The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, SAMUEL DoUGLAss, of Kalamazoo, in thecounty oi' Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, 'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the let-ters ot' reference marked thereon. A
This invention has for its object the production of a pair of tongs which shall be capable ot' serving other usei'ul purposes besides those for which they are ordinarily employed, without materially increasing the cost of producing the same,and consists mainly in continuing the legs ofthe tongs above the joint which connects thcn1,and in so forming their upper ends that they are adapted for the purposes-desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use xny invention, I will now proceed to fully describe the construction of the same.
A A' represent the legs of the tongs, which may be constructed in any suitable manner. These legs are continued beyond the joiutB, by means of which -they are connected together in any ofthe Well-known ways,
and are formed at their upper ends into such shapesV as will adapt them for the use desired of them. In the drawings, the upper end of the part A is formed into a hook, which may be advantageously used for lifting vessels from the fire, and for other similar purposes.

The described implement may be constructed atV a small cost, and is well adapted fin' the various uses for which it is intended.
