Be it known that I, Gnoviin "V'EAVIGR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochelle, in Grant parish and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a device for removing boxes from shelves or replacing the same thereon, .my device being particularly adapted for boxes which are out of the normal reach of a person.

For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a grooved gripping rod for insertion beneath the lid of a box, a retaining rod provided with a track slidable in the groove of the gripping rod and a plate secured to the retaining rod and adapted to engage the under side of the box, the said gripping rod and said retaining rod being retained in slidable engagement with bands mounted to encircle the said rods and secured to one of the rods.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing the same in operative position and engaging a box shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my dc vice. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a gripping rod 10 having the upper end 11 thereof tapered to a point, the said gripping rods being provided with a flat side 12 rovided with a groove 13 extending longituc inally theret-hrough. A retaining rod 1% is mounted to slidably engage the gripping rod 10 and is provided with a flat side 15 having a track 16 projecting outwardly therefrom and extending longitudinally thereto, the said track being slidable in the groove 13 of the gripping rod 10. Secured to the upper end of the retaining rod-1 1 and extending laterally thereto is a plate 17 and secured to the lower ends of the gripping rod 10 and retaining rod 14 are handles 18 and 19 respectively, the said handles being provided to permit of more conveniently operating the rods. A band 20 is secured to the gripping rod 10 and encircles the retaining rod 14; and a second band 21 is secured to the retaining rod 14L and encircles the gripping rod 10, the said bands 20 and 21 being adapted to retain the gripping rod 10 and retaining rod 14.- in slidablc engagement.

In the use of my device, when it is desired to lift a box provided with a lid, from a shelf which is beyond the normal reach of a person, the device is grasped by the bandles 18 and 19 and by pressing upwardly on the handle 18 the gri niing rod 10 will he slid upwardly so that the tapered end 11 thereof will pass beneath the covered edge and then by pushing upwardly on the ban dle 19, the plate 17 will be engaged with the base of the box thus rigidly retaining the box in engagement with my device so that the same can be easily and conveniently lifted from the shelf and deposited within reach of the person, desiring to use the box. By employing the bands 20 and 21 the gripping .rod 10 and the retaining rod 14 will be retained in relative sliding engagement and the upper end of the groove 13 is spaced from the upper end of the gripping rod 10 thus limiting the upward movement of the retaining rod so that the retaining rod can in no manner be disengaged from the gripping rod. it

Having thus fully described the invcntion, what l claim as new, is

1. A box lifter comprising a gripping rod having a tapered upper end and provided with a Hat side having a longitudinally extending groove therein, a retaining rod providcd with a flat side adapted to engage the flat side of the gripping rod, a track extended from the flat: side of the retaining rod and operable in the groove of the gripping rod and a plate secured to the upper end of the retaining rod, the tapered end of the said gripping rod being adapted for insertion beneath the edge of a box cover and the said plate being ad aptcd -for engagement with the base of a box.
