HAT.
To all 'whom it may concern;
Be it k'iown that I,JEAN H. Ma'rsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Loomis, in the county of Phelps.v State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention` such as will enable others` skilled in the art to which it appertains to make. and use the Sti 1119.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hats. f5
-in object of this invention is the provision of a hat which is so constructed thatthe crown may be adjusted toward and away from the brim.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a hat which is provided with a removable crown, the said hat being of such construction `that it will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use and readily operated.
lith the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the noval features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improved hat with the crown in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the crown in its raised position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the crown raised. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the crown in its normal position, and Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the crown removed. l
Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved hat which consists of a brim 11 and a removable crown 12 of any desired shape er size. The brim 11 is provided with an upwardly extending peripheral fiange 13 to which is secured a plurality of clamping members 14, each of which consists of a continuous strand of wire bent at one side to produce a vertical attaching member 15 provided at its lower terminal with an inwardly directed prong 16 which engages the material at the lower end of the fiange 13 at its juncture with the brim 11 and being offset at its upper end as -Specification of Letters Patent.

at 17 and then ben-t downwardly as indicated by the numeral 18 in substantiallyparallel relation to the attaching member 15.
The downwardly extending portion 1S is provided at its opposite ends with a pair of inwardly extending offsets 19 which produce outwardly extending grooves 20 for engagement with a wire v21 secured to the lower inner edge of the crown 12 by means of suitable fastening devices 22. The inwardly directed prong 16 obviously holds the clamping member 14 against any undesired lateral movement, while in order to prevent its displacement. from the flange 13 fastening members 23 and 24 surround the' opposite ends thereof and engage the before n ientioucd flange 13. y
From the foregoing disclosures it Will be manifest that the depending member 18 is held yieldingly with respect to the flange 13 which formation perlnits the wire 21 to be forced downwardly into engagement with either of the notches formed therein. thereby permitting the crown to be seated upon the upper side of the brim 11, while engaged by the lower notch or in spaced relation thereto when engaged by the upper ofthe notches. lVhen the crown 12 is arranged in this last mentioned position a free circulation of air is admitted beneath the crown 12 through the space bet-Ween the lower edge thereof and the upper edge ofthe flange 13.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a hat of the nature described is produced which will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus particularly described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a hat., of a brim, a flange formed upon said brim, spring fastening devices secured upon the brlm and provided with spaced notches, a crownv and crown and a Wire secured to the said crown for engagement with the notchesin the spring fastening devices, substantially as and tor the purposes set forth.
The combination in a hat, of a brim, a peiipheral flange extending from said brim, spring fastening devices secured to the flange, said spring fastening devices comprising an attaching member, a prong extending from the end of the attaching member and engaging the material of the Harige,
fastening means surrounding the supporting o member and engaging the flange, a parallel I spring extension formed upon each clamping member and being odset to provide a plurality ot notches, a rown and a wire sei5 curedv to said crown and engaging the in testimony whereof, li ax my signa- 20 ture, in presence of two witnesses.
