A. B; WBSTBURG. BRUSH AND MOP HOLDER. PLIOATION FILED DEO.11, 1911.
333 97 2, Patented July 30, 1912.
operating mm) are s 1 ARTHUR'E. WESTIBURG, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
BRUSH AND MOP HOLDER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed December 11, 1911. Serial No. 664,930.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. WEST- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and 'State of New York, have invented cer- 'as shown in this specification and the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the head of the brush or mop holder with a brush clamped therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same Without the brush. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the ratchet and lever mechanism, a portion being broken away to show the action of the ratchet. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation ofthe ratchet pawl. Fig. 5 is a plan viewof the inner side of the clamping lever.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the handle to which the clampin jaws 12 and 13 are at-- tached by means 0 a ferrule or hollow tip 1-1.- The ferrule 11 is preferably a continuation of the clamping jaw 12 so that said jaw extends out stittly from the end of the handle 10. p
The jaw I3 of the clamp is formed with a pair of arms 15 which extend each side of the neck of the jaw 12 and are pivotally attached thereto at- 11. -A wire link 16 extends through the ends of the arms 15 and along each side of the handle 10 to a clamping lever 17. The lever 17 is preferably made of sheet metal and pivotally attached on opposite sides of the handle 10 to a slidably mounted sleeve 18 by means of trunnions 19, suitable lugs being provided on the semi-circular end of the lever 17 for attaching to trunnions 19. The link 16 is given a sufiicient clearance around said trunnions so as to work freely back and forth over the same.
The sleeve 18 is preferably made of sheet Patented July 30,1912.
metal and slidably mounted on the handle 10 and is not continuous being slotted at 20 the edges of the: sheet. metal being bent outwardly from thehandle 10 into the parallel lugs 21 and a pawl 22 is pivotally attached at 23 between the lugs 21. A toothed strip or rack 24 is attached to the'handl'e il') so that the teeth 25 extend up within the slot 20 and the pawl22 is provided with teeth 26 which mesh in teeth 25, but may be turned.
therefrom permitting the sleeve 18 to slide back and forth freely upon the handle 10" in adjusting jaws 12 and 13 to the brush.
In operating the clamping jaws,
teeth 26 are engaged upon the teeth 25 at that point which causes the lever 17 to draw the jaws 12 and 13 firmly upon the brush or mop cloth and'the lever is then sprung from the open position, as shown in Fig. 3, against the handle 10, as shown in F g. 1, thereby firmly holding the brush or, mop cloth'yet-permitting of their quick and convenient removal by the release of the lever and pawl.
I claim as new 1. A device of the class described comprising a handle, a jaw attached to said handle, a second jaw pivotally attached across the first jaw to give a leverage, ratche't teeth on said handle, a sleeve slidably mounted on said handle having a slot .to receive said ratchet teeth, a pawl pivotally mounted on said sleeve to engage said ratchet teeth, a
lever on said sleeve, and link connection between said lever and said pivotally attached jaw to actuate the same and form a clamp.
2. A device of the character described comprising a handle, a jaw rigidly attached to said'handle, a second jaw pi-votally at-' tached to the neck of said rigidly attached jaw and coinciding therewith to form a clamp ratchet teeth on said handle, a sleeve slidably mounted on said handle having a lengthwise slot to reccivesaid ratchet teeth, lugs on. said sleeve each side of said slot, a
the pawl I toothed pawl' ivotally mounted between In testimony whereof I have afi'lxed my said lugs to (imis in salid ratchet tialeth, trun-' signature in the presence of two Witnesses;
nion's on 'sai s eeve, a ever pivota y mount-- ed -on said trunnions, and. link connection 1 A T WESTBUBG' B bet-Ween said lever and said Pivotally meunt- I I Witnesses:
