To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN Rosno, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Boxes and Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foldable boxes and trunks.

The primary object of the device is to provide a storage or shipping receptacle capable of folding in a compact form for storage or other similar purposes.

A further object is to provide a container having inwardly foldable ends and separately foldable side members for inclosing the same and positioning the entire structure in a compact folded formation removably locked together.

A still further object is to provide a container that may be employed when desired for carrying or shipping goods positioned therein but when emptied may be folded up so as to take up but little room and latched in such position.

-With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughput the several views :F igure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the front lids in their open position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the closed box, a portion of the same being broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is an end view of the folded box partly broken away, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of the box when partly folded together.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the rear wall 10 of the box is disclosed as provided with end walls 11 hinged thereto by the hinges 12 and foldable inwardly toward each other for lying flatly against the inner face of said rear wall, and at such times positioned between the upper wall strip 13 and the lower wall strip 14, the said strips being rigidly secured to and projecting forwardly from said rear wall 10. With the end walls in their unfolded positions, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the same are so retained by means of hooks 15 adapted to engage in eyes 16 upon the top wall 17 and bottom wall 18, which walls are hinged respectively, to the upper and lower wall strips 13 and 14 and form with said strips the complete top and bottom of the box. The bottom wall 18 is provided with an upwardly-extending front strip 19 hingedly secured thereto and having a front wall section 20 hinged to its upper outward edge, said front wall section provided with projecting pins 21 adjacent its opposite ends adapted for seating reception within sockets 22 formed in the front edges of the end walls 11. The top 17 is provided with a front strip 23 hinged thereto and forming a diagonal joint therewith.

The front wall section 20 is provided with va staple 24 for receiving the hasp member 25 carried by the front strip 23 while the box is retained closed through the engagement of said hasp with said staple by means of the padlock 26.

The complete assembling of the box is be lieved to be apparent from the above detailed description, in that the members are respectively hinged together as described and are retained in their operative set up positions by means of the hooks 15 and the engagement of the pins 21 within the sockets 22, and are locked for preventing the unauthorized opening of the box by means of the hasp and staple and the padlock.

When desired to fold up the structure, the hasp being released, the hooks 15 are disengaged from the eyes 16 and the ends 11 folded inwardly upon the inner face of the rear wall 10, whereupon the front strip 19 and the front wall 20 are folded down inwardly engaging the inner face of the bottom 18 and are together -foldable upon hinges 27 to a position flatly engaging the folded ends 11 and with the staple 24 posi tioned between the slightly separated adjacent edges of said ends 11. The bottom wall strip being shorter than the upper wall strip, then allows the top 17 to be flatly folded upon the folded bottom 18, and with the front strip 23 unhinged to a position in substantial alinement with said top 17 as best illustrated in Fig. 4:, and in which position the hasp 25 is adapted to engage a turn button 40 positioned substantially centrally of the lower face of the bottom wall strip 14, a bottom slot 41 of the hasp being adapted to receive said button 40 therethrough, and upon the turning of said button, to securely lock the box in its com pletely folded positions. It is to be further noted that in the folded position, the pins 21 are adapted to seat in sockets 42 formed at opposite points in the bottom 18. This structure provides a box that may be locked closed when assembled, and may be also retained or locked in its folded or knock-down position.

lVhile the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

lVhat is claimed as new is A device of the class described, comprising a rear Wall, an upper and a lower wall strip of different widths rigidly secured thereto, a top hinged to the inner edge of said upper wall strip, a front wall hinged hasp centrally carried by said front strip, a

bottom hinged to the inner edge of said bottom wall strip, a front strip hinged to the inner edge of said bottom, a front wall strip hinged to the outer edge of said front strip, inwardly projecting pins carried by the opposite ends of said front wall strip, a staple projecting outwardly from said front wall strip and adapted for the reception of said hasp, inwardly swinging end walls hinged to the inner face of said rear wall and provided with sockets in their front edges adapted for the reception of said pins with the box in its closed positions, eye members carried by the opposite inner faces of said top and bottom, and hooks carried by said end walls interiorly thereof and adapted for reception within said eyes.
