To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY MORLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Patehogue, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Curtain-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved curtain stretcher arranged to fold with a view to provide a comparatively small bundle for conveniently storing the curtain stretcher when not in use and to allow quick and accurate adjustment to accommodate curtains of different sizes. For the purpose mentioned use is made of side rails, adjusting bars intermediate the said side rails, pairs of links connecting the adjusting bars with the said side rails, slides slidable on the adjusting bars, and end spacing bars pivotally connected with the said slides and adjustably connected with the said side rails to hold the latter spaced the desired distance apart.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curtain stretcher in extended position ready for use; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the curtain stretcher partly folded; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same; Fig. A is a side elevation of the curtain stretcher with the parts in folded position; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the curtain stretcher on the line 55 of Fig. 2.

The parallel side rails A and A are provided along their inner edges with the usual hooks B, B for engagement with the sides of the curtain to be stretched. The side rails A and A are provided at the outside near the ends of the rails with sockets C for engagement by lugs D adapted to rest on the floor to support the curtain stretcher a desired distance above the floor or other support. Each of the side rails A and A is formed of two middle sections A A, pivotally connected with each other at the under side by hinges E and end sections A connect by hinges E with the sections A and similar end sections A connect by hinges E with the sections A The side rails A and A are provided at their end portions with sets of apertures G and G adapted to be engaged by pins H, II pivotally connecting the end or spacing bars I, I and I I with slides J, J mounted to slide on the outer ends of adjusting bars N and N parallel to the side rails A and A and approximately midway between the same as plainly inclicated in Fig. 1. The slides J and J are engaged by pins K, K adapted to engage apertures L, L arranged on the outer ends of the adjusting bars N, N, each of which is preferably made in sections N N connected with each other at the under side by a hinge E. The inner edges of the spacing bars I, I and I I are provided with hooks B for engagement with the ends of the curtain to be stretched on the curtain stretcher. The outer ends of the spacingbars I, I and I I are provided with apertures 1 any one of which may be engaged by the corresponding pin H or H to permit of setting the side rails A and A the desired distance apart according to the width of the curtain to be stretched on the curtain stretcher. On removing the pins H, H and K, K the slides J and J can be moved lengthwise on the adjusting bars N, N according to the length of the curtain to be stretched on the curtain stretcher, it being understood that when the desired position is reached the pins K and K are inserted in the slides J, J and the corresponding apertures L, L, and the pins H, H are inserted in the corresponding apertures I and G, G.

It is understood that the spacing bars I, I and I, I extend at all times at right angles to the side rails A, A and the adjusting bars N, N. Pairs of links O, O are pivotally connected with the under side of the adjusting bar N and with the sections A, A of the side rails A, A, and similar pairs of links 0 0 connect the under side of the adjusting bar N with the sections A A of the side rails A and A, it being understood that the said pairs of links 0, O and 0 0 form braces for the frame, to hold the same in rectangular position when the parts are extended for stretching the curtain, as indicated in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the rails A and A can be readily moved toward or from each other by giving a corresponding longitudinal movement to the adjusting bars N, N at the time the spacing bars I, I and I I are disconnected from the said side rails so as to permit of adjusting the side rails according to the width of the curtain to be stretched at the time. It will also be not-iced that by adjusting the spacing bars I, I and I 1 toward or from each other the curtain stretcher is adjusted according to the length of the curtain, it being understood that the ends of the curtain are attached to the hooks B When it is desired to fold the curtain stretcher into a small bundle, the lugs D are removed from the sockets C, the pins H, H are withdrawn to permit of swinging the spacing bars I, I and I I inward into position over the adjusting bars N, N as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, at the same time the rails A, A can be moved toward each other and close to the adjusting bars N, N owing to the pairs of links 0, O and O connecting the adjusting bars N, N with the said side rails A, A. The sections A can be folded upon the sections A and the sections A can be folded upon the sections A and then the folded up sections A, A and A A can be folded one on top of the other, as indicated in Fig. 4:, and in a like manner the sections N and N of each of the adjusting bars N and l can be folded one on top of the other so that the whole curtain stretcher forms a comparatively small bundle which takes up very little storage room.

By reference to Fig. 2, it will be not-iced that when the side rails A and A are moved alongside the adjusting bars N, N then the hinges E E and E E are in transverse alinement with each other so as to permit of conveniently folding the bars one on top of the other, as shown in Fig. A. By reference to Figs. 1 and 4. it will also be noticed that the hinges E are considerably longer than the hinges E, E and E so as to accommodate the sect-ions A A between the sections A A of the rails A and A.

The slides J and J are preferably pro vided at their sides with inwardly-extending flanges J (see Fig. 5) engaging correspondingly shaped grooves N formed in the sides of the adjusting bars N, N.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A curtain stretcher, comprising side.

rails, adjusting bars intermediate the said side rails, pairs of links pivotally connecting the said adjusting bars wit-h the said side rails, slides mounted to slide on the said adjusting bars, and cross bars connected with the said slides and adjust-ably connected with the said side rails.

2. A curtain stretcher, comprising side rails, adjusting bars intermediate the said side rails, pairs of links pivotally conneoting each adjusting bar with the said side rails, the links of each pair diverging from the corresponding adjusting bar, slides adjust-ably mounted on the said adjusting bars, and end cross bars extending at right angles to the said side rails and the said adjust-ing bars, the said cross bars being pivoted at their inner ends on the said slides and the outer ends of the cross bars being adjustably secured to the said side rails.

3. A curtain stretcher, comprising side rails provided with hooks and each formed of middle sections and end sections, the sections being hinged together, central adjusting bars each made in sections hinged together, slides mounted to slide on the said adjusting bars, fastening means for adjustably securing the slides to the said adjusting bars, end cross bars provided with hooks and arranged at right angles to the said side rails and the said adjusting bars, the said end cross bars being pivot-ally connected at their inner ends with the said slides, means adjustably connecting the outer ends of the said cross bars with the said side rails, and pairs of links pivot-ally connecting the said side rails with the said adjusting bars.
