To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD GOLDBERG, a Russian subject, and resident of Holyoke, in the county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVaists, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention for improvements in waists, to be more generally worn as an underwaist by children, particularly pertains to provisions and appliances for the securing thereto of hose supporters in a most desirable manner.

'The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the ad vantages thereof are hereinafter rendered apparent, and the novel features are defined in the claim.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side view showing the waist, as in a more or less flattened-out condition, and as equipped with the improved appliances. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2'2; but in this figure, for the purpose of increased clearness of illustration, the fabric is represented as of greatly exaggerated thickness.

In the drawings A designates the body ortion of a waist having the usual shape as illustrated. The waist is adapted to be closed at the rear by suitable fastenings as Z). Reinforcing members f, in the form of binding tape are applied to the body portion in the usual manner. The body portion of the waist at each side is made with a comparatively long and narrow protective flap 9 extending downwardly below the waist line 0:, and it is made of an upwardly widening form at its portion 71. adjacent the waist line. This flap has on the outer face of the lower portion thereof a transversely arranged strap retaining tape 2' which is secured by sewing to the opposite edge portions of such flap. As the garments are at present manufactured, the cloth is cut in such manner that the flaps are integral with the body forming portion of the waist.

The garment is provided at each side with a section of fabric of single or double ply, which comprises a portion j upwardly widening toward the arm scye and stitched onto the outer face of the waist from about the waist line to its upper end; and such section of fabric also comprises a tongue like portion m which extends downwardly below the waist line and lies against and unattached relatively to the outer side of the protective flap 9.

B represents a strap or webbing provided at its lower end with a hose supporter 0, an upper portion of which strap is engaged through said transverse retaining tape 2' and has at its upper end a buckle t to be detachably and adjustably secured to said tonguelike strip at any desired portion along the length of the same, the range of take-up or adjustment being proportionate to the length of the-depending tongue-like strip.

The flap 9 provides ameans of protection to the wearer of the waist whereby abrasive action of the buckle against the thigh or leg is prevented; the transverse tape serves as a retainer for keeping the hose supporter strap always in the desirable closed relation to the tongue and flap, and the making of the upper portion of the fabric section which comprises the tongue of upwardly widening form and stitching it along its opposite edges to the body of the waist insures a strong and durable suspension support of the lower free portion of the tongue.

Although the garment has been illustrated and described with particularity in respect of certain minor details not essential to the gist of the invention, departure or variations therefrom may be made within the purview of my claim.

I claim A waist, the body portion of which at each side is made with a comparatively long and narrow protective flap extending downwardly below the waist line, and having on the outer lower face a transversely arranged retaining strap, and said waist being also provided at each side with a section of fabric having a portion upwardly widening toward the arm scyes, and secured to the outer face of the waist, and which comprises a free tongue-like portion extending below the waist line, a hose supporter attached to said tongue-like portion, and adapted to be retained in position by said transverse strap.
