INCANDESCENT GAS-LAMP.

To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, vROBERT E. EwiNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation, and partly in section, of the lamp,and Fig. 2 is a partial section taken at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the indicator or arrow connection.
My invention relates to inverted incandescent gas lamps, and is designed to' provide an improved lamp of this character in which a substantially closed shell of general inverted conical form serves to inclose and conceal the valve operating mechanism, and at the same time to protect the same from heat.
In the drawings, in which I show my invention as applied to a semi-indirect cluster inverted lamp, 2 represents the gas supply pipe leading into the valve casing 3, having an ordinary type of ratchet valve 4:, with the valve lever 5 shown as projecting downwardly and operated by flexible connections 6 extending over a pulley 7 mounted on the inverted cone 8. In the form shown, 9 is the air shutter, 10 the mixer tube, 11 the manifold and 12 the burner tips for the inverted incandescent lamps. Above the 'manifold, if a multiple burner is used, I secure a circular or annular deflector 13, (which is preferably of greater diameter than the burner cluster) of less diameter than the largest diameter of the conical shell 8. This lower delector 13 serves to start the products outwardly in an annular stream. Above this deflector 13 and surrounding the Bunsen tube, air shutter and valve, I provide an inverted conical shell 8 which is preferably of metal and enameled on its outer surface', although it may be made of other material. This inverted cone may, of course, have its outer surface curved or straight, but is preferably substantially closed to the entrance of products of combustion. It preferably has a lower hole 14 through which the pilot tube 15 extends, this tube practically filling the hole, and it may have an upper hole or Specification of Letters Patent.

The inverted cone may terminate in an ornamental upper collar portion 23 which may be pierced ornamentally and provided with an inner ring 24 of different color, or it may be'provided with an external ornamental ring 25 secured thereto.- This upper part may be pierced for a shaft 26 secured to the valve plug and having at its outer end an arrow 27 to indicate whether the gas is turned on or off.
The invention is applicable to any inverted lamp, whether single or multiple, and many variations may be made in the structure of the lamp without departing from my invention.
The advantages of my invention result from the use of the inverted cone which is substantially closed to the products of combustion and serves the two functions of concealing the valve mechanism, etc. and of keeping down the temperature of these parts. the cone is of considerable advantage in starting the outward curved path of the products of combustion which thus do not strike the cone until they reach its intermediate portion. In actual practice it is found that this construction keeps the valve casing and allied parts quite cool and effectively prevents the products of combustion from reaching the inlet, while concealing the parts. f
I claim 1. In an inverted incandescent gas lamp, a mixture tube, an inverted cone surrounding the depending mixture tube and substantially closed to the products of combustion and globe holding devices connected to said tube within the cone; substantially as described.
