vAmma/mm mea october 25,1911. semina. 656,573;
To all whom 'it may concerm Be it known that I, ALIonM. MINCHIN, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Evart, in the county of Osceola. State ofg Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and 'exactdescription of the invention,
such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to animprovement in mattresses.
The principal .object of the invention is to provide a 'mattress' of a plurality of hinged sections, whereby'the mattressmay be easily turned or transported as desired.
' Another'object of theinvention is to` provide a mattress of a plurality of sections hinged together in a -manner to permit of each sect-ion being folded upon or below the other section. Another object of the invention is to provide a mattress having handles attached thereto of novel construction, by means Iof which the 'mattress may be easily moved.
A further object of the invention' is to provide a mattress, which is provided with a diagonalreinforcing strip'at each "corner of the top and bottom, each stripbeing disposed between a pair of handles, whereby any tendency of themattress to tear when the saine is moved by means of either of the handles is prevented.
Ast-ill further object of the invention is to provide a mattress of the character de: scribed, which is extremely simple in construction, it being composed of a minimum l' number 'of parts, is therefore cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects inview, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of;parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompan .'ng drawings, and pointed outfin the c aim `,hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction with zin the scope of the claim may beresorted t0 withoutdeparting from the spirit-or'sacriicing any'of the advantages of the inventlOIl.
- In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mattress showing the sections ldisposed in open relation, Fig. 2 is a peri[spective view of the mattress showing the sections in their folded I relation,- liig. 3 is a vertical" longitudinal `sectional view larged detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting the handle and rein- Aforcing strip to the cover.
Like reference numerals designatel corresponding' partsin -all the figures of the drawing. A
ReferringA to the drawing, the invention comprises a mattress'consisting oftwo like sections A-'A. Each section comprises' a cover formed of tickin consisting-.of a top 5,Y a bottom 6, sides '1 -g? and ends 8 8, the meetingedges thereof being seamed and se cured by rows of stitchingB. The sections A'L-A are connected 'at their meeting ends through the mattress, `and Fig. 4 is an enby a longitudinal 9. constituting a.
hinge. One edge 9* of the strip is connected at the upper edge of one section, and the' other edge 9h is connected to the lower edge i .of the other section. By means of this hinge either section can be folded uponvor below theifot-her section.
- Associated witheach side 7 and'end 8 of each. sectionisa pair .of handles 10-4-10 formed of ticking or any other suitable material. Each pair of these-handles is disposed adjacent to but spaced from the ends of the side 7 or end' 8 to which they are attached. Each i handle consists of a. relatively thin strip of material, and has its 'ends 10* disposedbetweenthe seams of the side or end and lthe top 5 and bottom 6 and secured thereto by the stitching B.
The invention further compris-es a pluralit-y'of reinforcing elements 11, each element being also formed from ticking or likek and disposed across the corner of 4 bottom or top as the case may'be, it being understood that these elements are 'respecvsed across each corner of both the bottom 6.. The ends 1'2 of these tively dis top 5 an elements are ends of the'handles 10 and the s eamed edge of the top bythe stitching B. These reinforcing ele- -ments 11 are also secured toith'e top -5 and bottom 6 by means of u series of stitchingsll.'
-.From the foregoing, itv will be observed that by means of the handles 10,. the sections -of the mattress can be easily folded one upon the other when it is desired to turn the mattress or carry the same from place to 'plat-e. It will also be noted that by means disposedbetween the adjacent or bottom, and secured in place handled will be prevented.
VlhatV is claimed is: A mattress including a fabric covering consisting,r of a top, bottom, sides and ends, Y
a pair of transversely disposed fabric hanture, in presence of two witnesses;
