TIE-SPACER.

Application filed August 8, 1917, Serial No. 185,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BAL- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Bradford, county of Miami, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Spacers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tie spacers and has for its object the production of a device of this character adapted for ready and expeditious application to a rail for service as a stop or fulcrum for a bar or other implement used in effecting spacing of a tie. A further object is the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and which will be applicable to either rail of the track. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tie spacer embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section through the device, showing the same applied to the base of a rail.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a flat elongated rectangular body 5 of metal, of a length greater than the width of the base 6 of a conventional rail 7 ,-said body, in the use of the device, being adapted for arrangement under the base of the rail with one end registering therewith and with the other end projecting laterally therefrom, as seen in Fig. 3.
Secured by suitable securing devices 8 to the upper side of the body 5 is an overhanging jaw 9 which is adapted to engage over one edge of the rail base to which'the device is applied. One edge of the body 5 is bent up to form a stop 10 spaced from and parallel with the jaw 9, said stop 10 being adapted for registration with the other edge of the rail base as clearly seen in Fig.5. A handle 11 is provided at the upper side of the device, one end of said handle .being connected with the jaw 9, the other end thereof being connected with the outer end Specification of Letters Patent.

of the body 5. Said handle thus serves as a reinforcement for the jaw adapting the same to better withstand the tremendous pressure or strain to which the same is subjected when the device is in use. The body 5 is formed at its under side with a longitudinally extending reinforcing rib 12, the ends of said rib'being rounded or beveled so as to not afford any obstruction to application or removal of the device in the employment of the same.
In use, the device is inserted under the base of the rail adjacent to the tie which it is desired to move or shift. In this application of the device to the rail the jaw 9 is first engaged with one edge of the rail base, whereupon the outer end of the device is swung downwardly to efiect engagement of the stop 10 with the opposite edge of the rail base. The arrangement is such as will be seen, that the Weight of the outer end of the device will serve to retain the inner end thereof or the stop 10 in operative relation with the rail base, thus serving to automatically lock the device to the rail after once the same has been applied. After the application of the device as described, the crow bar or other implement used is inserted between one edge of the body 5 and the tie to be moved, the latter being moved by the implement which fulcrums against the device, as will be readily understood. The arrangement is such as will be seen, that either side of the device may be engaged with the spacing-implement, and the device may be applied to either rail of the track or to either side of either rail.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect; this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described com prising a body adapted for arrangement at the under side of the base of a rail; an overhanging jaw at the upper side of said body adapted to engage over one edge of the base of a rail; a stop on the upper side of said body spaced from said jaw and adapted to register with the opposite edge of the rail base, said body being extended horizontally from said overhanging jaw; and a handle at the upper side of said body connected at one end with said jaw and at its other end with said body, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body adapted for arrangement at the under side of the base of a rail; an overhanging jaw at the upper side of said body adapted to engage over one edge of the base of a rail; a stop on the upper side of said body, spaced from said jaw and adapted to register with the opposite'edge of the rail base, said body being extended horizontally from said overhanging j aw; and a handle arranged over said horizontally extended portion of said body and connected with one end of said jaw, at its other end with the outer end of said body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
