Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 25, 1911. Serial No. 645,953.
Toall whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, Cmcs'rnn A. ANnnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mercersburg, in the county of Franklin. State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (late- Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly that type adapted for use in mounting fence gates.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a hinge which when associated with a gate will cause the free end of the latter to raise as the gate opened so as to clear any uneven ground or obstruction disposed in its path of travel.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of eonstruetion and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1. a front elevation of a gate in closed position having the improved hinge associated therewith, Fig. 2, a view in elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1 when the gate has been swung half way to full open position, Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the gate swung to full open position, Fig. 4, an enlarged front elevation of the lower hinge of the gate partly in section and with the parts thereof in the position they would occupy when the gate is completely closed, Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of the hinge illustrated in Fig. 4 with the parts in the position they would occupy when the gate has been swung substantially degrees from the closed position, and Fi 6, an enlarged section on the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings 10 and 11 indicate the gate posts, the former of which constitutes the supporting post of the gate while the latter carries the latch keeper 12. Mounted between the posts 10 and 11 is a gate 13 which is connected with the post 10 by a lower hinge A and an upper hinge 14:, the latter permitting sutlicient play between the gate and post to allow for the movements imparted to the gate by the hinge A during the opening and closing of said gate. A latch 15 is provided on the free end of the gate 13 for engagement with the keeper 12 to secure the gate in locked position.
The hinge A by means of which the free end of the gate 13 is elevated during the opening movement of the gate is shown as comprising a plate 16 adapted for detachable connection to the post 10. This plate is provided at each end with openings 17 and 18 in which a lug or block 19 is adapted to be interchangeably mounted, in this instance said block 19 is shown mounted in the opening 17. Pivotally supported upon the upper face of the block 19 is the inner end of a link 20 which is provided with a plurality of vertical openings 21. in which is adapted to be interchangeably inserted a pivot bolt 22. Disposed above the link 20 and supported thereby is a hinge strap 23 which has its inner end provided with spaced cars 24 and 25 and vertically journaled between said cars is a roller 26 for a purpose that will presently appear. Just inwardly of the ears 24 and 25 the hinge strap 23 is provided with a plurality of vertical openings 27 adapted to interchangeably receive the pivot bolt 22 so that the link 20 may be pivotally connected to the hinge strap 22 in different adjustments. The link 20 is provided in its upper face adjacent its pivotal connection with the block 19 with an opening 28 in which is mounted a stop pin 29 having an offset upper end 30 adapted to engage the adjacent inner end of the hinge strap during the opening movement of the gate and limit the movement of said inner end of the hinge strap beyond the plane of the link 20.
In order to open the gate 13 the latch 15 is disengaged from the keeper 12 and the gate swung outwardly. During the initial opening movements of the gate the roller 26 will bear against and slide across the plate 16 and this will result in the strap 23 and link 20 to approach positions at right angles to the plate 16 and during this movement of the link and hinge strap the inner end of the lower portion of the gate will be forced away from the post 10 which will result in the free end of the gate being elevated as clearly shown in Fig. 2. 16 the inner end of the hinge strap Will en gage the upper end 30 of the stop pin 29 and both the hinge strap 23 and the link 20 will move in unison to the position shown in Fig. 8. In closing the gate the operation just described is reversed.
What is claimed is:
1. A hinge comprising a plate having means for attachment to a support, a block projecting laterally from said plate, a link having its inner end pivotally supported by said block and a hinge strap pivotally connected at an intermediate point to said link so that the inner end of the hinge strap Will bear against said plate during the pivotal movement of said strap.
2. A hinge comprising a plate having means for attachment to a support, a block projecting laterally from said plate, a link having its inner end pivotally supported by said block, a hinge strap pivotally connected at an intermediate point to said link, and a roller mounted on the inner end of said hinge strap adapted to bear against said plate during the movement of the hinge strap.
3. A hinge comprising a plate having means for attachment to a support, a block projecting laterally from said plate, a link having its inner end pivotally supported by said block, a hinge strap, and means for pivotally connecting the hinge strap and link together at diiferent points in their lengths.
