To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK J. I'IUM- IHREY and HUBERT It. HUMPHREY, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas lamps.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted burner type which is adapted for use on gas of different or varying pressures and of different or varying qualities or grades. Second, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted burner type in which the burners are so formed and arranged as to be readily accessible for cleaning or adjustment without disassembling the lamp. Third, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted burner type in which the gas is delivered so as not to become unduly heated before reaching the burners, and one in which the burners are guarded. from excessive heatin Fourth, to provide an improved arrangement of pilot and connections therefor. Fifth, to provide an improved gas lamp of the inverted burner type in which the parts are quite simple in form and are easily assembled or disassembled. Sixth, to provide a lamp of this type having large candle power which is compact and attractive in appearance. 7
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
IVe accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a gas supply pipe by which the lamp is supported. The burner comprises a burner tip member 2, and a burner passage member 3. The burner tip member .2 is provided with burner arms l, having passages 5 therein communicating with the central distributing chamber (5. The structure illustrated has three burner tips.
The inlet or passage member 3 has a horizontally-disposed mixing tube or inlet passage arm 7 and a (lownwardly-projecting central delivery nipple 8. This nipple is adapted to project into the chamber 6 of the burner tip member 2, and is provided with a flange E) to which the tip member 2 is secured by means of the screws 10. The mixing tube 11 is preferably removable from the inlet passage member ;l, and projects into the same beyond the delivery nipple thereof. (see Fig. IV).
A regulating valve 19. is threaded into the burner member 3 to coact with the inner end of the mixing tube. The chamber in the inner end of the member 3 is considerably larger than the external diameter of the inner end of the mixing tube, so that there is an annular passage about the inner end of the mixing tube. The inner end of this passage member has a spherical chamber into which the inlet tube delivers.
The valve 12 is provided with a conical end disposed centrally of the tube, so that the gas issuing from the mixing tube is more or less uniformly deflected into the spherically walled chamber and passes back around the mixing tube to the discharge 8 into the discharge chamber (3 of the burner tip member 2.
The burner passage member 3 is arranged between the discharge flues 13 of the chimney and in close proximity to the deflector plate 14 at the lower ends of the fines, the inlet arm being horizontally disposed, as stated. The burner tip member 2 is arranged below the deflector plate 14 within the skirt portion 15 of the chimney. The discharge nipple of the member 3 projects through an opening provided in the plate into the member 2. see Fig. IV. Screws 1O secure the member 2 to the member 3, the screws being passed through the plate 14. A gasket 16 is arranged between the plate and the flange 9 on the member 3.
To reduce the bulk of the burner member 2. ears 17 are provided for the screws 10, the ears being arranged between the arms of the burner, see Fig. VI. plate 14 is extendedbeyond the skirt 15 to provide a flange 18 on. which the chimney casing 19 rests. The flange 18 is provided with air inlets 20, see Fig. III, through which the secondary air passes to the burners. We use the term secondary here in the sense in which it is quite commonly used in gas lighting terminology, to designate the air which is delivered to the burners at the point of combustion from the outside of the burner as distinguished from the air admixed with the gas in the burner or its mixing tube.
The casing 19 is provided with air inlets 21 at its lower end through which air enters the casing to the inlet 18 and thence into the globe 23 to the burners and also to circulate about the fines 13 and out of the casing, which is open at its upper end, the gases from the flues 13 and the air circulated up through the casing and about the lines being discharged freely, the casing above its air inlet 2]. being unobstructed except by the burner and chimney parts inclosed thereby.
A top or ceiling deflector plate 22 is mounted on the supply pipe above the easing, and in a spaced relation thereto. The
' burners are inclosed by the globe 23, which is mounted on the globe ring 24, the globe being secured within the ring by screws 25, as is common practice. The globe support ing ring 24 is provided with a hinge member 26, provided with a pair of ears 27. The coacting hinge member 28 is in the form of an angled strap which rests upon and is se- The chimney cured to the chimney flange 18 by the screws 29, its inner upturned end 30 being secured to one of the chimney flues by the screw bolt 31.
The outer end of the strap is provided with a knuckle 32, which is embraced by the cars 27 of the hinge member 26. Thepintle 33 is locked inv place by means of the spring catch or retainer 34. The catch 34 is formed of wire bent into a loop, the end of the loop being engaged over the screw 35, one arm 36 of the loop being provided with an inturned end 37 arranged through the ears 27, the other being free to engage a head with which the pintle is provided. A hook or catch 38 is mounted on the inturned end 37 of the arm 36.
The hinge member 28 is provided with a keeper 39 for the book 38, the keeper being formed by striking up a portion of the hinge member, as shown, (see Fig. IX). The globe ring 24 is retained in its closed posi tion by a catch consisting of an angled strap like keeper member 40, which rests upon and is secured to the flange 18 by means of the screw 41, its unturned inner end being secured to the other chimney fine by means of the screw 42. This keeper is provided with a key-hole slot 43 in its downwardly-projecting outer end, adapted to receive the spring pin catch 44 on the globe supporting ring. The details of this catch 44 are not here illustrated, as they form no part of our present invention.
The globe supporting ring hinge member 28 and keeper 40 for the catch ,thus arranged serve to brace the chimney flues and flange.
The deflector plate 14 is provided with an annular shoulder 45, upon which the skirt portion 15 is sleeved and secured. The chimney fiues 13 are segmental in cross sections and their outer curved or semi-circular walls fit within this shoulder. To form the flue openings in the plate segmental parts 45 are struck up therefrom. These parts are turned up at right angles to the plate and are secured to the inner walls of the lines, so that the fines are embraced by the shoulders and these parts 45, see Figs. IV and XI. it-h the parts thus assembled, they are securely supported, and being made of sheet metal, are readily formed and assembled, and when thus assembled, can be subjected to the enameling process without serious distortion.
The burner chamber 6 has an opening at the bottom between the burner tips, and is closed by the removable closure plate 46. This plate is retained by means of lugs 47, provided on the inner sides of the burner arms 4, see Figs. IV and VI. The burner chamber 6 is cylindrical in horizontal section. The cylindrical screen 48 is removable through this opening in the bottom of the burner between the arms without disassembling the burner.
The screen, in the structure illustrated, is .mounted on the closure plate 4L6, a cup-like screen holder a9 being arranged on the plate and secured thereto by means of the screws 50 which engage the disk 51., clamping the inturned edges 52 at the bottom of the screen. These screws 50 also secure the finger piece to the plate.
The edges of the closure plate 416 are spirally deflected between the notches 51-, to provide spiral or cam portions 55, so that by a turning movement of the plate, the spiral or cam portions are engaged with the lugs and the plate thus clamped in position.
With the parts thus arranged, the burner screen serves for all of the burners, and is easily removed for the purpose of cleaning or renewal should occasion require. The bottom of the delivery chamber 6 and burner member 2 is below the lower edges of the tip passage arm openings 5, so that a trap is provided for solid substances which may pass into the burner, and this can be very quickly removed without disassembling the burner, as stated. Further, this trap collects condensation when the burner is not in use, which quickly evaporated upon the lighting of the burner.
The chimney is mounted and carried by the burner. The burner is, in turn, supported by the gas supply pipe '1. The burner member 3 is provided with an upwardly-projecting coupling member 56, having a laterally-projecting delivery arm 57 which projects from the chimney thies 13, see Figs. III and IV. This coupling is pret erably formed integrally with the burner member 3.
At its outer end, the arm 57 is provided with a seat 58 for the coupling arm or nipple 59 of the valve casing 60. This valve easing is arranged on the outside of the chimney casing 19, the casing being provided with an opening 20 alined with the coupling arm 57 to receive the coupling 59. The valve casing 60 is secured to the arm 57 by means of the screw 61, threaded. longit-udinally into the arm and having a gas passage 62 therein provided with lateral delivery openings 63.
The valve 64:, which is of the rotary type, is disposed transversely of the arm 57. This valve is disposed between the nipple 59 and the delivery nozzle. The delivery nozzle is in the form of a tubular member 65 threaded into the valve casing in alinement with the mixing tube'll. The valve 66 is threaded longitudinally through the member 65.
The valve casing 60 is provided with a nipple 67 adapted to receive the end of the mixing tube. The mixing tube is shouldered at 68 to engage the end of the arm 7 of the burner member 3,and is clamped against this shoulder by the valve casing when the parts are assembled. The mixing tube 11 is removable through an opening 69 in the chimney casing when the valve casing is removed, which may be done merely by disengaging the screw (51.
V The air inlet opening 70 of the mixing tube are within the chin'inev casing, and in the path'o'l the secondary air supply, which passes into the casing through the air in lets .21 and to the burners through the air inlet. openings 20 in the flange 18, as described. This air is also free to circulate from the openings 21. about the chimney fines and out through the top of the casing, as stated.
The pilot burner Tl is arranged within the shirt portion 1.5 of the chimney, it being supported on the bottom section 72 of the gas delivery tube. This section is arranged through the skirt and threaded into the tube '3 which is, in turn,
section 1 threaded into a boss 74L provided "for the purpose on the arm 57 ot' the coupling. A passage 75 is formed in the arm 57, the valve casing being providciil with a registering passage 76 which is connected by the passages 77 and T8 with the gas passage of the valve casing. The passage 78 opens into the passage 77, and is regulated by the threaded valve 79 to control the constant supply of gas to the pilot see Figs. VII: and VIII.
The flashing valve 80 is provided with a longitudinal passage '81. communieating with the valve chamber and having a port 82 which opens into the passage 77 when the valve 80 is actuated to admit a flashing supply of gas to the pilot. A valve .l-t is provided for regulating the flashing supply; that is, the maximum delivery oil gas. The valve 80 is arranged in the valve casing 60 above the valve til, preferably in a boss-like extension on the side of the upper nipple portion 59 thereof. The valve 64- is provided with an actuating lever 83, which is mounted upon the stem thereof.
Secured to the lever 83 is a dislvlilte ratchet member 84:, while the valve stem 95 is provided with a coacting ratchet member 85. The lever, with its ratchet member, is held yieldingly in engagement with the ratchet member of the stem by the spring 86, which is coiled about the stem to press against the lever. The spring 86 is pro vided with arms at its end, the arm 87 at the outer end of the spring being engaged with a pin 88 on the lever. The arm 89 at the inner end of the spring is engaged with a pin 90 projecting from the valve casing. This pin 90 forms a stop for the lever.
The pilot valve 80 is provided with an arm 91, and is connected by the link 92 to the pin 88 on the valve lever, so that the pilot flashing valve is actuated whenever the main burner valve is actuated, either to close or open the same. The valves are connected so that the flashing of the pilot valve is positive and remains flashed, or with the extra supply of gas delivered to the pilot as long as the lever 83 is held down. Then the lever is released, it is returned against the stop 90 by means of the spring.
An index arm 93 is provided for the valve stem to indicate to the operator whether the valve is open or not. The pilot being flashed on each actuation of the valve,that is, on both its opening and its closing actuations, is quite certain to be lighted when the burners are cut off. Sometimes the pilot is'extinguished on account of explosions taking place when the burners are lighted, but it being flashed on the actuation of the valve to cut out the burners, it will be relighted before the burners are extinguished.
The mantle support 96 for the mantles 97, which are shown in conventional form in Fig. I, is preferably that shown in patent to Humphrey at all, No. 933,177, of September 7, 1909, and we do not therefore illustrate or describe the same with further de tail herein. l Vhen it is desired to remove the burner screen, the mantle supporting plate is dropped down and swung to one side, when the closure plate for the burner chamber can be removed without disassembling the lamp or disturbing the burner tips.
By the arrangement of the parts as we have illustrated and described, we produce a lamp which is adapted for use in different or varying grades or qualities of gas,that is, rich or lean gas and under different or varying pressures. It has been found in practice that many gas lamps of the inverted burner type, which would operate with one quality or pressure of gas satisfac torily, are not adapted for gas of another quality or other pressure. Our improved lamp, as stat-ed, operates satisfactorily under varying conditions without readjustment. Further, it is not likely to back fire on the lighting of the burners, or to explode on cutting them off.
Claims are not made in this application to certain features of the structure here illustrated, as applicants have made claims thereto in copending applications, Ser. No. (308,695, and Ser. No. 608,691, filed February 15, 1911, the present structure being an em bodiment of certain of the features there disclosed, and further, certain claims are made herein originally made in those applications, the structure illustrated being in some respects an improvement upon and a refinement of certain features. of the said applications the structure here illustrated being an embodiment of such inventions as now manufactured for the market.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a discharge flue, a deflector plate at the lower end of the flue and a skirt below said plate, the plate being extended beyond the skirt and having air inlet openings therein on the outside of the skirt; a casing open at the top arranged above said plate to inclose the said air inlet openings thereof and having air inlet openings at its lower end adjacent to said plate, said casing being open for the passage of air from its said air inlet openings upwardly therethrough and about said flue to its open upper end; a burner comprising a burner tip member arranged below said plate within said skirt and a mixing tube arranged in a horizontal position above said plate and in close proximity thereto and having air inlet openings within said casing adjacent to the air inlet openings thereof and adjacent to the air inlet openings of said plate; and a globe mounted to inclose the air inlet openings of said plate whereby the secondary air supply to the burner is drawn from the casing air inlets through the air inlets of said plate and air, circulates from said casing inlets upwardly through said casing and is discharged with the products of combustion from said flue.
2. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a discharge flue,a deflector plate at the lower end of the flue; a chimney casing open at the top and having air inlet openings at its lower end, said casing being open for the free passage of air from its said air inlet openings upwardly therethrough and about said flue to its open upper end; a burner comprising a burner tip member arranged below said plate and a mixing tube arranged in a horizontal position above said plate and in close proximity thereto and having air inlet openings within said casing adjacent to the air inlet openings there of, and a globe surrounding said burner and associated with said casing so that the secondary air supply to the burner is drawn from the casing air inlets and free circulation of air from said casing inlets to the inlet of the mixing tube and downwardly to the burner and upwardly through the easing is permitted. I
In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprislng a discharge flue, a deflectorjplate at the lower end of said flue and a skirt below the plate, theplate being provided with a central burner opening; a burner comprising a mixing tubje member disposed above said plate and provided with a delivery nipple registering with the burner opening of said plate, and a burner tip member disposed below said plate within the said chimney skirt and provided with a central delivery and screen chamber communicating with the delivery nipple of said mixing tube member and having a plurality of tip arms grouped about the said delivery chamber, said delivery chamber being open at the bottom between said. arms; a screen arranged in said chamber and removable therefrom through the opening in the bottom thereof; and a closure plate for said chamber removable from the bottom of the chimney skirt with out disassembling the burner otherwise than the removal of said closure.
4.. In a gas lamp, a chimney comprising a discharge flue, a deflectorplate at the lower end of said flue having a burner opening therein; a burner comprising a mixing tube member arranged above said plate and provided with a downwardly projecting nipple arranged in said opening and with ears above said plate; a burner tip member arranged below said plate and having a central chamber adapted to receive said nipple and radially disposed burner arms and ears between said arms, said chamber being open at the bottom; screws arranged through said ears on said tip member and plate to engage the ears Off said mixing tube member; a screen arranged in said chamber and removable therefrom through the opening in the bottom thereof; and a closure plate for said chamber, said plate and screen being removable without disassembling the burner.
5. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a discharge flue and a deflector plate at the lower end of said flue, said plate being provided with a burner opening; a burner comprising a mixing tube member disposed above said plate provided with a delivery opening registering with the opening of said plate and a burner tip member disposed be low said plate provided with a delivery chamber registering with said opening in said plate and with burner tip arms having burner tips thereon; screws connecting said burner tip member with the burner member above said plate whereby said burner tip member is supported; and a burner screen removably arranged in said delivery chamber of said burner tip member and adapted to be removed or inserted therein without disassembling the burner members or removing the burner tips from the burner tip member.
(3. In a gas lamp, the combination with the gas supply pipe, of a chimney comprising a flue, a deflector plate at the lower end of said flue and a skirt below said plate; a burner comprising a mixing tube member arranged above said plate, and a burner tip member arranged below said plate and communicating with said member above said plate, said burner tip member being provided with a central delivery screen chamber and having a plurality of burner tip arms grouped about said delivery chamber within said chimney skirt, said arms being provided with burner tips; and a burner screen removably arranged in said delivery chamber, said screen being common to all of the burner passage arms and being removable itrom the bottom of the chimney skirt without disassembling the burner or removing the tips of the burners.
T. In a gas lamp, a burner provided with a plurality of passage arms and a central delivery chamber open at the bottom between said arms; a closure plate for the bottom of? said chamber; and lugs on said arms adapted to engage the edges of said plate.
In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner; a chimney therefor com' prising a pair of delivery flues segmental in cross section; a deflector plate having an upwardly-projecting annular shoulder, said plate being extended beyond said shoulder to provide a chimney flange and having por tions struck up therefrom to provide flue openings, said flues being arranged within said shoulder, the struck up portions being secured to their inner sides; and a skirt portion sleeved upon aml secured to said shoulders of said plate.
9. .In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner; a. chimney therefor comprising a pair of delivery tlues segmental in cross section; and a deflector plate having an upwardly-projecting annular shoulder, said plate having portions struck up therefrom to provide flue openings, said llues being arranged within said shoulder, the struck up portions being secured to their inner sides.
10. in a gas lamp, the-combination of an inverted burner; a chimney therefor com prising delivery fines; and a deflector plate having an ltpwardly-projecting shoulder, said flues being arranged within and secured to said shoulder, portions of said plate being struck up and secured to the inner edges of said lines and coaeting with the shoulder to support the same.

In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner; a chimney therefor comprising a pair of delivery flues segmental in cross section; a deflector plate having an upwardly-projecting annular shoulder, said plate being extended beyond said shoulder to provide a chimney flange, said fines be ing arranged within said shoulder; a globe supporting ring; a hinge therefor compris ing an angled strap-like hinge member secured to one of said fines and to said flange; and a catch for said globe ring comprising an angled strap-like keeper secured to the other of said fines and to said flange constituting supporting braces therefor.
12. In a gas lamp, the combination of an inverted burner; a chimney therefor comprising a pair of delivery fines; a deflector plate arranged at the lower ends of said fines; a globe supporting ring; a hinge therefor comprising an angled strap-like hinge member secured to one of said fines and to said plate; and a catch for said globe ring comprising an angled strap-like keeper secured to the other of said lines and to said plate constituting supporting braces therefor.
13. In a gas lamp, the combination with the supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney casing; a main burner; a pilot burner; a supply pipe coupling having a lateral delivery arm with a seat in its outer end; a pilot tube mounted on said arm, said arm being provided with a passage communicating with said tube and opening in the face of said seat in the end of the arm; a valve casing arranged on the outside of said chimney casing having a nipple adapted to engage said seat in said coupling arm, said casing being provided with a passage adapted to register with the pilot passage in said arm when said valve casing is mounted thereon; a main burner valve arranged in said valve casing; and a pilot burner valve arranged in said valve casing and communicating with the said pilotdelivery passage thereof.
It. In a gas lamp, the combination with a supply pipe, of a chimney; a chimney easing into which said pipe depends; an inverted burner comprising a horizontallydisposed passage member having an upwardly-projecting supply pipe coupling thereon provided with a valve casing de livery arm projecting therefrom, said chimney being mounted on said burner and provided with an outwardly-projecting flange on which said chimney casing is mounted and with a skirt portion below said flange; a pilot burner comprising a sectional delivery tube, one section of which is secured to and supported by said coupling delivery arm, the other being arranged through the skirt of said chimney and connected to the section carried by said arm; and a valve casing mounted on said coupling and provided with main burner and pilot valves, the valve casing and coupling arm being provided with pilot burner passages com municating when the valve casing is mounted on said arm.
15. In a gas lamp, the combination with a supply pipe, of a main burner; a supply pipe coupling; a pilot burner mounted on said coupling, said coupling being provided with a passage communicating with said pilot burner; a valve casing mounted on said coupling, said valve casing being provided. with a passage adapted to register with the pilot passage in said coupling when said valve casing is mounted thereon; a main burner valve arranged in said valve casing; and a pilot burner valve arranged in said valve casing and communicating with the said pilot delivery passage thereof.
16. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a main burner; a supply pipe coupling; a pilot burner mounted on said supply pipe coupling, said supply pipe coupling being provided with a passage communicating with said burner; and a valve casing mounted on said coupling and having a passage communicating with said pilot burner passage of said coupling and provided with main and pilot valves.
17 An inverted burner comprising a delivery chamber open at its bottom and delivery passage arms opening into the side of the chamber, a cylindrical burner screen common to all of said passage arms removable through the bottom of said chamber between the said arms, a closure for said chamber provided with a flange fitting into the chamber, said screen being arranged within said flange and having its lower edge turned inwardly, a clamping disk engaging the inturned edges of said screen, a finger piece for said closure, and screws securing said closure clamping plate and finger piece.
18. An inverted burner comprising a delivery chamber open at its. bottom and delivery passage arms opening into the side of the chamber, a cylindrical burner screen common to all of said passage arms removable through the bottom of said chamber between the said arms, a closure for said chamber provided with a flange fitting into the chamber, said screen being arranged within said flange and having its lower edge turned inwardly, and a clamping disk engaging the inturned edges of said screen, said clamping disk being secured to said closure.
