` WATTS, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 104,210, dated .Tune 14, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making peut of the same.
To all whmfit 'may concern.-
Bc it known that I, E. B. Sonsrrnneoon, of St. Johns, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do declare that t-he following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the ait to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This improvement relates to an improvement in that class of farm-gates which are so hung as to swing like an ordinary gate, for the passage of vehicles or cattle, and to turn upon trunnions in the posts without swinging, and to be lowered or raised .at pleasure," so as to allow small animals to pass beneath it; and
It consists in the arrangement of the suspensionbars which support the' gate from the weighted swinging bar to the central rail of the gate, and carrying the clasp adjusted to it overY the upper lrail or board of the gate, whereby the latter can be turned up as occasion may require, and, by the arrangement of a. roller, working on a rounded post, by means of which the gate may be lowered or raised at pleasure, so that snowedrifts or heavy falls of' snow will not affect its Working.
The Drawings.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a gate, constructed and operating according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of fig. 1 through the linef'xx, showing the gate turned on its pivots.
E E are suspension bars,.attached to one of the 4 rails F of the gate, at their lower ends, by hooks and eyes or hinge-joints, as seen at g, and to the beam D by an eye, bolted through the beam D with hooks or `hinge-joints, as seen at h.
u u represent the recesses cut into the fasteningpost, and connecting with the perpendicular groove V, and into which one of the pivots i works perpendicular] 'yhat portion ot' said gate not specified above is the same upon which Letters Patent No. 87,206 were granted to me February 23, 1869.
I claim as nexy and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The suspension-bar E nearest to post B, with the attachments of the bars E E to the beam D, consist ing of eyes and bolt through said beam D.
Also, the roller T and band s, with its connections, to segment of a circle, J, and the rounded V:surface of the post B.
