This invention relatesto new and useful im rovements in a burner.
ne object of the invention is to provide aburner of the character described which has been specially designed for utilizing either oil or gas as a fuel and which is of such construction that the change from one character of fuel to the other may be easlly and quickly made.

With the'above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to c ertain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illus- 25 trated in the accompanying drawings, where The figure shows a vertical sectional view of the burner. i

Referring now more particularly to the 30 drawings the numeral 1 designates the stand l which is supported by the vlegs 2 and which includes an upstanding tube 3 into which the gas supply line 4 is connected. There is a cup shaped su port 5 screwed onto the upper end of a tubular nipple 6, which forms part of said supply line and which is connected into the upper end of the T connection 7 incorporated into said line. The support encloses an air chamber 8 which is supplied with air through the inlet 9.
Within the chamber 8 there is a T connection 10 whose lower end is threaded onto the upper end of the nipple 11 and the lower end of this nipple is threaded into the bottom of the support 5, said nipple 11 also forming a continuation of the gas supply line.
A tubular anchor 12 has its lower end screwed into the upper end of the T 10 and screwed onto the upper end of this anchor 50 there is an approximately conical shaped generator 13 having the internal chamber 14 and the generator is provided with an outlet 15 at vits apex.`
There is an oil line 16 which passes through the air inlet opening 9 and is screwed into the T 10 and anchored to the upper end of the nipple 11 and extending up through the anchor 12 there is a tube 17 whose upper end extends through the opening 15, and terminates slightly above said opening, said tube being spaced from the anchor 12 as well as from the walls of the opening 15.
The upper surface of the generator is formed with a plurality of annular grooves 18 spaced apart therearound and its margin is outwardly turned forming an outwardly extending annular flange, 19.
There is a generator cap 2O whose upper side is substantially convex and whose under side is formed to conform to the external contour of the top of the generator and this cap is fitted over said generator and is held spaced therefrom by suitable depending spacing legs 21 which rest on the flange 19. The margin of the cap 20 is outwardly turned forming an annular flange 22 which extends out beyond the flange 19 of the generator. The cap is formed with a centralupstanding eye 23 provided for convenience in handling said Rounted on the support 5 there is an annular base 24 having the spaced outer and inner upstanding marginal anges 25 and 26 forming an annular channel 27 between them. Mounted on the outer flange 26, of this base, and detachable therefrom there is an annular upwardly flared combustion ring 28.
Mounted on a supporting sleeve 29, which surrounds the anchor 12 and which rests on the T 10 there is an upwardly flared balile 80, which extends up through the enlarged central opening 31, of the base 24, and is spaced' from the walls of said opening` and protects the generator 13- against drafts of cool air and delects said air to the point of combustion.
There is a fuel inlet line 32 which is turned upwardly through the sup ort 5 and extends through and terminates a ove the baille 30.
This line is provided to supply fuel to sustain l the pilot llame, and this dame is protected against extinguishment by the baffle 30.
In case gas is used it will flow in through the line 4 and be discharged into the space between the generator 13 and its cap 20 and will flow down said space and be discharged in a,circular film, or sheet, around the margin of the flange 22 Where it will be mingled with the air passing upwardly' through the opening 31 andthe mixture will be there ignited by the pilot flame.
ln case oil is used as a fuel the oil will flow in through the line 16 and pass upwardly filling the chamber 14 and overflowing into the passageway between the generator and generator cap and passing thence to the channel 27 where it may be ignited. When the generatorbecomes' hot the loil in the chamber 14 will be vaporized and will pass thence in vapor form, in an annular ilm or sheet between the generator and generator cap and will be mingled with the air, as hereinbefore stated, forming a combustible mixture. The
flange 19 is extended outwardly so as to carry the liquid fuel out beyond the opening 31 to prevent the drippings from falling-bach into the air chamber 8.
rlhe lines 4 and 16 may be equipped with conventional control valves (not shown), so that either form of fuel, or both, may beadmitted, as desired.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the principle of the invention.
What l' claim is:-
l. A burner including a cup-like support having an air chamber therein, an annular base on said support having a central air passageway, a generator above said base, a
generator cap spaced above the generator' annular flange which extends out, substan-v tially horizontally, beyond the generator flange. l
2. A burner including a support having an air chamber therein provided with an air inlet, a base mounted on said support having an air passageway therethrough, a generator disposed above said passageway vhaving an internal chamber, a generator cap above the generator and spaced therefrom to form a channel, there being a passageway leading from said generator chamber into said channel, said generator and cap each having an outwardly extended, horizontally disposed, annular flange and an upwardly iiared bafe in said air passageway and spaced from the wall thereof, said baiie surrounding the lower part of the generator.
3. A burner including a support having an air chamber therein provided with an air inlet, an annular base removably mounted ins-area on said support and having an air passageway therethrough, a generator above said base, a generator cap spaced above the generator forming a channel between them which has an annular outlet, means for delivering fuel into said channel, an upwardly flared deector disposed within and spaced from the walls of said air passageway and arranged to direct the air upwardly and outwardly across said outlet, said generator having an internal chamber and an outlet port leading from said generator chamber into said channel, and means for delivering fuel into said generator chamber.
ll. A burner including a cup-like support having an internal air chamber provided with an inlet passageway, an annular base mounted on said support and having a central passageway, said base having inner and outer upstanding marginal flanges, a generator above said base provided with an internal fuel chamber and having an annular, horizontally disposed, outwardly extended iange, a generator cap above and spaced from the generator forming a channel between' them, said cap having a horizontally disposed, marginal ange extending outwardly beyond the generator iange, means for delivering fuel directly into said channel, means for delivering fuel into said fuel chamber, said fuel chamber having an outlet port leading into said channel.
5. A burner including a cup-like support having an internal air chamber provided with an inlet passageway, an annular base mounted on said support and having acentral passageway, said base having inner and outer upstanding marginal flanges, a generator above said base provided with an internal fuel chamber and having an annular outwardly extended ange, a generator cap above and spaced from the generator forming a channel between them having an annular outlet, said cap having a marginal ange, extending outwardly beyond the generator flange, means for delivering fuel directly into said fuel chamber, said fuel chamber having an outlet port leading into said channel and an -upwardly flared delector disposed in and spaced from the walls of said central passageway and effective to deliver an upwardly and outwardly directed air current transversely of said annular outlet.
6. A fuel burner comprising a liquid fuel conducting tube, a generator on therupper end thereof with an upper overflow opening therein, a generator cap spaced slightly from said generator, means to feed liquid fuel to said tube, a pipe for gaseous fuel extending upwardly through said tube and extending through said overflow opening to a point above said generator, and means to direct al flow of air across the outer margins of said generator and said cap.

A fuel burner comprising a liquid fuel conducting tube, a generator on the upper end thereof with an upper overflow opening therein, a generator cap spaced slightly from said generator, means to feed liquid fuel to said tube, a pipe for gaseous fuel extending upwardly through said tube, the margins of said generator and cap forming a combustion space between them, means to direct a flow of air across said combustion space, and means to ignite said fuel.
8. A fuel burner comprising a liquid fuel conducting tube, a generator on the upper end thereof with an upper overflow opening therein, a generator cap spaced slightly from said generator, means to feed liquid fuel to saidtube, a pipe for gaseous fuel extending upwardly through said tube, means to direct an upward flow of air beneath said generator, a pilot light beneath said generator, said air directing means being effective to defleet the air away from said light.
9. A fuel burner comprising a generator having a fuel chamber therein, said chamber having an overflow opening at its upper end, means to feed fuel to said chamber, a generator cap shaped to fit over said generator and spaced slightly from s aid generator to form a narrow fuel channel, a flaring Wall about said generator forming a combustion chamber, means to direct air upwardly into said chamber around the lower wall of said generator, a pilot light belowsaid generator, said air directing means being effective to deflect said air away from said light.
