- IMPLEMENT-HANDLE.
Application fiied'May $2, 1912. Serial No. 699,006.-
lb all whom it may concern: 7
, Be it known that I, WILEY J. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berea, in the county of Cuyahoga. and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Implement-Handles, of
which the following is a specification, the- 16, 1910. It being feasible to attach handles; of the herein considered character at only two points, often s'olne'distance apart; the powers of resistance to torsional stra ns attendantalpon its use in turning or otherwise controlling the implement proper, proves the dominating factor of commercial value. With this in mind the stimulus associated with this inventive conception is attested by the following objects: First, the provision of a handle adapted to the inferred purpose, which will prove more efficacious in the fulfilment thereof. Second, a-measurable saving in the stock required for its manufacture. Third, a reduction in the manufacturin expense by reason of its simplification an as a corollary a pronouncedly added faof assemblage.
e said invention consists of means which areherein after described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my. invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one ofreference characters consistently designate like parts: By way of illustratin one conjunctive application of my invention, it will be men in Fig. I attached to a lawn roller A.-
This roller embraces in its construction the axle a, drum a and counterweighted attaching members proper a. These ilatter I members are disposed as usual upon opposite ends of the axle and as indicated recessed with respect to the lateral annular edges of the drum.
The handle construction comprises a primary bail-shaped supporting member '3 the.
ends 6 of which are secured-each to an no per end of-one of the counterweighted members a The supporting member B is by preference formed of flat stock.
Mounted upon the supporting member, B is a forked or bifurcated extension' mem-ber C. As implied this member has two arms each designated entir as c and these are moreover substantially symmetrical relative "to the med1an line of the implement. The
big-ht o of the extension member C isf'ona considerable distance of comparatively constricted U' shape and to its fiatinterjacent section 0 a common type of hand grip 0*- is fastened through: the medium of the bolt Fig. I. The two lower half sections of the arms 0' are rather'abruptly bent to diverge outwardly so that as a whole the arms are inwardly curved intermediately of their ends. tangentially overlie the upper surface of the supporting member B. To best serve the purposes intended the extension member 0.
is likewise of fiat stock and of similar diniension throughout. arms 0 to the members B at the points indicated. Two mainly straight and also fiat and otherwise correspondingly sized braceand nut combinations a clearly outlined in l The lowermost extremities c then Rivets a afiix the members D extend between like intermediate points on the U shaped portion of the member C to its two points of contact with the member B and so as to overlie in turn the tangential extremities 0. As thus positioned the brace-members D present anangle, advantageous as to function, to the curvature of the member B. Both the upper ends (2 and the lower ends d of the brace- -members D, are slightly bent at an angle to present a more effective surface contact. The upper ends 03' are secured at the intermediate points stated through the agency of suitable rivets (i The lower ends d are torecount the almost manifest advantages, 2. general economy of manufacture; including saving of material, operations to be performed thereon, and resultant precision of attachment; is coincident with'an increased rigidity and hence increased utility.
Havm now fully described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. An implement handle comprising the combination of a primary supporting memher, a looped extension member, said extension member being furthermore bifurcated and having its extremities overlying the side portions of said supporting member, a pair of brace members having ends aflixed to said extension member, the other ends of said brace members overlying said extremities, and means for simultaneously securing each brace member and extremity of said extension member to said supporting member.
2. An implement handle comprising the combination of a primary arched supporting member, an elongated looped extension member, said extension member being furthermore bifurcated and having its free extremities divergent and overlying opposite side portions of said supporting member, a pair of mainly straight brace members having ends aflixed respectively to an intermediate portion of said extension member, the other ends of said brace members overlying said divergent extremities at their points of'contact with said arched supporting member, and means including rivets and registering openings for simultaneously securing each brace member and extremity of said extension member to the common point of intersection with said supporting member.
3. An implement handle comprising the combination of a bail-shaped supporting member, a forked extension member having a pair of arms, said arms being furthermore
