SHIELD 0R PROTECTOR FOR STOP-COURS.

To all 'whomkz't may concern.;
Be it known that I, FRnDnRIoK J. GEMUNDER, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Philadelphia, in the county of' Philadelphia and State vof Pennsylvania', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields or Protectors for Stop-Cocks, of which the ,following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shields or protectors for stop cocks, particularly adapted for use in connection with a gas stove or range which'when in locked position, securely holds all of the cocks in closed position, and if' any of the cocks be partially o-pen, the closing of the shield will turn the cocks to closed position and securely hold them against possibility of accidental movement. I
A further object is to provide a device of this character which l'may be readily attached to any ordinary gas stove' which when in posit-ion will not only hold the cocks in closed position, but will prevent engagement therewith, so that they cannot beuaccidentally opened. l
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is of extreme simplicity, which may be manufactured and sold. at a low price, and which will not interfere in any way with the ordinary operation of the cocks, except when the device isr in` its locked or closed position.
With; these and other objects' in view, the invention consists incertain novel features of construction and combinations and arran ements of parts, as will be'more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in front elevation illustrating a gas range showing my improvements thereon. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary view in sec-l tion on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is an inner face view of my improved device, and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the bracket 17, which is secured to t-he side of the oven as seen most clearly in Fig. 1.

.These protectors are precisely alike in construction. Each protector consists of a plate of sheet metal bent u on a longitudinal line, so that the plate Ear-ms two members 6 and 7 located at an acute angle relative to each other. This anglevis less than a right angle as seen most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, and themember 7 at the end of t-he device is made with extensions 8 curved betweenv their ends forming half bearings which coperate with similar shaped half bearings in straps 9, the latter clamped to the extensions by means of bolts 10 and nuts l1. The bearings thus formed are adapted to receive the gas pipe 2, and of course in assembling the parts,the straps 9- will be placed on the device when the latter is in position against the gas pipe, and-to remove the device, it will be necessary to remove the straps. The bearings` are located a distance below the lower edge of member 7, so that the device may be moved to locked position as shown in Fig. 2. In other words, as thel vertical portions of thecocks extend above the gas pipes, it is necessary to position the lower edge of the shield above the gas pipes and project the member y 7 at an angle so as to allow the member 6 to lie in a substantially horizontal plane.
The handles 12 of the cocks will be engaged by the member 7 of the shield, so that' these handles 12 will be held against turning movement. To lock the shield, a turnv button 13 is provided in member 6, and
this turn-button has an arm '14 at its inner end which is adapted to be positioned through an opening 15in the top 16 of the range, and when turned at an angle securely hold the shield in place. The turn-button 13 for the oven cock holding shield locks in a slotted bracket 17 secured to the side of the range. This bracket is'shown in detail in Fig. 5, andy in end elevation in Fig. 1. The shield is shown in closed position holding the cocks against turning movement. To release the shield, Kthe turn-button is moved and drawn out of the slot in the oven top or bracket 17 as the case may be, and
.way over and hold it in proper position ready to be returned to locked position.
Various slight changes mightl be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from myY invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,-
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v1. A device of` the character described, comprising a plate bent forming two members at an angle to each other, extensions on one member having half bearings between their ends, straps secured to said eX- tensions and-having half bearings therein 'adapted to secure the device upon a gas supply pipe, and a locking device on said shield adjacent the free end thereof adapted to secure the same with one of its members against the handles of the gas supply cocks, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a plate bent forming two meinbers at an angle to 'each other less than a right angle, extensions on one member, straps secured to said "extensions, said lextensions and straps bent forming bearings to receive a gas pipe, a xed vpart of the stove having an opening therein, and a turnbutton supported by the other member and adapted to be projected through the opening and secure the device in closed position, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a gas range having an opening in its top, a gas supply pipe, a series of gas supply cocks in said and handles on said cocks, of a shield comprising a plate bent at an angle forming two members, extensions on one member mounted to -turn on the gas pipe, and a rotary locking device on the other member adapted to be projected through the opening in the range top and secure the device against movement with one of its members positioned againstthe sides of the cock handles, substantially as described.
