To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HUGO FRANZKY and JOSEPH Vvrnozonnn, subjects of the German Emperor, and residents of 2 Bolkostrasse, Liegnitz, Silesia, Germany, and 27 Bahnhofstrasse, Haynau, Silesia, Germany, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Reins, Leashes, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a holder for the reins or leashes of teams left alone and the like. It is a known fact, that the running away of teams left alone may frequently have been avoided if a safe means of securing the reins or leashes had been at disposal.

The present invention has the object to provide such means.

The arrangement consists essentially in a clamping device fitted to the carriage or the like in a detachable manner, which device can be operated by means of a hand lever. The latter is preferably fitted to an elastic plate which will clasp the reins or leashes. The operating lever for the clamping device is preferably elastically journaled, so as to allow of a convenient manipulation. The provision is preferably made that the clamping device may be secured to one or the other side of the carriage as the case may require.

In the accompanying drawing the present invention is exemplified in a constructional form.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device opened; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device while in use; Fig. 3 shows the device fitted to a carriage.

To the side 1 of the carriage or at any other suitable part a plate 2 is secured by means of screws or the like. This plate is provided with one or several eyes 3, in which the clamping device proper is fixed. The latter consists in the constructional form shown of a U-shaped strap 4:, the one leg of which has a number of hooks 5 corresponding to the said eyes 8, into which said hooks 5 are hung. On the inside of the same leg of the strap 4.- and at a suitable distance therefrom is arranged an elastic plate 6. Between this plate and the respective leg of the strap 4: the reins or leashes a are passed and held securely in their position by the elastic plate 6 being clamped against them. For increasing the safety, the surfaces of the plate 6 and the leg of the strap spring on said hooks adapted to between which the reins are clamped may be provided with corrugations, points and the like.

F or pressing the plate 6 against the leg of the strap 4 a hand lever is provided, which is pivoted on a pin 7 to the second leg of the strap 4-. This lever is double armed and its outer end 8 serves as a handle, while the second arm 9 acts on the elastic plate 6. By pressing down the hand lever 8 the leash a is securely clasped. In consequence of its shape the lever 8, 9 is secured in its position against being unintendedly moved (Fig. 2). For facilitating the opening of lever 8, 9 and for avoiding too great a strain on the pin 7, the cars 10 carrying the same are elastically secured to the leg of the strap. These ears penetrate for this purpose the leg of the strap with a pin 11, on the end of which a spring 12 is arranged. The said spring 11 is secured by means of a nut or plate 13.

For preventing the clamping device from jumping out of the eyes 3 while the carriage is moving, one or several of the hooks 5 are provided with a clasping spring 14 of suitable shape.

The plate 2 with the eyes 3 is preferably provided on both sides of the carriage, so that the clamping device may be attached at will on either side.

The device according to the present invention may also be made of a smaller size and be attached to the saddle of a riding horse for holding the reins of the latter. The rider will then have both hands free for other purposes, such as reading a card, writing or the like and yet have the reins ready at hand at any moment.

lVe claim:

1. A rein-holder comprising in combination a U-shaped strap, adapted to be detachably fixed to a wall of a carriage, etc., an elastic plate arranged inside of said strap and having its one end fixed to one leg of said strap, a bearing movably connected to the other leg of said strap, springs for holding said bearing in position, and a twoarmed lever journaled in said bearing and having its one arm acting on said elastic plate, substantially as set forth.

2. A. rein-holder comprising in combination a lJ-shaped strap, hooks secured to said strap and adapted to be engaged into eyes fixed to a wall of a carriage, etc., a clasping secure the latter in said eyes, an elastic plate arranged inside of said strap and having its one end fixed to one leg of said strap, a bearing movably connected to the other leg of said strap, springs for holding said bearing in position, and a two-armed lever 'jonrnaled in said bearing and having its one arm acting on said elastic plate, substantially as set forth.
