BOX FOR WARM-AIR REGISTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Qct. 15, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN J. BURGESS and SAMUEL P. BURGESS, citizens of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for W'arm-Air Registers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes for warm air registers and the object is to provide an improved form of knock-down box for use in connection with a wall register.
A further object is to provide a box having a back and sides of double thickness, with interlocking joints.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, with the register removed, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a portion of the back showing the relation of the inner plate or lining and the plate forming part of the outer casing, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side members, a portion being broken away in order to Show the joint at the bottom, Fig. 6 is a vertical section of one of the side members, Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 6, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the front piece shown in Fig. 1, at the bottom of the box, Fig. 9 is a perspective view showing registers connected. with opposite sides, or rather with the front and back of the box, Fig. 10 shows the upper plate of the box, detached.
In carrying out our invention, we provide a back portion consisting of an outer plate 5 and a lining 6, this back portion having connected thereto side members having outer plates and lining members 7 and 8, respectively. The top is shown in Fig. 10, and may consist of a single plate formed as describedbelow, and the sides are connected at their lower ends by means of a front piece 9 having connecting members at the ends and stiffening members on its upper and lower edges. The outer plate of the back, indicated by 5, has a single fold 10 along its upper edge and a double reverse fold 11 at its lower edge, the said fold last mentioned being engaged by the single fold 12 of the lining 6. Members 5 and 6 of the back are connected by a bolt 13 secured by a nut 14.
Referring to Fig. 5, it will be observed that each of the members 7 and 8 is formed with a top port-ion somewhat narrower than the base, and the outer plate 7 is provided with a three sided fold 15 along its front edge, receiving flange 16 of the lining 8. The other long edge of lining 8 has a flange 16 extending in the same direction, or toward the outside of the box, these flanges serving to space the lining from the outer plate 7, forming a dead air space between the two. Within the fold 15 is secured a plate 17 having a threaded aperture 18 for the reception of a screw for retaining the register in position. Plate 7 has an inwardly turned single fold 19 at the top, and an outwardly turned fold 20 along its rear edge, while the lower edge of the plate is provided on its inner side, at the bottom, with a double reverse fold 22, which is engaged by a fold 22 on the lower edge of the lining 8, forming a slip joint 22 for receiving the adjacent section of pipe. The front piece 9 has cars 23 at each end, which pass between plates 7 and folds 22 thereof the angle 24L being beneath portion 25 of member 7. A single fold 25 and a double reverse fold 26 are formed on the upper and lower edges respectively of the member 9. The lining member 8 has an ear 27 at one of the upper corners, this car being disposed in front of lining 6 of the back.
The cover portion is shown in Fig. 10, and consists of a single piece 28 having flanges 29, 30 and 31, and a single flat fold 32 along its front edge. Flanges 29, 30 and 31 are disposed between the outer plates and the lining of the back and side walls, and apertures 33, 3 1 and 35 permit of the insertion of suitable securing devices.
In Fig. 9 a box 40 is shown, intended to carry two registers 11 and 12, for use when the box is located in a wall between two rooms to be heated from one pipe. The box 10 does not differ from the box previously described, except that the rear plate and the lining therefor are removed.
The double reverse folds 11 and 22 on the lower edge of the back and sides are cut cure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a.
back having a double reverse fold on its lower edge, a lining for the back havin a single fold engaging the double reverse fdld, the fold last mentioned being adapted to receive the end of an adjacent pipe section, a plurality of side members having a double reverse fold at their lower edges and a three sided fold'at their front edges, a lining for each of the side members, such lining last mentioned having flanges along its longer edges arranged to space the lining from the side members, the lining having a lower fold engaging the double reverse fold of the side members, a top having flanges disposed between the back and side members and the lining of the same, and a front piece connecting the lower portions of the side members, said front piece being stiffened longitudinally and arranged to engage the pipe section. V V l 2. In a device of the class described, a back having a double reverse fold on its lower edge, a lining for the back having a single fold engaging the double reverse fold, the fold last mentioned being adapted to receive the end of an adjacent pipe'sect-io'n, a- 40 plurality of side members each having a double reverse fold at its lower edge and a three sided fold at its front edge, an adjustable engaging device located in the three sided fold, means for securing a register to such engaging device, a lining for each of the side members, said lining last mentioned having flanges along its lower edges arranged to space the lining from the side, members, the lining having a lower fold engaging the double reverse fold of theside members, a top having flanges disposed between the back and side members and'the lining of the same, and a front piece connecting the lower portions of the side members, and means thereon for engaging the i aforesaid pipe section.
