J. B. ROHE.
FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FII.EDJUNB17,1912.

FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented J une24, 1913.
' Application filed June '17, 1912. Sfirial No. X04332.
I '0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Bonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Templeton, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a post of sheet metal folded, constructed and arranged in such a way as .to produce a post having a maximum of strength and a minimum of weight and material.
A further object is to provide such a post equipped with fastening devices of simple and inexpensive construction whereby wires may be quickly, easily and firmly secured to the post and from which the wires may be easily released and'remomidi My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, 'pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a post embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows an end elevation of same. Fig. 3 shows a hori zontal section through the post. i Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of one of the catch 4 devices and Fig. 5 shows a detail view of part of one of the catch devices.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the sheet metal body of the post which is composed of a sheet folded longitudinally to form a double portion A. The sides of the sheet are then extended fatobtuse angles front the portion A, forming the portions B. The folded parts of the post are secured together by means of rivets 11 or the like. It will be seen that in cross section my post 1m the form of a three pointed star. It will also be seen that the form of my post and its const-ructionnenable me to secure a maximum of strength and a maximum of surface where the post is placed in the ground, combined with a minimum of 7 weight and material.
For securing fence wires to my post, I provide the following means: In t-he outer edge of the folded portion of my post, I provide a plurality of slots 12, which extend inwardly and downwardly: At the .bottoinof each slot 1'2, I preferably provide, a sllghtly enlarged portion 13. Fence wires may be inserted in the slots 12 and will rest in the portions 13 and be held imposition by the weight of the wire. I have,"however, provided the following means for easily and firmly securing the wires in the slots 13. Substantially on a horizontal line with ref crence to each of the portions 13, and spaced apart therefrom on the side next to the middle of the post, I provide an approximately round hole 14. Extending downwardly and toward the middle of the post from the hole 14 is a slot 15. Detachably mounted in the hole 14 and the slot 15 is a catch device which preferably comprises a short rod 16 having at one end a hook member 17 and having at the other end an extension 18 at right angles to the plane in which the rod 16 and the hook 17 lie. At the end of the extension 18 is a second ex tension 19 at right angles to the extension 18. The slot 15 is narrower in Width than the diameter of the hole 14. The extension 18 is designed to fit the hole 11 so, as to turn freely therein. The extension 18 is is-designed to fit the slot '15, The catch member is so constructed that in installing it, the extension 19 is placed adjacent to the slot 15 with the portion 16 extending. downwardly and outwardly from the middle of the post, as shown at the top of Fig. 1.
The extension 19 is then inserted through the slot 15 with the extension 18 received in the hole 14. In fastening a wire to the, post, the portion 16 and thehookmember 1'7.are raised above the level of the sl t 913, the
wire is placed in the slot 13 andthe hook preferably angular and of narrower width than-the diameter of the extension 18 and ioe tance from one of said slots, and with slots the side of the post and to prevent the. reextending away from said holes, Withcatch moval of the fastenin device therefrom. 1 devices mounted in said holes, each com- Des Moines,'Iowa, ey 11, 1912.
prising a short rod, a, hook member on one i T end thereof, a right angled extension on the JOHN BERI ARD ROHE' 4 other end thereof, designed to be received Witnesses: I in said hole and a; right angled extension 1 JOSEPH N. Lonurz, on said first extension designed to engage ORREN W. EMMONS.
