GARMENT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
Application filed January 25, 1910, Serial No. 540,085. Renewed June 18, 1912. Serial No. 704,468.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM S'r. GLMR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Garment-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for holding trousers or other garments in a compact and stretched condition, thereby facilitating the storage of the same and at the same time serving to press the garment.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap device for the stated purpose in which the garment will be supported in folded condition, thereby securing utmost compactness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the folding of the garment will be utilized for stretching the same.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1. is a side elevation of the device in open condition; Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof in folded condition; Fig. 3, is a front elevation of the holder in open condition but the clamps in closed position. Fig. 1 is a perspective of the upper end of the device, showing the clamping means.
The device comprises a middle bar 1, a top member 2 and a bottom member 3, side bars 4 connecting the middle and top bars as a rectangular frame and side bars 5 connecting the middle and bottom bars, the upper and lower bars thus being connected by the middle bar, which thus serve as a piv oted conection therefor. Said middle bar is preferably bent or formed with eyes 15 at the ends to retain the side bars 1, 5 thereon. The top member 2 is preferably formed as an elongated loop, being formed, for example, of a piece of wire bent downwardly at each end to form a seat 6 for the side bars 4, then upwardly and inwardly, the end portions being twisted together as at 7 with one end extending directly upward, as shown at 8 to form a catch pin. The bottom member 3 is similarly formed as an elongated loop having upward bends 9 at its ends to form seats for the side bars 5 and having its end portions fastened by twisting as at 10, and one of the ends being bent around to form a hook 11. A clamp bar 12 is provided with an eye 13 at one end fitting on one end portion of the loop-shaped top member 2, so as to enable said clamp to be turned outwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, or inwardly to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, in which said bar extends longitudinally in front of the lower part of the loop-shaped top member 2, said clamp bar 12 having a hook 16 at its end to engage over the top bar of the top member. A similar clamp bar 14 is provided for the bottom member pivoting on one end of the loop shaped bottom member to enable it to be swung in similar manner over the upper bar of the bottom member 3 and having a book 17 to engage over the bottom bar of the lower member 3.
The clamp bars 12 and 1 1 are pivoted by their eyes 13, said eyes engaging with the end portion of the loop-shaped members 2 and 3 in such manner that each of said clamp bars can be swung transversely to the plane of the loop-shaped members 2 and 3 to and from said loop-shaped members to act in clamping or unclamping the goods, or can be swung parallel to said plane to enable it tobe hooked over the loop-shaped member.
The device is used for example in hanging and stretching a pair of trousers as follows :The clamp members 12, 14 are turned outwardly to the posit-ion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and the holder is opened up by turning its two frames on the central member 1 to position shown in Fig. 3, so that the said two frames extend in substantially the same plane. The trousers indicated at 18 are placed on the holder with the upper end of the trousers overlying the top member 2 and the lower end of the trousers overlying the bottom member 3. The two clamp members 12, 14; are then turned over on top of the trousers and pressed down onto the loop-shaped members 2 and 3, and are retained in that position by snapping the books 16, 17 at the outer ends of said clamp members over the members 2 or 3 as the case may be, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The device is then in condition for serving the usual purpose of a garment hanger. An additional advantage is secured by bending it up into position shown in Fig. 2, this operation folding the garment into more compact shape and at the same time further stretching the same by bending the garment around the central member 1.
What I claim is l. A garment support comprising a central bar, two pairs of side bars, each formed with eyes at each end, the eyes at the inner ends of each of the side bars engaging around the said central bar near the ends thereof, and an end member at each end of each of the pairs of side bars consisting of wire bent in the shape of an elongated loop whose length corresponds to the distance between the outer ends of the side bars, the eyes at the outer ends of said side bars engaging with said loops at the end portions thereof, said loops being bent intermediate their ends to form inter-engaging pin and hook members, and a clamp bar formed with an eye engaging around each end. member at one end thereof to pivotally support said clamp bar on said end member, said clamp bar being formed with a hook at its other end to engage the end member, said clamp bar being movable by its eye connection with the end member in a direction trans verse to the plane of the loop-shaped end member to move it toward or from the end member so as to perform the clamping operation and to be movable parallel to the plane of the loop-shaped end member to enable its hook to be engaged with the end member.
2. A garment support comprising a central bar, two pairs of side bars, each formed with eyes at each end, the eyes at the inner ends of each of the side bars engaging around the said central bar near the ends thereof, and an end member at each end of each of the pairs of side bars consisting of wire bent in the shape of an elongated loop whose length corresponds to the distance between the outer ends of the side bars, the eyes at the outer ends of said side bars engaging with said loops at the end portions thereof, each of said loops having a bend near each end, in which said eyes are seated, said loops being bent intermediate their ends to form inter-engaging pin and hook members, and a clamp bar formed with an eye engaging around each end member at one end thereof to pivotally support said clamp bar on said end member, said clamp bar being formed with a hook at its other end to engage the end member, said clamp bar being movable by its eye connection with the end member in a direction trans verse to the plane of the loop-shaped end member to move it toward or from the end member so as to perform the clamping operation and to be movable parallel to the plane of the loop-shaped end members to enable its hook to be engaged with the end member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 19th, day of January, 1910.
