FOLDING CHICKEN-COOP.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, CHARLES A. BREW- sTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kaw, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chicken- Coops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to folding coops, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a coop which may be very readily set up and which, when folded, will form a very compact mass so that it will occupy a minimum amount of space when being shipped.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the coop in a set up position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the coop in a folded position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the coop in a set up position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional 'view through the folded coop. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one end of the coop showing the tongues which assist in locking the coop. Fig. 6 is a sectional view through the end of one of the covers showing the locking pin for the coop.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this coop comprises a flooring 10 to which there is secured the side strips 11. The side strips are approximately twice as high as the thickness of t-he material from which they are made, so that when the end walls 12 and covers 13 are folded down they will completely fill the space within the side strips. The end walls 12 are pivotally mounted between the side strips by means of the hinges 14k, and when folded lie iat upon the `flooring 10. The side walls 15 are hinged to the sidestrips by means of the hinges 16 and the covers 13 are secured to the side walls by means of the hinges 17. A door 18 is carried by one of the covers and is provided with a latch 19 so that the door may be held closed, the latch being normally held in a locked position by means of the spring 20. Each of the end walls carries a strip of metal which is doubled to form the spaced tongues 21 and the securing feet 22. The strip is secured at the center of the end wall and the tongues engage the doors so that they will be held upon the end walls. Each of the doors has its corner provided with a cut-out portion 23 and with a metallic strip 211 which is secured to the edge faces of the door and converts the cut-out portion 23 into a pocket through which one of the tongues 21 passes. An opening 25 is formed in the end of one of the doors and communicates with a socket 26 from which extends the slots 27. A plate 28 is secured to the door and is provided with tongues y29 which are bent down into the slots 27. These tongues form liners for the slots thus protecting the slots from wear. A securing pinv 30 is slidably mounted in the opening 25 and is adapted to pass through the openings formed in the strips 24, and tongues 21 so that the doors will be held in a locked position. The spring 31 is mount-- ed upon the pin 30 and bears against the handle 32, so that the pin will be normally held in an extended position, the pin is rotatably mounted in the opening 25 so that when the pin is moved to a locked or unlocked position, the handle may be turned into one of the slots 27 thus holding the pin in the desired position.

When shipping this coop the end doors are folded down upon the flooring and the covers are then turned in upon the side walls and the covers and side walls folded down upon the end walls. The end walls and covers take up the space formed by the side strips and form a support for the side walls so that a very compact mass is formed. l/Vhen it is desired to'use the coop the side walls and covers are raised and the end walls then raised, the covers are now folded down upon the end wall with the tongues 21 passing through the cut-out portions 23. The pins 30 are now released and the springs 31 will force them through the openings formed in the strips 24 and tongues 21 thus securely holding the coop ina set up position.

The door 18 may be raised when desired to obtain access to the interior of the coop but is norlnally held closed by the spring latch 19.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A coop comprising a body portion, covers hinged to said body portion, the free end corners of said covers having longitudinally extending notches cut therein, bands secured to the edges of said covers and inclosing said notches to form pockets, strips secured to said body-portion and bowed to form spaced prongs adapted to pass through said pockets when said 4covers are closed,

and bolts slidably mounted in one of said covers and adapted to pass through openings formed in said prongs and said firstmentioned strips to hold said covers in a locked position.

2.l A coop comprising abody portion, covers hinged to said body portion and having slots formed adjacent their ends forming pockets, one of said covers being provided With a transversely extending opening adjacent each end communicating with said pocket, and With an opening formed adja- ,cent its center and communicating With the Copies of this patent may be obtained for inner end of said first-mentioned opening, slots leading from said last-mentioned opening, a metallic reinforcing strip secured to said cover and having tongues struck therefrom and bent down into said last mentioned slots, arms extending from said body portion and adapted to pass through the pockets formed in said covers and provided With openings formed in alinement with the lirstmentioned opening formed in said cover, a bolt slidably mounted in said rst -mentioned opening and adapted to pass through said arms to hold said covers in a closed position, a spring` surrounding said bolt and normally holding said bolt in an extended position, and an operating rod extending from said bolt and adapted to be turned into the slots leading from said second-mentioned opening to hold said bolt in a position to release said doors.
