PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BRYAR, OF ST. JOHN, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF THREEFOURTHS TO .ROBERT L. JOHNSTON, JOHN WALSH, JOHN M. SMITH, AND MATHEW ALOYSIUS HARDING, OF ST. JOHN, CANADA.
SPIKE-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,823, dated November 10, 1903. Application filed March 20, 1903. Serial No. 148,749. (No model.)
Tov aZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRYAR, a subf` ject of the I( ing of England, residing at St. John, in the county of St. lJ ohn, New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Fullers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which lo it appertains to nia-ke anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw-A ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and usefuliniproveniente in spike-pulling tools; and it consists in the provision of means whereby a double claw is produced, one arm of which is adapted to engage over and be fulcrumed upon zo the rail of arailway, while the other claw is designed to engage the head of a spike and raise the same from a tie. r
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction, which will be herein- 2 5 after fully described and then speciiically denedin the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views, in
Figure l is a sectional view through a rail,l showing in elevation my spike-puller as ap-` plied to the head of a spike holding the flan ge of a rail. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the 5 5 spike partially raised and the spike-puller thrown down into a substantially horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing one end of the tool fulcrumed over the top of a rail, and Fig. 4 is a plan. view of the tool.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a raill way-rail of ordinary construction, which in the drawings is shown as held to the tie by means of a spike B.
Yd, and opposite the convexed portion is atapering fulcrurned lug d',which is adapted to serve as a fulcrnm when the two are used in a manner illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Projecting at right angles from the handle a suitable distance from the claw N is an arm E, which is bent at a point' E at substantially right angles, forming a claw F, which when the tool is employed in the manner shown in- Fig. 3 of the drawings is designed to engage the head of the spike to be abstracted when theulcrunied lug is fulcrnmed "upon the tread of a rail.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of my improved tool the same maybe used in two different ways, as illustrated in Figs. l to 3, inclusive. In the construction illustrated in Figs. l and 2 but one claw is used, the handle being fulcrumed upon the convened portion thereof, while in the form shown in Fig. 3 the spur adjacent to one end of the handle is adapted to be fulcruined on the rail and the claw engaging the head of a spike, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A'spike-extractor comprising a shank portion with a claw at'one end, a fulcrum-lug at GEORGE BRYAR.
litnesses:
JOHN A. SINCLAIR, K. J. MAGRAE.
