HUMPI-IREY 0. PRITCI-IARD, 0F CARDIFF, MARYLAND.
ANCHOR-PLATE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HUMPHREY O. PRITCH- ARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cardiff, in the county of I-larford and State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Anchor- Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in anchor plates, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the brace of a fence post may be securely held in place to prevent the sagging of the post.
Another object of the invention is to produce an anchor plate which would be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, of few parts, light in weight but strong and durable, and one which may be readily and quickly placed in position upon the end of the brace and carrying means for attachment to a wire connecting member, which connecting member passes about a fence post, the brace being drawn thereto by twisting or coiling the strands of the wire connectin g member.
' With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of a fence post, showing my improved anchor plate applied thereto, and Fig. 2, a perspective view of the anchor plate.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, (1) represents a fence post having a notch 2 therein, in proximity to the upper end thereof. In this notch rests one end of the brace 3 beveled as at 4 to snugly fit within the notch 2. On the lower end of the brace 3 which is inclined as shown at Fig. 1, is mounted the anchor plate 5, comprising a metallic plate 6 bent laterally as at Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Aug. 6, 1912. Serial No. 612,145.
7, forming a base member vided with a perforation 9 and a side member 10. This base and side are braced and held securely in position by end members 11, each comprising a metallic strip having their ends bent as at 12 to overlap the side and base and being secured to the same by rivets or their equivalent 13. These end members are relatively narrow so that the entire space between the edges of the side and base are not entirely closed. Each of these end members is also provided with a perforation 14, and when placed upon the end of the brace may be firmlv held there by passing nails or their equiva ent through the perforations 9 and 14 into the brace.
To the side member, is securely fastened a strap 15 which comprises a piece of metal bent upon itself, one portion lying against the inner surface of the side member while the other portion engages the outer surface and has its end 18 bent at approximately right angles to rest upon the base in which position said strap is secured by rivets 16 or their equivalent.
lVhen the anchor plate has been mounted upon the lower end of the brace, a wire 17 is passed through the strap 15 around the post 1 adjacent the ground and the ends thereof fastened together so that two parallel strands run from the strap to the base, and by placing a bar or other instrument between the strands of wire they may be coiled about one another for drawing the anchor plate toward the post, in this way tightening the brace to prevent the sagging of the post.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
An anchor plate comprising a metallic plate bent laterally to produce a base and side, separate metallic end members having their ends bent to overlap the base and side members, said overlapping ends being riveted to the base of side members, and a strap, one portion of said strap lying against S which is pro- 7 the inner surface of the side member and aflixed my signature in the presence of tWo being rivet-ed thereto, the other portion ensubscribing Witnesses. gaging the outer surface of the side mem- HUMPHREY O PRITGHARD her and having its end bent at approxh mately right angles to contact With the base Witnesses: against Which it is riveted. ROBERT L. ROBERTS,
In testimony whereof, I have hereuntov IDA M. LLOYD.
