To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED MARTINsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island7 in the county of Rock island and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sickle-Bar Holders, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis invention contemplates the provision of a holder for sickle bars or the like, while the latter are being sharpened.
rlhc primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a means by which the sickle bar is yieldably supported while being sharpened, thereby relieving the arms of the operator of undue weight, while both the sickle bar and supporting means therefor can be easily adjusted to the proper position with respect to the grinding device.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

Before entering into a detail description of what is herein shown I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, to which l do not limit myself and that such changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in. detail A indicates generally a grinding device, which as shown in this instance includes a frame 10, having a grind stone 12 mounted thereon for rotation, and operated by means of the foot pedals 13, the frame being provided with a seat 14 for the operator. Any suitable sharpening device iowever may be employed for bringing the sickle bar to a cutting edge, as this does not form a part of the invention.
rIfhe holder forming the subject matter of my invention preferably consists of a hollow arm 14 projecting horizontally from a fixed support 15 which may be a wall, tree or the like, the arm being mounted in a suitable bracket 16 to permit of a lateral swinging adjustment thereof. The arm has connected therewith at a point in its length one end of a brace rod 17, the opposite end being connected with a suitable bracket 18 mounted on the support 15 an appreciable distance above the bracket 16, and capable of lateral swinging movement with the arm. rIhe lower end of the arm is forked and embraces the arm 14, the terminals of the forked end of the brace being connected by means of a rivet 19, which latter passes through the arm 14.
In connection with the arm 14 l provide a means by which the sickle bar indicated at B can be yieldably supported, and as shown in this instance the means consists of a coiled spring Q0 fitted within the arm ll and having one end connected with a rivet 19 while its opposite end is secured to the adjacent end of a flexible element 21. The flexible element is trained over a pulley :22 as shown, and is suspended from the forward end of the arm being connected with the flexible element 23 which latter is preferably in the nature of a chain. Manifestly the sickle bar B is supported from the chain, which latter is not only sufficiently strong for this purpose, but permits of a quick adjustment of the bar throughout the length of the chain, so that the bar can be properly positioned with respect to the grind stone 11. A hook element 2d is employed, and is adapted to have one of its ends hooked between the teeth of the sickle bar, while the opposite end is adapted to be interchangeably hooked into the links of the chain, which arrangement allows the sickle bar to be supported at the proper angle to successively bring the teeth into engagement with the grind stone 11. By reason of the fact that the arm 14 is mounted for lateral adjustment, coupled with the fact that the sickle bar is supported from one end by means of the flexible element 23, it will be noted that the bar B can be swung to either side of the operator, or in a position most convenient for the operator to handle while bringing the sickle bar to a cutting edge. The yieldable connection between the sickle bar and the arm 14 supports the major portion of the weight of the bar, thereby relieving the arms of the operator of undue weight and strain.
