To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL l/VUnsr, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of Diibendorf, near Ziirich, in the Canton of Ziirich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in T-Squares with Guide-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a T-square the head of which is provided with rollers adapted to engage a guide bar secured to the drawing board, and to provide an improved method of mounting such rollers.
A further object is to provide means for supporting the weight of the T-square when the board is in an inclined or vertical position, and to provide an improved method of connecting the shank of the T-square to the head.
l Vith the above objects in view, my inven tion consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a drawing board fitted with my improved T-square; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. at is a plan view of a portion of the T-square illustrating my improved method for connecting the head and shank; and, Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the head of the T-square showing still another method of mounting the rollers.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a represents the drawing board, to one end of which is rigidly secured a guide bar g, by means of straps b. The T-square comprises a head S to which is attached the usual shank S. In the head of the T-square are mounted four rollers 1", r 1* and r adapted to engage on opposite edges of the guide bar. A cord 0 is attached to the head of the T-square, and, passing over a pulley (Z mounted at the end of the guide bar g, is secured at its other end to a counter weight p, which preferably slides on a guide rod 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A similar arrangement of counter weight may be attached to the other end of the shank of the T-square as indicated in Fig. 1. It is obvious that when the board a is in an inclined or vertical position, the counter weight 10 serves to balance the T-square so that it will remain in any posit-ion to which it is moved.

In Fig. 5 is shown still another method of mounting the rollers. In this case the rollers on one side of the bar are mounted in brackets e, 6 which are themselves pivoted at 70 and 70 to the head of the T-square. A screw f provided with right and left handed threads engages the bracket-s adjacent their outer ends, and it is obvious that by turning this screw by means of the knurled nut the brackets may be swung on their pivots, and the rollers brought to bear more or less tightly against the guide bar.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the shank S of the T-square secured to the head by means of two oppositely disposed pointed pins or screws 17., n so arranged that the shank may be lifted from the board in order to pass over any obstacles thereon. It will be noted that this pivotal connection permits of the movement of the shank relative to the head in a plane at right angles to the board.
It will be evident that the counter weight construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 can be used in connection with the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 for mounting the rollers, and also that the pivotal connection of the shank and head as shown in Fig. 4 can be used with any construction of rollers, and with the counter weight arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a drawing board, a guide bar rigidly secured thereto adjacent one edge thereof, a T-square having a head adapted to engage said bar, a rod spaced apart from said bar and extending substantially parallel therewith, a pulley mounted at one end of said bar, a cord passing over said pulley and attached at one end to the head of the T-square, and a counter-weight attached to the other end of said cord and sliclably mounted on said rod, said counterweight serving to balance the weight of the T-square when the board is in an inclined or vertical position.
2. In combination with a drawing board, a T-square adapted to slide thereover, such T-square comprising a head and shank, a bracket carried by said head and said shank being pivoted to said bracket so as to swing in a plane at right angles to said board.
3. In combination with a drawing board, a T-square comprising head and shank, a guide bar secured to said board, and rollers mounted on said head and adapted to engage said guide bar whereby said head is movable therealong, said shank being pivoted to said head so as to be capable of swinging in a plane at right angles to said board and bar.
4:. In combination with a drawing board, a guide bar rigidly secured thereto adjacent one edge thereof, a T-square comprising a head and shank, a pair of rollers carried by said head and adapted to engage one edge of said guide bar, a pair of brackets pivoted to said head, a second pair of rollers carried by said brackets, and means for adjusting said brackets on their pivots so as to cause the rollers carried thereby to engage the other edge of said guide bar.
