RAILWAY-TRACK GAUGE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARD Gr. Tnavrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Track Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway track guages, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved gauge partly in section and applied to a pair of rails, the rails being in transverse section.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device applied to a pair of rails.
The improved device comprises a stock member 10 having an intermediate lifting handle 11, and with spaced hooks at one end to engage over the head of one of the rails, a portion of which is shown at 13.
A stop 14 depends from the stock 10 near its other end and is adapted to be engaged by inner face of the opposite rail, a portion of which is represented at 15, when the implement is actuated.
Pivoted at 16 to the end of the stock in advance of the. stop 14, is a lever member 17, preferably formed with a socket to receive an operating handle 18.
The member 17 is formed with a hooked extension 25 to engage beneath the head of the rail 15 from its exterior, as shown.
Slidable upon the stock 10 adjacent the hooked terminal 12 is a sleeve 20 having a depending stop 21 to bear against the inner face of the head of the rail 18. The sleeve 20 is provided with a set screw 22 to adjustably couple the sleeve and its stop to the stock.
This simply constructed implement enables the rails to be properly and accurately lined and is operated as follows:

One of the rails, for instance the rail 13, is spiked fast to the ties, a portion of one of the ties being indicated at 23 and the spikes at 24.
The other rail 15 is disposed upon the tie as near as possible to its true position, and the hooks 12 of the stock 10 disposed over the outer face of the head of the rail 13 and the sleeve 21 moved up against the inner face of the head of the same rail 13 and the set screw 22 set to lock the sleeve in position. The lever 17 is then operated to cause its nose 25 to bear against the web of the rail 15 and force the head against the stop 14, and thus accurately and expeditiously gauge the rails.
The improved device may be constructed of any suitable material, and of any desired dimensions.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in-the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is A railway track gauge, comprising a stock member terminating at one end in a hook adapted to engage the tread or ball of a track rail, a stop formed on said stock at a point slightly removed from the other end thereof against which is adapted to abut the tread or ball of another track rail, a sleeve slidably fitted on the stock and having a stop for cooperation with the hook, means carried by the sleeve for locking the same in an adjusted position upon the stock, a lever pivotally connected to the stock at the free end remote from the hook, and
a nose formed on the lever and being curved downwardly and inwardly to engage the web of a track rail below the tread or ball thereof, whereby on the outward swinging of the lever the ball or'tread of said rail will be forced against the stop integral with the stock.
