ATTLST UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH J. DEVENS, OE COLDVATER, ASSIGNOR OE TWO-THIRDS 'IO JAMES S. DEWEY AND CHARLES E. YOUNG, BOTH OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Fabiola-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\To.361,001I dated April 12, 1887,
Application cica February 3,1687. serial No. 226,346. (No modem To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH J. DEvENs, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county'of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use- ,ful Improvements in Fence-Posts, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the general construction of a metallic fence-post made in two sections and in the manner of anchoring the wlres to said post, the object being to construct a cheap and lasting fence, `and one that may be readily put up or removed; and my invention consists in the construction of parts as hereinafter set forth, and indicated particularly in the claims.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specication, Figure 1 shows a section of fencing containing my invention. Fig. 2 is an en-v larged perspective of the fence-post. Eig. 3 shows the lower end of the body of the post. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the head or base. Fig. 5 is a perspective ofthe metal link for binding the wire to the post.
vIn the drawings, I? represents the post, which is composed of two partsthe body B and base or head H. Said part-s are made of sheet metal, preferably sheet-steel.
The body of the post is V-shaped in crosssection. The side wings or fianges, a a, are fiat, and are cut away at the lower end, forming the shoulders e e. (See Fig. 3.) The holes 2 2 at the lower end are for rivets or bolts to attach the body to the base H of the post, which has also corresponding holes, 2. Y
I form in the angle of the body B a series of openings or holes, d, by punching out of the body or bending over upon itself the metal, i
forming the strengthening-flanges t' t'.
n represents the strands of fencing wire,
- a strong support when driven in.
which I secure to the post by means of the link D, which consists of au oblong closed link folded at the center, the free'ends forming the mouth m. The link is then placed astride the Wire u. Its free ends are passed through an opening, d, ofthe post. Then, by inserting the wedges S through the free looped ends of the linkV at the back of the post and within the angle, and by driving down on the wedge, the link D iscaused to grasp the wire strand 'n at two points, thus forming a double-link fasten.- ing, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The base H of the post is formed from a single sheet of metal, and in the blank is of a triangular form. The Wings Z Z have a tapering edge, t, and at the center, as shown at :v of Eig. gi, the wings start from each other at right angles. Each wing is concavo-conveX in'cross-section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The form is to enable the base to freely enter the soil, (especially in clay soil,) and to form The lower endof the base at f is S-shaped in cross-section.
The postl is to be driven into the soil, thus dispensing with the digging of a hole for its insertion.
When the soil is very hard, the body B may be detached from the base, and by placing on the upper end of the base a lead or wood follower the base may be easily driven into the. ground, when the body may be attached by means of bolts or rivets through the holes 2.
It will be observed that the sides 5 5 of the post stand at right angles to each other. The holes d, formed in the angle of the post, give the wires or strands n two bearings. The doubled link D has two bearings on the strand n, and has also two bearings on the wedge S, thus forming a strong and cheap fastening.
Having set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metallic fence-post consisting of the part ISN-shaped in cross-section, and having the series of perforations d, and lianges ct a, having the shoulders c e, in combination with the base H, having the tapering wings Z Z, adapted to be attached to the part B, as and conoavo-eonvex in cross-section, and bolts or for the purposes specified. Io rivets for attaching said parts, as specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 2. The metal -post consisting of the part B, presence of two witnesses. 5 V-shaped in cross-section, and having the se- ELIJAH J. DEVENS.
