MOSES CHAMPEROv HAWKINS, OF EDINBOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent 103,611, dated May .31, 1870 IMPROVEMENT IN HEMMER FOR SEWING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To ,all whom Qt may concern accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in hemm'ers for sewing-machines, and consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, and as particularly specified in the claim.
Figure l is a plan of the bottom of my improved hemmer;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 is a plan of the top.
A is the plate, for the .support of the folding-plate and tongue, and inwhich the hem-guide is arranged.
It is provided with a wide notch, B, at the receiving end, 'the. wall a of which is straight, and the wall I) curvesaround at the base 0 to a junction with'a.
The part I) of the plate has a short arm, E, extcnding nearly across the mouth of the slot B, and of about hallvlthe thickness thereof, on which the tongue F is supported, so as to extend toward the base of the slot parallel with the wall a.
G is the spiral foldin'g plate, attached to the upper face of the part H of the plate, and folding around the tongneF in the usual manner.
The hem-guide groove K in the bottom of the plate A, is widened towards the mouth, the wall toward the operator being-curyed away from the other wall, so that the cloth may-be turned readily to hem curved edges.
The wall a of the part H of the plate, serves as a cloth-guide forthefolded cloth in advancing to the needle through the hemmer, and holds it up to the tongue and folder, so that it may be readily shoved along to the needle at the beginning,
The hem may be folded three times by turning the first fold wider than the space between the walls a and b, and then turning the edge under-enough for it to pass the point a: of the wall I), which will thereafter act as a folder, and continue to turn the said edge, which is again turned by the folder G. But if it is only required to turn the hem twice, as is commonly done, the first fold is only made the same, or less in width than the space between the said parts D and 'H.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hemmer for sewing-machines, composed of the plates A, tongue F, folder G, and groove K, shaped as shown, when all are constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
