March 23 1926.
-c. E. HARRIS TOOL Filed July V19 1924 mvsmon Mmm ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Mar. 23, 1926.
UNITED STATES CHARLES E. HARRIS, 0F BRAZIL, INDIANA.
TOOL.
Application tiled .Tuly 19, 1924. Serial No. 727,017.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HARRIS, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Brazil, in the county ot Clay and Stat-e ot Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools especially adapted tor handling railroad ties and other heavy timber, an object being to provide a tool by means oi which a tie may be readily removed from or placed in position beneath the rails ot a track. l
Another object ot the invention is the provision of a tool designed to tacilitate handling ties piled one upon the other, means beingprovided for sepa-rating a tie from the pile so that the said tie may be securely engaged by the tool tor its convenient removal.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details ot construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing a tragmentary portion of a railroad track and illustrating the use `ot the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the tool per se, parts being broken away.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line '3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters ot reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character R indicates the rails ot a track which are supported upon ties T in the usual manner.
The tool which is designed to facilitate handling the ties for their convenient removal and replacement, comprises a body 10 which is provided with an opening 11 extending transversely through the body. Extending trom one end ot the body is a handle 12 at the outer end ot which is a hand grip 13.
Extending laterally trom opposite ysides ot the body 10 are substantially L-shaped gripping arms 14. The inner ends ot these arms extend into and are slidable through the opening 11 and their opposed taces are provided with rack teeth 15. The teeth 15 are engaged by a gear 16 which is mounted for rotation within the opening 11,k the said gear being rigid with the inner end of a crank arm 17. The innerend of this arm 17 is mounted in bearings provided in the body 10 and forms a shattupon which the gear 16 is secured. The outer end ot this arm is disposed in juxtaposition to the grip 13 so that the operator may use one hand for holding the tool and the other hand for manipulatingrthe crank arm 17.
The outer ends of the arms 14 are provided with inwardly disposed engaging members or teeth 1S so that when the arms 14 are moved relatively inward the teeth 18 will bite into the opposite sidesot a. tie T or other timber and hold the tool in cla-mpl ber from the remainder of the pile sutliciently to permit the gripping arms to be engaged.
It will be appare-nt trom the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides an exceedingly simple, eiiiclent and easily manipulated tool by means of which heavy timbers such as railroad ties and the like may be easily handled.
The invention is susceptible ot various changes in its form, proportions and minor details ot construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly :tall within the scope ot the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A tool comprising an elongated body having an opening extending transversely therethrough, a handle extending trom one end of and rigid with the body, a gear mounted for rotation within the opening, oppositely disposed toothedbars engaging the gear and extending from theopening, gripping means at the outer ends of the bars and a handle rigid with and extending trom the gear in the direction of the body handle.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CHARLES E. HARRIS.
