To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mourns Scmmonn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp extinguishers, and more particularly to that type of lamp having a burner provided with a flat wick and has for its object to provide within the burner means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for snufling or extinguishing the flame of a wick when the lamp is accidentally tilted or upset thereby overcoming the liability of conflagrations or explosions.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a lamp extinguishing means carried within the lamp burner and which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eiticient and quick in its action, readily positioned within the burner and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel oonstruction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawlngs wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lamp burner showing the adaptation thereto of a flame extinguishing means in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view illustrating the extinguishing means in an inoperative position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the extinguishing shutters.
Referring to the drawings in detail 4 denotes a burner body having mounted thereon a dome-shaped casing 5 formed with a transverse slot 6 for the passage of the flame. The lower end of the casing 5 is seated upon the burner body 4: and is provided with a lateral annular extension 7 terminating in a vertically disposed annular flange 8, the latter together with the extension 7 and the lower end of the casing provides the pocket for the lower end of the lamp shade. The shade is fixedly secured in position through the medium of the upwardly disposed retaining tongues S) which project from the vertical flange 8. The burner body is secured in any suitable manner to the neck of the oil receptacle 10 of the lamp.
Projecting upwardly through the burner body t and arranged within the casing 5 as well as being in alinement with the slot 6 is a wick tube 11 provided with a wick 12. The tube 11 terminates a sufiicien-t distance from the top of the inner face of the casing 5 so that a clearance will be provided to allow of the operation of the extinguishing shutters 13 and 14.
The extinguishing shutters are oppositely disposed with respect to each other, and when one is moved to extinguish the flame it is shifted in a direction toward the other. Each of the extinguishing shutters includes a body portion 15 having a flat arm 1.6 at each end, which are disposed at right angles with respect to the body portion 15. The arms 16 are connected together at the top by a flat member 17 and by such an arrangement the upper portion of the shutter forms a pocket so that the said upper portion can be extended over the top of the wick tube to snuff or extinguish the flame. The arms 16 of each shutter depend from the body portion 15 and have their lower ends aperturcd, as at 18 for the passage of pivots 19, the latter being connected to the sides of the wick tube 11. The shutter 13 is of less length than the shutter 14 so that the arms 16 of the shutter 1% will overlap the arms 16 of the shutter 13 when the arms of the shutters are mounted upon the pivots 19 which is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
Means is arranged within the casing 5 for shifting the shutter 13 to snuff or extinguish the flame when the lamp is tilted in one direction and for shifting the shutter 14 to snuff or extinguish the flame when the lamp is tilted in the opposite direction, normally the shutters are in an open position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, when the lamp is in an upright position due to the fact that the upper ends of the shutters are heavier than the lower ends. The means for shifting the shutters 13 and 14 consists of globular members 23 and 24 which are loosely suspended from their respective hangers 20 and 25, the latter being fixed to and depending within the casing 7. The lower ends of said hangers are provided with slots 21 and 26 respectively adapted for the reception of curved hooks 22 and 27 upon the upper ends of suspension members 28, the latter having their lower ends fixed to the said globular members 23 and 24:. The hooks 22 and 27 are thereby loosely connected to the lower ends of the hangers 20 and 25 respectively, so that if the lamp tilts in a direction toward either of the shutters 13 or 14, the globular member which is positioned in proximity thereto, will swing upon its hanger 20 or 25 and force its contiguous shutter over the wick tube 11 and thereby extinguish the flame.
The globular members 23 and 24 are freely suspended from the hangers so that when the lamp is tilted either one of said globular members will act to shift the shutter to snufl or extinguish the flame.
What I claim is 1. An extinguisher for lamps comprising the combination with a lamp burner including a casing, a wick tube, and a pair of oppositely movable shutters pivotally connected to the wick tube and capable of being shifted over the tube to extinguish the flame,
of a pair of hangers connected to and depending in said casing, a globular member arranged in proximity to each of said shutters, and suspension members attached to said globular members and loosely connected to said hangers whereby when the lamp is tilted one of said members will move to shift a shutter to extinguish the flame.
2. An extinguisher for lamps comprising the combination with a lamp burner including a casing, a wick tube, and a pair of oppositely movable shutters pivotally connected to the wick tube and capable of being shiftedover the tube to extinguish the flame, of a pair of hangers connected to and depending in said casing, a globular member arranged in proximity to each of said shutters, and suspension members attached at their lower ends to said globular members and having hook-shaped upper ends movably connected to the lower ends of said hangers whereby when the lamp is tilted one of said globular members will shift a shutter to extinguish the flame.
