THREAD-HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 6, 1911. Serial No. 637,232.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
To all whom tt may concerm- Be it known that I, EvERIs'rE J. DURAND, a subject of the King of England,.residin g at Cheboygan, in the county of Cheboygan have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements' in Thread-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as 1o will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make' and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to new and useful impplovements in thread holding devices.
object of this invention is the proviwhich is located a rack adapted to support balls of twine or the like, the said receptacle being provided with suitable means for Guiding the thread through one wall' hereof` whereby the said through the wall, may bewound to form a thread of reater thickness'than the individual threads.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an apparatus to be -used for -2 holding wax ends, they said threads adapted to be. supported in such manner that they may be severed in equal lengths.
. A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this char 30' acter, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufactura4 'reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated:
With Ithe above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features formations, combinations and arrangements of part-s to be hereinafter more fullyv described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional' view of my improved invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section throughV the same,.and'Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detailed viewsof the same. l Referring to the drawing by characters of 1 designates generally my improved apparatus, which consists of a receptacle 2, comprising oil- set side walls 3 and 4,connected at their extremities by end walls 5. The side ` walls 3 and 4 are 50 slightly less in height than the end walls 5,
while the wall 4 has secured `thereto an 1nwardly extending supporting ledge 6, upon which are located guides 7, the purpose of Awhich will be later disclosed.
A pair of uprights 8 are secured to the op- -regulating the upper ends a pair of rails 9, the upper edges of which are beveled inwardly, as indicated by the numeral 10 for engagement with the lower tapered edge 11 of a movable bar 12, which is hinged, as indicated by the numeral 13, to the opposite end walls 5 of the receptacle 2.
A partition 13 lis slidvable in slots 14 formed in the inner face of the end walls 5, adjacentthe side or rear wall 3 of the receptacle, and is held against displacement by wedge blocks 15, which are adapted to be inserted into the slots 14 ifor engagement with the upper edges of the partition 13', which obviously prevents its displacement. The upper edge of the partition 13 is corrugated, as indicated by the numeral 1,6,
and is connected with the rear wall 3 at.
intervals throughout its length by spaced parallel rods 17, between which and the inner faces of the wall 3 and partition 13 are loosely held spools'lS of thread or the like.
The free ends of the thread are passed between the rails9 and bar 10, and are extended through the guides 7, which consist of ya pair of inwardly convexed plates 19 and 20, the former of which is rigidly secured to the supporting ledge 6, while the latter is slidably located upon a pin 21, which passes concentrically through the plate 19, and is normally forced thereagainst by means of a tension spring 22,
which surrounds the pin 21, with its offset ends bearing against a collar 23, slidably located upon the said pin 21, and limited in its upward movement by the head 24 thereof` and the upper concaved face of the plate 20, As the thread is passed between `the plates 19 and 20, `these said plates will be yieldingly forced into engagement with the threads, which provides a means ease with which the thread may be drawn from the receptacle.
-A suitable coveror closure 25 is hinged,
as indicated by the numeral 26, to the up- .per edge of the rear wall or side 3 of the receptacle, and is provided upon its opposite ends with extensions 2T and 28, the former of which is adapted to abut against the rear edges of the ends 5, while the latteris adapted to abut against the forward edges of the ends 5 andbe held slightly in spaced relation above the upper edge of the front wall 4, which serves to permit the passa e therethrough of the above-mentione y threads. The closure 25 may be for CIK
locked to the receptacle by means of turn buttons 29, or any other suitable means.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be manifest that when spools of thread have been placed inthe rack and the cnds thereof passed between the rails 9 and bar 12land through the guides 7, extended through the front oi the cabinet, and wound together, that sections of the thread may be severed, euch of which will be of equal length.4 n
From the liregoing disclosure, taken in connection with 'the accompanying drawings;it will be manifest that a thread holder of the nature described is provid-ed for which will full all of the necessary ree quirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what lclaim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device of the nature described coinprising a receptacle, a partition located therein, rods connecting the *said partition with one Wall ofthe receptacle, forming a raekfor the support of spools of thread,
'rails supported within the receptacle, a vhinged bar removably engaging the rails,
whereby the said thread will be.prevented from tangling, pins mounted Withinl thereceptacle, stationary plates engaging the pins, slidable plates located upon the pins, springs carried by the pins and forcing the slidable plates into engagement with the stationary plates, whereby tension will bc exerted upon the thread in passing between the plates, and a closure for said receptacle.
ln testimonyV whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EVERISTE JOSEPH DURAND.
`Witnessesz SAnlE SPENCER, THOMAS S. MCGINN.
