7 T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that-I, HOWARD LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented a new-and useful Improvement in Cluster Incandescent Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing one form of my lnvention. Fig. 21s a similar view with the upper portion in vertical section. 'Fig. 3 1s a cross section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a. cross sectional view on the lineIVIV, Fig.2, looking downward, and Fig. 5 is a view of the sleeve member.
'My lnventionrelates to cluster incandescent gas burners, and isparticularly designed for cluster burners of the inverted type, though it maybe used with upright I burners.
In these cluster burners considerable difficulty has been experienced in'insuring'the ignition ofthe mixture of gas and air'issuing from each of the burner tips; particularly if one of the mantles ofth'e cluster is injured or absent. The ordinary pilot'light will not insure'ignition of all of the burners; and the object ofmy invention is to insure such ignition, even though a mantle is broken or destroyed. 7
To that end the invention consists in providing anigniting' flame or flames to which amixture ofgas and air is supplied, these flames being suitably positioned to ignite th'e mixture issuing from the various burner tips. In the preferred form, I provlde an igniter surrounding the mixer tube and'fed with mixture therefrom, the igniter flame or flamesbeing arranged so as to insureignition of the mixture issuing from the burner tips. In the drawings, inwhich I show my invention applied to'an'inverted incandescent cluster lamp, 2 is the gas supply pipe, 3 a
control valve, and 4 the usual hood having air inlets leading to the Bunsen tube 5. This 'vertical'Bunsen tube is preferably provided with a lining sleeve 6 which I prefer to form as shown in Fig. 2 with a bore which decreases in diameter toward its straight perspective central portion, and then increases in diameter upwardly. This, of course, may or may not be used, as desired.
At the top .of the mixer tube is a manifold 7 having a central'socket portion 8 which-fits telescopically over the upper end of the mixing tube, this socket portion preferably having-prick punch indentations to limit the telescopic engagement. From the manifold 7 extend outwardly and downwardly directed burner arms 9 to the depending ends of which are secured the burner tips 10 supporting mantles 11. 12 Lindicates the usual pilot light tube, which may or may not be used. In order to ignite the mixture issuing from the several burner tips, I provide means forming an igniter flame or flames around the mixer tube and preferably at or adjacent'tothe level of the mouths ofthe burner tips. Inthe form shown, this igniter is formed by a surrounding sleeve or skirt 13, the lower part of which is of'larger diameter than the external diameter of the mixing tube, forming an annular cavity which communicates with the mixer tube through holes 14. This sleeve may be held in place in any desired way, as by indenting 7 it and the burner tube when.the parts are inplace, as shown at 15. Thisskirt or ring will provide an annular flame fed'by the mixture and ignited by the pilot light, which I will burn continuously during the operation of the lamp. However, even this annular flame in some cases does not absolutely in- 'sure ignition of the mixture issuing from every tip, in case am'antle is injured or destroyed. To further insure such action I provide the holes or jet openings 16 below the lower edge of the sleeve and preferably mixer'tubeandbe ignited by the pilot flame.
The advantagesof my invention result from insuring the ignition of all of the jets of mixture issuing from the various burner tips, under all conditions. This is particularly important as this burner may be and often is used without surrounding glassware, and is more or less subjected to side drafts. The system is of advantage whether a pilot light is used or not, inasmuch as a match applied near the burner will cause all the burners to ignite.
This ignition system may be applied to cluster incandescent lamps of other forms and the mixer igniting flames may be formed by other structures or parts than those shown, without departing from my invention, since I consider myself the first to provide an ignition flame or flames independent of the burner tips fed from the mixture and adapted to light the mixture issuing from said burner tips.
This application 18 a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 878,697, filed December 23, 1914.
I claim: 1
1. An incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type having a plurality .of burner tips and a mixing tube arranged between said tips, said tube having an exterior mixture distributing channel, and an opening connecting its interior with said channel, substantially as described.
2. An inverted incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type having a plurality of burner tips and a mixing tube arranged between said tips, said tube having an exterior mix ture distributing channel, and an opening connecting its interior with said channel, together with a pilot light arranged to ignite the gas in said channel, substantially as described.
3. An incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type having a plurality of burner tips and a mixing tube arranged between said tips, said tube having means thereon forming a mixture distributing channel adjacent to the burner tips, and means for supplying mixture to said channel directly from the mixing tube and independently of the tips,

4. 'An incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type having a plurality of burner tips.
and a mixing tube arranged between said tips, said mixing tube having a ring or sleeve member on the upper portion thereof and said member having therein a mixture distributing channel surrounding the mixing tube and opening adjacent to the burner tips, together with-means for supplying tips, and a mixing tube arranged between said tips, there being an open bottom mixture distributing channel surrounding the mixing tube adjacent to said tips, and means for supplying mixture to said channel from the mixing tube, substantially as described.
6. An incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type, comprising an upright mixing tube carrying a plurality of depending burner tubes Whose tips are adjacent to said mixing tube, means for supplying gas and air to said tube, there being an open bottom distributing channel surrounding the mixing tube adjacent to said tips, and means'for supplying a mixture of gas and air to said channel independentlyof the burnertubes,
substantially as described.
7. A cluster'burner for incandescent gas lamps having a vertically extending mixer .tube, means for supplying a mixture of gas and air to said tube, a series of burner tips? "I around said tube, a mixturecontainer around the mixer tube arranged to furnish a flame to light the various tips, and connections arranged to supply mixture to said container independentof the burner tips, substantially as described. 8. A cluster incandescent gas lamp having a central mixer tube, a mixture container around the tube inside the burner tips and arranged to maintain an annular flame of mixture to ignite the gas from said tips, and connections arranged to feed mixture to said mixture container, substantially as described.
9. A cluster incandescent gas lamp having 1 a central mixer tube, a plurality of burner tips, a mixture distributing channel around said tube and receiving mixture directly therefrom independently of the burner tips,
said channel being so arranged as to ignitethe mixture from the various tips, substantially as described.
10. A cluster incandescent burner having a central mixer tube, and a surrounding igniter arranged to receive mixture and supported on the mixer tube and a connection arranged to feed mixture to said igniter independently of the burner tips, substantially as described.

An inverted incandescent gas lamp having a central mixing tube, a plurality of burner tips arranged in a circle about said tube, an annular igniter therefor, a pilot light therefor and a connection arranged to supply mixture to said igniter-independently of the burner tips; substantially as described.

A cluster incandescent gas lamp having a mixer tube, an igniter systemaround the tube arranged to ignite the mixture issuing from the Various burner tips, and a connection arranged to supply a mixture of gas and air to said igniter system from the mixer tube independent of the burner tips, substantially as described.

A cluster incandescent burner having a central mixer tube, a plurality of burner supports, and a surrounding igniter arranged to receive mixture and supported on the mixer tube, there being a jet opening adjacent to each burner support extending through the wall of the mixing tube and below the surrounding igniter, substantially as described.
14. An inverted incandescent gas lamp of the cluster type, having a plurality of burner tips and a mixer tube between them, jet
igniters for the burner tips, and a connec tion arranged to supply mixture to the jet igniters from the mixer tube, the tips being adjacent to the mixer tube so as to be lighted by the igniters; substantially as described.
