THREAD-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 17, 1912.
Patented Aug. 6,1212. Serial No. 678,293.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL C. Hccrm- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yates, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ThreadCutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in thread cutters and more particularly to a device adapted to be operated by a bit brace or other similar tool, and used for cutting threads on bolts, small rods, etc., and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that when the required number of threads have been cut on the bolt, the bolt will release itself from the dies by engagement with the clamping member which holds the dies in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of eiiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings; in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. t is a sectional view on the line 4. 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the cylindrical body having a stem 2 formed integral with one end thereof, said stem having a substantially rectangular head 8 formed thereon adapted to be inserted in the socket of a brace. The body 1 is bifurcated to form the open ended slots 1, and the rigid jaws 5,said jaws being provided with the recesses 6 having grooves 7 formed therein. Thread cutting dies 8 are slidably mounted in the recesses 6 and provided on each side with the flanges 9 adapted to be disposed in the grooves 7 said dies having their meeting ends provided with the semicircular threaded recesses 10 adapted to form a circular opening when the inner ends of the dies are brought together. The upper ends of the slots 4 are provided with the recesses llnadapted to receive one end of the leaf springs 12 which are secured to the body 1 by means of the screws 13. The outer ends of the dies are provided with the recesses 14 adapt-ed to receive the other ends of said springs which are held in place by means of the screws 13, said springs being adapted to normally hold said dies in an open position.
Elongated slots 15 are formed in the sides of the body and arranged in opposed rela tion, said slots being adapted to receive the movable bar 16 having its ends disposed be yond the outer side of the body. Guide lugs 17 are formed on the side edges of said bar at its central portion and arranged in the slots 1.
A clamping ring 18 is slidably mounted on the body and provided with the cars 19 formed on opposite sides of the ring and having the threaded openings 20 formed therein to receive the adjusting screws 21, said screws having their ends threaded into the threaded openings 22 formed in the ends of the bar 16. Jam nuts 23 are threaded on the screws 21 and bearing against the washers 2-1 arranged between the nuts and cars 19, said nuts being adapted to hold the screws in various adjusted positions.
In cutting threads on bolts or other similar devices, the clamping ring is moved downwardly to force the dies 8 to a closed position, the body 1 is then rotated, threading the dies on to the end of the bolt, cutting the thread on the boltas it travels along it until the end of the bolt has passed into the body far enough so that it strikes the bar 16, forcing the same upward and carrying the ring 18 with it, thus releasing the springs 12 which force the dies apart and releases the bolt. The bolt during the thread cutting operation is to be securely clamped against rotary movement in a vise or similar tool. 'Any desired number of threads may be cut on the bolts or rods by the adjustment of the bar 16 upon the screws 21.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of my improved thread cutting device will be readily understood.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
What I claim is In combination with a thread cutting device, having movable cutting dies carried thereby, of a clamping ring, having ears formed thereon and arranged atdiametrically opposite points, said ears having threaded openings formed therein, adjusting screws threaded into said openings, a cross bar, having threaded openings formed in its ends to receive the ends of the adjusting screws, said cross bar being adapted for adjustment on said screws according to the number of threads to be cut by the cutting dies.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL C. HECKAMAN.
