply pipe depends; a supply pipe coupling having a lateral delivery arm projecting from said chimney; a valve casing removably mounted on said arm; a nozzle carried by said valve casing; and a burner comprising a mixing tube to which said valve casing is adapted to deliver, said mixing tube being retained by said valve casing and being freely removable after said valve casing has been removed.
4. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney into which said supply pipe depends; a chimney casing surrounding said chimney and carried thereby; an inverted burner comprising an inlet passage member having a supply pipe coupling thereon and provided with a lateral delivery arm projecting from said casing; and a supply valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing, mounted on said delivery arm, said chimney being mounted on said burner.
5. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney easing into which said pipe depends; an invert-ed burner comprising an inlet passage member having an upwardly projecting supply pipe coupling thereon provided with a valve casing delivery arm projecting laterally therefrom; a supply valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing and connected to said delivery arm, said supply valve casing being provided with a gas delivery nozzle; and a mixing tube to which said nozzle delivers projecting into the inlet passage member of said burner, said mixing tube being removable through said casing.
6. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney; an inverted burner comprising a horizontallydisposed inlet passage arm having an upwardly-projecting supply pipe coupling provided with a laterally-projecting valve casing coupling arm; a chimney casing; a valve arranged on the outside of said chimney casing and having a nipple secured to said coupling arm; a mixing tube arranged in said inlet passage arm of said burner and shouldered to engage the same, said valve easing being provided with a nipple adapted to engage the outer end of said mixing tube; and a nozzle on said valve casing adapted to deliver to said mixing tube.
7. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney; an inverted burner having a horizontally-disposed inlet passage and an upwardly-prejecting supply pipe coupling provided with a laterally-projecting valve casing coupling arm projecting from said chimney; a supply valve casing arranged On the outside of said chimney and mounted 011 said arm; a gas delivery nozzle carried by said supply valve casing; and a removable mixing tube arranged to project into said burner inlet passage, said nozzle being adapted to deliver to said mixing tube, said valve casing being provided with a nipple adapted to engage the end of said mixing tube, whereby said mixing tube is retained.
8. In a gas lamp. the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a plurality of flues, a deflector plate at the lower end of said fines and a skirt portion below said plate, said plate being extended beyond the said shirt to provide a chimney flange having air inlet openings therein; a burner comprising a burner tip member arranged below said plate within said skirt and a horizontally-disposed burner passage member arranged between said flues above said plate and provided with a coupling for said supply pipe, said coupling being prowided with a laterally-projecting delivery arm; and a valve casing arranged on said arm and provided with a nozzle delivering to said passage member.
9. In a gas lamp, the combination with the supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a bot tom portion, a deflector plate at the upper end of said bottom portion projecting beyond the same to provide a flange and having air openings through the flange and a plurality of discharge portions or flues above said plate; a burner comprising a burner passage member arranged below said plate and an inlet passage member arranged abcve said plate between the flue portions of: said chimney, said inlet passage member being provided with a supply pipe coupling provided with a laterally-projecting valve casing coupling arm; a chimney casing ar-.
ranged on said chimney flange; a valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing connected to said coupling arm; a gas delivery nozzle carried by said valve casing; and a mixing tube projecting into said burner passage member arranged with its air inletwithin said chimney casing.
10. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of an outer casing; a chimney comprising a pair of discharge flues and a deflector plate at the lower end of said flues arranged within said casing, said supply pipe depending into said casing be tween said flues; a coupling member on said supply pipe having a delivery member proj ecting laterally from between said flues; a gas delivery nozzle and a valve for said gas delivery member arranged on the outside of said casing and mounted on said coupling; and a burner suspended from said coupling and provided with an inlet tube arranged between said chimney flues above said deflector plate to receive the gas from said delivery nozzle, said chimney being mounted on said burner, said casing being mounted on said chimney.
11. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of an outer casing; a chimney comprising a pair of discharge flues and a deflector plate at the lower end of said casing, said supply pipe depending into said casing between said flues; a coupling member on said supply pipe having a delivery member projecting laterally from said flues; a gas delivery nozzle and a valve for said gas delivery member arranged on the outside of said casing and mounted on said coupling; and a burner suspended from said coupling and provided with an inlet tube arranged between said chimney flues above said deflector plate to receive the gas from said delivery nozzle.
12. In agas lamp, the combination with a supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney casing; a supply pipe coupling having a lateral delivery arm; a valve casing provided with an inlet nipple adapted to engage said arm arranged on the outside of said chimney; a screw for securing said casing to said arm;
a nozzle carried by said valve casing and a burner comprising a mixing tube to which said nozzle is adapted to deliver, said mixing tube being retained by said valve casing and being freely removable after said valve casing has been removed.
13. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a burner comprising a horizontally-disposed inlet passage member having a. central downwardly-projecting delivery nipple; a mixing tube projecting into said member beyond its said delivery opening; a valve arranged in the inner end of said inlet passage member to coact with said mixing tube; a burner tip member connected to said nipple; and a deflector arranged between said inlet passage and burner tip member.
14. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a pair of discharge flues and a deflector plate at the lower end of said flues, said supply pipe depending between said flues; an inverted burner comprising a horizontally-dis posed inlet passage member arranged above said plate between said flues and having a supply pipe coupling thereon provided with a delivery arm projecting laterally from said flues, said chimney being mounted on said burner; a chimney casing carried by saidchimney; and a supply valve casing mounted on said laterally projecting coupling arm.
15. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney into which said gas supply pipe depends; a chimney casing surrounding said chimney; an inverted burner comprising an inlet passage memher having a supply pipe coupling provided with a lateral delivery arm projecting from said chimney; a supply valve casing arranged on said arm on the outside of said chimney casing, said chimney being mounted on said burner; a mixing tube arranged in said inlet passage member with its air inlet openings within said chimney casing; and a valve coacting with the inner end of said mixing tube, said valve being adapted to be manipulated from the outside of said chimney casing.
16. In a gas lamp, the combination with a supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney casing; a burner; a supply pipe coupling projecting from said chimney and provided with a valve casing delivery arm; a valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing and provided with a nipple adapted to engage said arm; and a screw threaded into said arm, said valve casing being removably supported on said coupling by said screw.
17. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a gas supply pipe depending into said chimney; an inverted burner having a horizontally disposed inlet passage and an upwardly projecting supply pipe coupling member provided with a valve coupling arm disposed horizontally above said inlet passage to project from said chimney; a supply valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney and having a nipple engaging the outer end of said coupling arm; and an attaching screw for said valve casing arranged therethrough and threaded longitudinally into said coupling arm and having a passage delivering into said valve casing.
18. In a gas lamp, the combination with the supply pipe, of a burner having a pipe coupling member thereon, provided with a laterally-projecting valve casing connecting arm; a valve casing adapted to engage said arm; and a retaining screw threaded longitudinally into said arm, said screw having a passage therein provided with lateral delivery openings.
19. In a gas lamp, the combination with a supply pipe, of a coupling member provided with a delivery arm; a valve casing provided wit-h an inlet nipple adapted to engage said arm; and a screw threaded into said arm and having a passage therein.
20. A gas lamp comprising an inverted burner provided with a horizontally-disposed inlet passage terminating in a spherically walled portion; a mixing tube projecting into the passage to deliver into the spherically walled portion thereof, there being an annular space about the inner end of said tube communicating with the discharge; and a valve adjustable longitudinally of said mixing tube and coact-ing with the inner end thereof.
21. A gaslamp comprising an inverted burner provided with an inlet passage having a spherically walled portion at its inner end; a mixing tube projecting into the passage to deliver into the spherically-walled portion thereof, there being an annular space about the inner end of said tube communicating with the discharge; and a conical valve coacting with the inner end of the tube and against which the gas is delivered from said tube.
22. A gas lamp comprising an inverted burner having an inlet passage arm, the inner end of the passage terminating in a spherically walled chamber; a mixing tube projecting into said arm to deliver to said spherically walled chamber; and a conical valve arranged for longitudinal adjustments to coact with the inner end of said mixing tube. 23. A gas lamp comprising an inverted burner having an inlet passage arm, the inner end of said arm being enlarged; a mixing tube projecting into the passage with its inner end within the enlarged portion; and a valve coacting with the inner end of said mixing tube.
24. A gas lamp comprising an inverted burner having an inlet passage member; a
mixing tube projecting into the passage; and a valve arranged in said inlet passage member to coact with the inner end of said mixing tube.

In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; an inverted burner comprising burner passage arms open at their outer ends, the chimney being provided with openings at the ends of said burner arms; screws arranged through said chimney to engage said burner passage arms; burner screens; and screen holders adapted to be inserted into or removed from said burner passage arms through said openings in said chimney, said holders being provided with retaining lugs coacting with said screws.
26. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a burner comprising burner passage arms open at their outer ends, the chimney being provided with openings at the ends of said burner arms; burner screens; and screen holders adapted to be inserted into or removed from said burner passage arms through said openings in said chimney.
9.7. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a burner comprising an arm open at its outer end, the chimney being provided with an opening in alinement with said arm; a cylindrical burner screen; a cylindrical screen holder adapted to be inserted into or removed from said arm through said openings in said chimney, said holder being provided with a spirally-disposed retaining lug; and a member on said chimney coacting with said lug.
28. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a burner comprising an arm open at its outer end, the chimney being provided with an opening in alinement with said arm; a burner screen; a screen holder adapted to be inserted into or removed from said burner through said opening in said chimney; and coacting engaging members on said chimney and holder.
29. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a chimney casing; said chimney having an opening therein below the bottom of said casing; a burner adapted to receive a screen; a burner screen; and a holder for said screen adapted to be introduced. into or removed from said burner through said openings, said holder being adapted to close said opening in said chimney when in operative position.
30. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a chimney casing; said chimney having an opening therein below the bottom of said casing; a burner adapted to receive a screen; and a burner screen adapted to be introduced into or removed from said burner through said opening.
31. In a gas lamp, the combination of the chimney, of a burner adapted to receive a screen and having an opening through which the screen may be inserted or removed without disassembling the burner; the chimney having an opening in alinement with said opening in said burner; and a burner screen holder adapted, when in operative position, to close said opening in said burner and chimney.
32. In a gas lamp, the combination with the supply pipe, of a chimney; a deflector plate therefor; a burner comprising a member arranged below said plate and an inlet passage member arranged above said plate; and a burner screen arranged in said burner member below said plate and removable through the said chimney.
33. In a gas lamp, the combination ofa chimney comprising a deflector plate and a skirt portion below said plate, said plate extending beyond the chimney to provide a flange; a chimney casing arranged on said flange; a burner comprising a burner tip member arranged below said plate; and having laterally disposed burner passage arms open at their outer ends; and burner screens in said arms, said screens being removable through openings provided for the purpose in the chimney skirt without disassembling the burner or adjustment of said casing.
34. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney; a burner comprising burner passage arms open at their outer ends fitting within the chimney, said arms being alined with openings in said chimney; and burner screens adapted to be introduced or removed from said arms through said chimney openings.
35. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney; a defiector plate therefor; a burner comprising a member having a tip thereon arranged below said plate and an inlet passage member arranged above said plate; and a burner screen arranged below said plate and removable through the walls of the chimney without disassembling the same or the burner.
36. In a gas lamp, the combination of the chimney, of a burner adapted to receive a screen and having an opening through which the screen may be inserted or removed without disassembling the burner, the chimney having an opening in alinement with said opening in said burner, and a removable burner screen holder provided with means for closing said openings in said burner and chimney when the screen holder is in operative position.
37. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney, a burner tube adapted to receive a screen device, having an opening through which the screen may be inserted or removed without disassembling the burner, the chimney having an opening in alinement with the opening in the burner tube, and a screen device adapted when in operative position to close said opening in said burner tube and provided with means for closing said opening in said chimney.
38. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney, a burner adapted to receive a screen and having an opening through which the screen may be inserted or removed without disassembling the burner, a chimney having an opening in alinement with the opening in the burner, and a removable screen provided with means for closing said openings in said burner and chimney when the screen is in operative position.
39. In a gas lamp, the combination of a chimney, a burner adapted to receive a screen and having an opening through which the screen may be inserted or removed without disassembling the burner, a chimney having an opening in alinement with said opening in said burner, a removable screen, and means removable with said screen for closing said openings in said burner and chimney when in operative position.
