CARRIAGE-TOP SETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,187, dated February 27, 1883.
Application filed November 11, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JACOB STOODY, of Ripley, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Carriage- Top Setter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding the carriage-top bows in the proper position for securing the covering on the bows.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective of carriage-bows held in place by means of my improved carriage-top setter. of the adjustable side brace. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal view of the bar, showing the serrations. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the plate, showing the serrations on the inner surface.
A bar, A, is provided with longitudinal slots at b c d 6, through which screws B are passed, which terminate in clamp-hooks 0, adapted to hold on the bows D of a carriage-top. The screws B also pass through plates E on the opposite or outer side of the bar A. The outer surface of the bar A is serrated or roughened, and the inner surfaces of the plates or clips E are also serrated or roughened for the purpose of preventing the plates E from slip ping on the barA. Winged nuts F are screwed on the screws B. A brace, H, is formed of two bars, H H the ends of which overlap each other, the overlapping ends beingprovided with longitudinal slots f, through which screws J are passed, which are provided with winged nuts K. The lower end of each brace H is pivoted on a seat-iron, L, and a pivot, M, at the upper end of the brace secures it to the corresponding horizontal bar, A. The bars A H H are provided with marks, which are numbered 42. They indicate the positions of the several parts for a forty-two-inch top, so that the frame can be adjusted without any Fig. 2 is a perspective viewfurther measurement. The bars A H H can also 'be provided with corresponding marks for tops of other sizes.
For adjusting the top-setter the lower edge of the bar H must be placed on the mark 42 of the bar H, and all the plates E are adjusted in position at the marks 42 on the bar A. A three-bow top is shown; but afour-bow top can be adjusted in a like manner, and bows of other sizes can also be adjusted in the manner described. After the bows-have been adjusted the covering is secured on the same, and the bar A and brace are removed and the usual permanent braces are attached to the bows.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for setting carriage-tops, the
bar having subdividing-marks and adjustable clamp-hooks, and the extensible or adjustable brace having a subdividing -mark, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The bar" A, provided with subdividingmarks, combined with screw clamp-hooks U and the brace H, provided with subdividingmarks, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The bar A, provided with slots at, b, c, d, and e, combined with the clamp-hooks 0, provided with screws B, the plates E, and the winged nuts F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device for setting carriage-tops, the bar having a series of slots, subdividing-marks, and clamp-hooks, and the extensible or adjustable brace having a subdividing-mark, and pivoted to the said bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the bar A, of adjustable clamp-hooks G, the bars H H the screw J, and the winged nut K, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
J AOOB STOODY.
