Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo GEORGE DOHN, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGS FOR RIGGING.
Speclicalion forming part of Letters Patent No. I03,585, dated May 3l, 1&70.
panying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon. l
This invention relates to that class on tongs called rigging-tongs7 which are especially designed for `use in setting` up the rigging of ships; and it consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are elevations of my improved tongs.
A A represent clamps adapted for grasping the rope.
B B represent the levers or arms of the tongs, by means of which the pressure is applied. One of these arms is provided with a ring and the other with a pulley, as shown. A chain, C, is used, which passes through the ring and over the pulley, and also about the block D.
Vhen desired, the tongs are operated by means of a. block and fall, attached to the eye E of the block D for that purpose.
The center line of the clamp forms an angle with the plane of the levers B, in order that when in operation the said levers may be free to approach each other without coming in contact with the rope or rigging. The jaws or clamps are movable, and are attached to the ends of the levers by pins F F. The inner faces of the jaws are concave, and provided with corrugations GG, for the purpose of more effectually holding the rope or rigging.
I do not claim to have invented riggingtongs provided with corrugated jaws, but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In rigging-tongs of the described construction, the levers B, provided with pulley and ring, when employed in connection with the chain C and block D, as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
GEORGE DOHN. [L s] Vitnesses:
