; SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS STOVES.

JOHN EfCADIG-AN, OF NEWYORK, N. Y.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-STOVES.
Application filed April 5,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN E. CADIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, ilrthe county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety attachment for gas stoves, and the principal object is to provide a device which, prevents accidental shutting'oif or turning on of gas in a gas stove.
It often happens that in moving about a stove that the gas cock is opened or closed by accident from brushing the clothing against the hand lever, and the present device provides a simple and efiicient means for looking the handle in any position to which it may be moved.
In the accompanying drawing consisting of one sheet Figure 1, is a top plan view of my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the two attachments forming my inven- 7 tion.
the valve or gas cook 2. 5 represents a collar formed to fit about a supply pipe and having an attached segmental portion 6 provided with an upstanding flange 7 The flange 7 at its upper edge is provided with stiffening rib 8 as shown in Fig. 4; and is also provided with an elongated aperture 9,
at the lower edge of which are formed teeth, shoulders or abutments 10. A screw or bolt 11 is adapted to secure the collar 5 to the pipe 1.
12 represents a collar adapted to fit about the inner portion of the handle 4 and proj acting downwardly into a pair of ears through which passes a securlng screw 13,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 371,334.
The screw 13 forms the pivot for an elongated finger 14 provided at its outer end with a knob or finger piece 15. A spring 16 is fastened between the handle 4 and the collar 5 and bears at its free end on finger 14 so as to force the same downwardly.
When the attachment is in place the finger 14 protrudes through the aperture 9 as shown in Fig. 3 and it is pressed down by spring 16 into engagement with the shoulders 10. When it is desired to move the handle 4 it is necessary to raise the outer end of the finger 14 until said finger is disengaged from the shoulders 10 and is moved into the upper elongated portion of the aperture 9. The handle 4 is now moved to the desired position and upon releasing the finger 4 the same is again depressed by the spring 16 into engagement with the teeth 10 thereby locking the handle securely against accidental displacement.
While I have described what I vconsider to be the best embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish to be considered as limited to the exact details herein described nor to anything less than the whole of my invention as herein set forth and as hereinafter pointed out in the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is In a device of the character described, the combination of a member comprising attaching means and an upstanding flange provided with an aperture having abutment elements formed at its edge, a locking member adapted to be secured to for movement with the handle of a gas cock, said locking member being adapted to extend through said aperture and to engage with said abutment elements to prevent operation of said handle, one end of said locking member being formed into a handle for releasing said lockin member from said abutment elements.
Tn testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOHN E. OADIGAN.
