SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I762,001, dated J une '7, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, JOHN C. ScHLrrrEN- HARDT, residing at Newark, and JULrUs E. DORNIG, residing at Vailsburg, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Cocks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to prevent the accidental opening of the gas-cock, whereby the gas is permitted to escape into the room and injuriously affect the occupant; to secure a device of greater neatness of appearance when applied to the burner; to reduce the cost of construction, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved safety attachment for gas-cocks and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will Abe hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several lig.- ures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a gas-cock having our improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front view of the safety device detached from the cock.

11 indicates the valve plug or key, bymeans of which the passage for the gas through the cock is opened and closed, the said valve plug or key having a reduced round part 12 and a flat finger portion 13, by means of which last the said plug or key is easily turned by the thumband finger.
The safety device comprises a sheet-metal piece which is doubled or U-shaped at its touch.

The arms being fastened around said body, as above detailed, the extension 16 projects from said arms in a direction parallel with the body of the cock away from the plug or key and at some little distance from said plug or key has the bend or curvature 14, where the upper extension connects with the lower extension 15. Said lower extension is longer than the upper and vprojects across the longitudinal axial line of the 'said plug vor key, in which line it is transversely slotted, as indicated in Fig. 2, the extension being made wider at said slot to enable the said slot to be properly made. Said extension 15 when attached to the cock lies normally in the central horizontal plane of the iiat linger portion, as shown in'Fig. 2, the said linger portion lying transversely in the slot 20, thus being locked or prevented-from turning to its open position, (shown in the broken-outline.)
To open the key or plug, the operator grasps the flat portion 18 and in doing so raises the extension 15, so that the central enlargement 20 of the slot receives the reduced shank or part 12 of the key, the flat part clearing the narrow portions of said slot, as will be understood. Thus the key or plug may be turned to its open position.
' -On closing off the gas by turning the flat portion to its transverse or closing position the resilient extension 15 assumes its normal position with considerable energy, producing a clicking noise by which the operator will receive an audible signal of its locking, and said spring will strike the fingers, so that the signal will be emphasized by the sense of Being locked automatically, there is no ,danger of accidental or inadvertent opening of the valve, as will be obvious.V
Having thus described theinvention, what we claim as new is-- 1. The improved Safety attachment for IOO cocks, comprising a sheet-metal piece bifurcated at one end, and made U-shaped at the other, one of the extensions of the U-shaped part having a transverse slot and means for fastening thc attachment to the bod5T or' the cock.
2. The improved safety attachment for gascocls, comprising a resilient piece of metal having the arms 17, extension 16, at an angle to said arms, the curvilinear bend 14, and longer extension 15, adapted to cross the axial line ofthe plug or key and having a trans- Verse slot, the center of which is enlarged, and `means for joining the extremities of said arms, substantially as set forth.
3. The improved safety attachment for gascocks, comprising a resilient piece olf metal having the arms 17, extension 1G, at an angle to said arms, thc curvilinear bend 1-1, and longer extension 15, adapted to cross the axial line of the plug or key and having a transverse slot, and means for joining' the extremities of said arms, substantially as set forth.
