Be it known that l, JOSEPH L. HoFnR, a i citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgewater, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rloys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mechanical toys, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device which will instruct and amuse, and wherein the movements of a double-acting trip hammer are illustrated.

VVit-h these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved toy; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section.

Corresponding` and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved toy comprises upper and lower members 10-11 slidably engaging face to face or in superimposed relations. The members 10-11 may be of any required size, and the member 10 is extended at one end to form a hand-grip portion 12. The lower member 11 is preferably wider than the upper member 10, as shown, to enable the device to be grasped more readily, and is provided near its ends with slots 13-14 through which pins 15-16 extend. Rising from the lower member 10 preferably midway of its ends, is a standard 17 reduced at with an intermediate slot 19 through which the standard 17 extends, and with the reduced portion of the standard operating in the slot. It will be noted that the shoulders 18 project over the upper face of the member 11 alongside the slot 19, and thus holds the member 11 slidably coupled to the member 10. Near its ends the member 11 is provided with slots 20-21 Pivoted upon the pin 15 within the slot 13, and extending through the slot 20, is an arm 22 having a hammer 23 at its outer end, while a similar arm 241- is pivoted upon the pin 16 and extends through the slot 21 and is provided with a hammer 25 at its outer end. The arms 22-24 are so proportioned as to length that when moved into their inward position the hammers 23-25 will strike the upper end of the standard 17, the latter being inclined so that the face of the hammers will strike fairly upon the standard. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the member 11 is moved into one position, the inner end of the slot 20 will engage the arm 22, and throw the latter with its hammer 23 into outward posit-ion as shown at the left in Fig. 1, and at the same time the outer end of the slot 21 will engage against the arm 24 and throw the latter inwardly with its hammer 25 in engagement with the standard 17. Then when the member 11 is moved into the opposite direction the arms and their hammers will be reversed in position, as will be obvious. By this simple means an imitation of the action of a double-acting trip hammer is produced by merely moving the member 11 back and forth, within the range of the slot 19.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and will produce amusement and instruction.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is:

1. A mechanical toy comprising an upper and a lower member slidably engaging face to face and provided with registering slots near the ends, said upper member being further supplied with an intermediate slot, a standard connected to said lower member and extending through the intermediate slot, and holding the upper and lower members 'slidably in superimposed relations, and arms pivoted in the terminal slots of the lower member and extending through the terminal slots of the upper member and provided respectively with hammers at their outer ends, whereby when the upper member is moved longitudinally of the lower member, the arms will be caused to swing alternately upon their pivots and cause t-he hammers to alternately engage upon the standard.

2. A mechanical toy comprising an upper and a lower member slidably engaging face to face, said upper member being provided with slots near the ends and with an intermediate slot, a standard connected to said lower member and extending through the intermediate slot, and arms pivoted to the lower member and extending through the terminal Slots of the upper member and provided respectively with hammers at their outer ende, whereby when the upper member is moved longitudinally of the lower mem ber, the arms will be caused to Swing alternately upon their pivots and cause the hammers to alternately engage upon the stand ard.

3. A mechanical toy comprising an upper and a lower member slidably disposed in superimposed relations, said upper member having slots spaced apart, a standard eX- tending' from said lower member, means for maintaining said upper and lower member slidably in superimposed relations, and arms having hammere at one end and extending through said slots and pivoted in the lower member.
