GARDEN-PLOW.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,244, dated January 9, 1900.
Application filed May 31, 1899. Serial No. 718,846. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. S'roWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poolville, in the county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Garden-Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garden-plows,and has for its object to construct a cheap, simple, and effective plow of this character.
My improved garden-plow is adapted to be used by hand, and it comprises in its construction two traveling wheels arranged tandeni and journaled in the same side bars, the front wheel being of a greater diameter than the rear wheel. A foot-piece is connected to the side bars and carries an adjustable plow bit or shovel. The side bars are adjustably connected to the handles, thus providingtwo adjustments for the plow bit or shovelnamely, by shortening or lengthening the braces connecting the handles with the side bars or by adjusting the plow-bit independently in its foot-piece.
My invention further consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference will be employed to designate similar parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved garden-plow. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, of a portion of the plow.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 1 indicate the side bars, in the forward ends of which is journaled the front wheel 2. These side bars are bowed or bent downwardly near their rear ends in order that the axial line of the rear wheel 3 will be below the axial line of the front wheel 2. This rear wheel 3 is preferably of a less diameter than the front wheel 2 and is journaled in the side bars 1, at the rear ends thereof, in the same manner as the front wheel 2 is journaled in the forward ends of the side bars.
Connected to the inner faces of the side bars 1 by a bolt 4 is asubstantially V-shaped foot-piece or hanger 5, to which the plow bit or shovel 6 is connected by means of a bolt 7. The head of this bolt is countersunk in the plow bit or shovel, and the nut 8 of the same is of a size sufficient to engage the two rear edges of the foot-piece or hanger, and thus hold the plow bit or shovel in engagement with the two front edges thereof. I also oonmeet to this foot-piece or hanger by means of bolts 9 a pair of foot-braces 10, which are bowed or bent so as to bring the forward portion thereof in the same plane as the side bars 1 in order to provide clearance-space for the front wheel 2. The forward ends of these foot-braces 10 are secured by bolts 11 11 to the side braces 1. These bolts 11 11, employed for fasteningthe forward ends of these foot-braces 10, are also employed for securing the lower ends of the handles 12 12 to the side braces, the foot-braces being connected to the inner faces of the side braces and the handles 12 12 to the outer faces thereof.
The bolt 4:, which connects the hanger or foot-piece to the side bars 1, is also employed for securing to the said side bars the lower ends of the two braces 14 14, the upper ends of which are provided with one or more apertures to receive the bolt 15, which fastens the same to the handles.
The handles are suitably braced apart near their grips 16 by means f a brace 17.
The side bars 1, the foot-braces, foot-piece, braces 14:, and the handles 12 are all preferably constructed of cast-iron or like metal, though they may be constructed of any suit= able material. I have also constructed the wheels of cast-iron, with the tires thereof of equal width, though such details of construc tion may be changed in my invention without departing from the general spirit thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- .7
In a garden-plow, the combination of a pair of side bars, a traveling wheel journaled in the forward ends of said bars and a traveling wheel of less diameter journaled in the rear ends thereof, said bars being bowed 0r bent downwardly to bring the axial line of the rear wheel below the axial line of the front wheel, a foot-piece detachably connected to the side bars, an adjustable plow bit or shovel c0nneoted to said fo0t-piece, a pair of foot-braces connected to said foot-piece and t0 the side 10 bars, a pair of handles connected to the side bars, and a pair of adjustable braces connected to said handles and to the side bars, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. STOVE.
