CONVERTIBLE HOOD, CAPE, AND VEIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 22, 1912. Serial No. 672,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION JoHNsronE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Hood, Cape, and Veil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to womens wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved convertible hood, cape and veil arranged to form an attractive and comfortable article of head wear for the protection of the head, neck and chest in cold weather, or to form a cape, or anaccessory, or a trimming, or a veil over the head or hat of the wearer, or as a sunbonnet for summer use.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a body portion having a tail, a turned down collar on the front margin of the body portion, plaits extending lengthwise of the body portion along the middle portion thereof, front bands or tabs integral with the sides of the body portion at the forward end thereof, the said front bands extending out- Wardly and forwardly, and back bands or tabs integral with the sides of the body portion at the'lower end thereof, the said back bands extending outwardly and rearwardly.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference in-- dicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the convertible hood, cape and veil as applied, and arranged as a hood; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same partly opened; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the convertible hood, cape and veil as applied, and arranged as a cape; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the convertible hood, cape and veil.
The body portion A of the wearing apparel is provided along the front margin with a turned down collar 13 and the said body port-ion is provided at the rear with an integral tail C, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. Plaits I) extend lengthwise of the body portion A atthe middle thereof from the collar B to the tail 0 so as to give the desired fullness to the body portion and at the same time render the body portion ornamental. From the sides of the body portion A at the front thereof extend integrally front bands or tabs E and E diverging in an outward and forward direction, as plainly shown in Fig. 4, and back bands F, F extend integrally from the sides of the body portion A at the rear end thereof, the said back bands F and F diverging outwardly and rearwardly, that is, in an opposite direction to the front bands E and E. Suitable fastening devices G and G, such as buttons and buttonholes or safety buttons having heads and sockets for receiving the heads and arranged on the body portion A along the front margin thereof at the junction of the body portion with the front bands or tabs E and E.
The front edge of the body portion A is curved so as to fit snugly around the neck of the wearer when using the apparel as a. cape (see Fig. .3).
When using the article as a hood, as shown in Fig. 1, then the body portion A is placed on the head of the wearer, and the fastening devices G, G are connected with each other under the chin of the wearer so that the front bands E and E hang downward, after which the back bands F, F are passed around the neck of the wearer and over the upper ends of the bands E, E, with the upper bands tied after being looped around the neck so that the terminals of the bands hang downward over the shoulders, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. When the article is used as a hood the tail G extends down past the back of the neck, and when the bands F, F are passed around the neck they extend over the tail O and thus tie the same firmly in position with a view to thoroughly protect the neck.
In order to heighten the effect of the article the edges thereof may be provided with suitable lace or other trimming H.
The body A and its integral bands E, E, F, F as well as the collar B may be made of various materials according to the intended use of the article, it being understood that the article may be used for various purposes and in various positions on the head, neck and shoulders of the wearer, the two principal uses as a hood and cape being illustrated only in Figs. 1 and 3.

be used as a veil over the head or hat of the passed around the neck or tied at the back of the head or under the chin. It also may be used as a sunbonnet in the summer when made of a correspondingly light material such as linen, cotton and other wash fabrics.
It is understood that for winter wear the article is made of heavier material, such as skins, velvet, silk and the like.
The body portion A and the bands E, E, F, F, may be provided on the under side With a lining of silk or other material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A convertible hood, cape and veil, comprising a body portion having a tail, diverging front bands extending integrally from tending integrally from the sides of the body portion at the rear end thereof, the
said upper bands diverging in an opposite direction relative to the said back bands.
2. A convertible hood, cape and veil, co1n prising a body portion having a tail, a turned down collar on the front margin of the body portion, plaits extending lengthwise of the body portion along the middle thereof, front bands integral with the sides of the body portion at the forward end thereof, the said front bands extending outwardly and forwardly, and back bands integralwith the sides of the body portion at the lower end thereof, the said back bands extending outwardly and rearwardly.
