Be it known that I, DAVID B. `ALLEN, a citizenl of the United States, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Newport and State o-f Rhode Island, havemade certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in adjustable beds, and it consists in the com-` binations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a device which may be attached to an ordinary bed near the upper end thereof which forms a shoulder and head-rest for the occupant of the bed and which may be adjusted at various angular positions for supporting the body at various inclinations.

A further object of my invention is to provide means for securing the attachment to the bed and for adjusting it toward or away from the end of the bed and for adjusting the attachment itself to fit beds of various widths.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper part of the bed showing my improved attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side View of the attachment, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section along the line of Fig. 2.

In carrying out my invention I provide a U-shaped frame consisting of the L-shaped members 1 and 2, each of these members being provided with slots such as those shown at 1X, 1y and 2X, 2y, the slots in one member being arranged to register with the slots in the other, and clamping devices 3 being provided to hold the parts together after adjustment to fit the bed to which the attachment is to be applied. A bed spring 4 is secured to the frame in the manner sho-wn.

The ends of the L-shaped members 1 and 2 are pivotally connected with the sides 5 and 6 respectively of the bed frame. In order to accomplish this I make use of a plate 7 (see Fig. 4) having a laterally extending portion 7x arranged to rest on the top of the side member 5 of the bed frame, the member 7X being bent downwardly'at 7 Y so asto form a hook for keeping the plate in position; The members 1 and 2 have integral hubs 8 and 9 respectively. The hub 8 is secured to the plate 7 by means of abolt 10 which passes through the hub and through the plate and is provided with a nut 11. The lower end of the plate 7 is provided with the bolts 12 which hold a clamping block 13 against the inner side of the frame member 5.

Integral with the hub 8 is a segmental gear 14 whose end is riveted or otherwise secured to the side member 1. This segment is arranged to mesh with a gear 15 which is carried on the end of a. hollow shaft 16. A plate 17 which bears on the side member 5 has an integral L-shaped eX- tension 17", t-he gear being disposed between the body portion of the plate 17 and its extension as shown in Fig. 3. Bolts 18 are provided which pass through the plate 17 and engage clamping blocks 19 in a similar manner that the bolts 12 engage the blocks 13 in Fig. 3. On the opposite side of the bed is a segment 14 similar to the segment 14 and a gear 15 which is engaged by it. The gear 15 is on the end of the shaft 20 which extends within the hollow shaft as shown in Fig. 1. A feather 21 is provided on the shaft 2O which enters a slot in the shaft 16 so as to transmit thev motion of the shaft 16 to the shaft 20.

Each of the sides 1 and 2 is provided withV a pivoted slotted link 22 which is secured to a slotted link 23 pivoted to the plate 17 by means of a set screw 24 which passes through the overlapping slots.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. This attachment, as stated, may be secured to a bed of any ordinary size by loosening the clamping' devices 3 and then pushing the parts together until the attachment is fitted to the bed and then clamping' the parts. The attachment may be shifted toward and away from the head of the bed by unloosening the nuts on the bolts 12 and 18 so as to loosen up on the clamping blocks 13 and 19 whereupon the attachment may be slid bodily along the top of the side members of the bed frame. Then in position t-he bolts may be tightened thus firmly securing the attachment to the bed.

In using the device a detachable handle 25 may be placed in the hexagonal end 16x of the hollow shaft 16 and the handle may be turned so as to shift the segments 111 and 14 and also the frame members 1 and 2 on the pivot bolts 10. Thus the rest may be elevated or lowered as shown in dotted lines` in Fig. 2. The rest may be clamped in any position by means of the set screws 24.
