Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 11,1906- Serial N- 330,251-
Patented. June 18, 1907.
wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench having V-shaped integral, or alligator aws, mounted on a pivot, and a springactuated dog, for engaging ratchet teeth, on I said wrench, whereby the head containing the jaws, may be set at various angles, for
engaging nuts or pipes of difficult accessibility.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in-the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Wrench constructed in accordance with'this inven tion. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is aview similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the handle of the wrench, to which is secured plates 2 and 3, which are designed to hold a spring-actuated dog. The spring-actuated dog is mounted in a slot in the handle and is beveled at its outer end whereby it is enabled to engage the teeth 5 of the wrench-head 6, and hold it at the desired adjustment. The wrench head is pivotally mounted on a heavy rivet, 7 which pierces both plates and the handle. The wrench head is preferably alligator or Vshaped, and is provided with teeth or serrations on one of the jaws. The dog 8 which operates in a slot in the handle, between the two plates, is held in engageverse slots 11 and 12.
ment with the ratchet teeth 5 by means of a spring 9. When it is desired to release the wrench-head from the spring-actuated dog, a projecting lug 10 is pressed against the spring, and the dog then releases the pivoted wrench-head, which enables the same to be set at another angle.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, a modification is shown, which shows the plate2 with trans- The slot 12 admits of a slight oscillation, of the plate 2 when it is desired to lock the dog in engagement with the wrench-head 6, as will be readily understood.
What I claim is,
1. A wrench having a slotted handle,
plates mounted on each sideof said handle, a V-shaped wrench head pivoted between one of said plates and the handle, a spring-actu ated dog mounted in said slot, and adapted to hold said Wrench head at the desired adjustment, said plates being adapted to form a housing for said dog, substantially as described.
2. Ina Wrench, the combination with a movable head pivoted to a handle, a dog mounted in said. handle, and having a spring for holding the same in engagement with the head, plates mounted on each side of said handle, and adapted to guide said dog in its movements, one of said plates being slotted and capable of oscillatory motion, said dog having a lug projecting through said slot, for releasing said dog, said slot being L-shaped for the purpose of locking said dog in engagement with said head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EGBERT H. DERBY.
