THERAPEUTIC DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application filed December 1,' 1911. serial No. 663,285.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrLAs T. YoUNr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of- Illinois, have invented a new andzuseful Improvement in Therapeutic Devices, of which the following is a specification. My present invention is an improvement on the therapeutic device which forms the subject of United States Letters Patent No. 938,808, granted to me November 2, 1909.. It involves, except as to afew minor details, the same construction as'that illustrated and described in my said patentto operate on the anatomical principle fully set forththerein; so that thereis no need of repeating herein the explanatory matter contained in the former patent and relating, to the manmiin which the device operates further than is required to make clear the purpose and advantage of the present improvement. In the accompanying drawing, Figure :1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing it in its operative condition and indicating by dotted representation the operation of the main feature of improvement; and Fig. 2 is a view'in elevation of the uncovered metal frame of the device in its released condition and with the operation of the aforesaid main feature shown by dotted representation.
The metal frame? is produced from a strip of steel'bent to form laterally-extending recesses L and 5 with an interposed medial compression-ridge 6 and spring- arms 7 and 8, one of which is provided. with a hook 9 on its outer extremity to engage with that of the companion-arm for releasably locking the arms together. This frameis provided with a covering 10, preferably of rubber. tubing; and loops 11 are attached to the arms for convenience in spreading them apart, when unhooked as represented in Fig. 2, preparatory to applying the device to its purpose. A stop 12, shown as an annular band which is preferably-composed of soft rubber, encircles the arms at their bases, and
is confined in depressions 13 there formed toretain the hand against tendency, which was present in the former construction, to slip upwardly. Within the frame 3 is a supplemental relatively-1i ht spring steel frame 14 conforming to tie shape or contour of and fitting the recesses 4, 5 and ridge 6, this supplemental frame being confined in place by its inherent expansion and extending with its ends closely adjacent. to the bases of the arms, or apex of the approximately triangular frame, in the normal condition of the device. Set-screws 15 work in the frame'3 at points in the. reces's forming portions thereof where they bear against the supplemental frame near its free ends to contact the recesses by turning the set-screws to force those. ends inwardly toward the dotted position represented, and by reverse turning the set-screws to permit the end-portions to expand to or toward the full-line representation thereof.
The tubing 10 covers both the main frame and the supplemental frame, as shown.
4 In the use of the device in the form shown in my said patent, it was ascertained that its size suitable when first applied became unsuitable with the'development, which it produces, of the organ, thereby rendering it necessary for the'user to provide himself with additional devices of increasing size as the development progressed. This becomes unnecessary with the use of the supplemental frame, since its adjustability adapts the device to be fitted to the part in its conditionfor the earlier. use thereon, with the supplemental frame contracted, and, by expanding the latter from time to time, to fit the device properly to the part as development thereof progresses. Moreover, the adjustable supplemental frame adapts the device to be properly fitted, for attaining the best results, in the first instance; and the ends of the supplemental frame, in its more or'less contracted condition, being covered by the rubber 10, are thereby cushioned resiliently against the organ adjacent to the dorsal vein, thus materially enhancing the comfort and efficacy of the device in use.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction thus specifically shown and described for embodying my improvement, and I do not intend by illustrating a single, specific, or preferred form to limit my invention thereto; my intention being in the following claims to claim protection for all the novelty there.
may be in the improved device as broadly as the state of the art will permit.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. A therapeutic device for the purpose set forth, comprising, in combination, a spring frame of approximately triangular formand provided with a base-ridge and' 'form and provided with a base-ridge and recesses formed by and flanking said ridge, stop-forming means at the apex of said frame, and a supplemental frame provided with a base-ridge and adjustabl confined withinand conforming to said rst-named frame. Y I v 2. A therapeutic device for the purpose set forth, comprising, in combination, a
spring frame of approximately triangular recesses formed by and flanking said ridge, stop-forming means at the apex of said frame, a supplementalspring frame provided with a base-ridge-and confined within and conforming to said first-named frame with its free-end portions terminating ad- 'jacent to said apex, and means on said firstnamed frame for contracting and expanding said supplemental frame at said end-por tions. i
3. A therapeutic device for the purpose set forth, comprising, in combination, an outer spring frame 01' approximately triangular form and provided with a base-ridge and recesses formed by and flanking said ridge, stop-forming means at the apex of said frame, a supplemental frameadjustably confined within and conforming to the inner surfaces of the recess-walls and base ridge of said outer frame, elastic material covering both frames, 'and means on the outer frame for contraetingand expanding the supplemental frame. I
4. A therapeutic device for. the purpose set" forth, comprising, in combination, a spring frame of approximately triangular form having handle-forming armswith means for releasably fastening them together! and provided with a base-ridge and recesses formed by and flanking said ridge, stopforming. means at the apex of said frame, a
supplemental spring frame confined within
