Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. FERNAN- DEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Combination Collapsible Shipping-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to receptacles, and more particularly to the class of combination shipping cases.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shipping case wherein the same can be converted from a box or the like into a crate so that either non-perishable or perishable goods can be packed therein for shipment from one point to another.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a shipping case wherein the cover or lid thereof can be partially or entirely opened to enable the convenient filling or packing of the body of said case, the

'hinges connecting the cover or lid to the body being of novel form to allow the said cover or lid to be easily and quickly manipulated.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a case of this character wherein the same can be readily and easily converted, as well as folded when not in use so as to assume a compact form and thereby occupy the least possible space for transportation from one point to another when not in use.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a case of this character wherein the same can be easily and quickly set up for use and will be prevented from collapsing while set up.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a case of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eihcient, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, com bination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the case comprises a body including a bottom 10 which is made in the form of a solid base, preferably wood, to opposite longitudinal edges of which are fixed permanent side strips 11 and 12 respectively, the strip 11 being of greater depth than the strip 12 to permit the folding of the side walls or sections 13 which are hinged to both of the said strips, each having stationary and removable slats 14 and 15, which are held in place by means of intermediate and outer cross straps 16 which are fixed to the stationary slats 14 in any suitable manner. Each of the outer straps 16 is formed with an inturned flange 17 providing an abutment for the removable slats 15 when placed between the stationary slats. Secured to the stationary slats 14 at the inner sides are the swinging leaf sections 18 of the hinges which are formed with pintle terminals 19 loosely engaging in inverted substantially U-shaped clips 2O mounted upon the respective permanent strips 11 and 12 so that the side walls or sections can be folded inwardly one above the other at right angles thereto, or can swing outwardly in alinement with the permanent strips when the receptacle or case is set up. The clips 2O are cut away to form slots 21, the width of the leaf sections 18, so as not to interfere with the swinging thereof 'when folding or unfolding the side walls or sections, while the leaf sections 18 are formed with bendable tongues 22 which engage the innermost permanent slats and are bent about one edge of each to assist in fastening the said leaf sections thereto.

Secured to opposite ends of the bottom 10 are reinforcing angle plates 23 provided with slots 24 through which project pintle eyes 25 of hinge plates 26 fixed to the inner faces of the end walls or sections 27, each formed with permanent and removable slats 28 and 29 respectively, the eyes 25 being engaged with pintles 30 held in place by the reinforcing plates 23. These end walls or sections 27 are adapted to fold inwardly beneath the side walls or sections when folded.

Secured to the end walls or sections 27-are substantially L-shaped catches 31 which are adapted to engage the leaf sections 18 of the hinges connecting the side walls or sections to the permanent strips 11 and 12 on the bottom, the said leaf sections 18 serving as keepers for the catchesV so as'to vlock the end walls in vertical position and connected to the side walls when the case is set up.

Swingingly connected to one side wall or section is a lid orcover comprising two sections 32 and 33 respectively, the same being connected through the' medium of strap hinges 34 so that the section 33 can be swung to open or closed position independently of the movement of the section 32, the section 33 being formed with permanent and removable slats 35 and 36 respectively, while lixed to the outer face ofthe permanent slats 35 are inner and outer cross straps 37, one outer strap of which is formed with an inturned flange 38 forming an abutment for the removable slats 36 when placed between the permanent slats.

Fixed to the section 32 at the inner face thereof are hinge plates 39 formed with spaced extensions 40 provided with oppositely extending right-angular pintles 41 which loosely engage with substantially inverted U-shaped lreeper members 42, the same'being formed with openings 43 through which project the said extensions 40 to allow the swinging of the section 32 in alinement with the rear side wall or section or at right angles'thereto, the members 42 being formed intheir outer faces with elongated slots 44 which permit the projecting of the pintles 41 therethrough when sliding the section 32 ove'rthe top edge'of the side wall or section adj'a'cent thereto when closing the said sections 3'2Iand 33 respectively.

Fixed to the front edge of the section 33 medially thereof is a swingingV hasp V45 for the fastening of the cover or lid in closed position and also to secure the case when collapsed to prevent the unfolding thereof. When the case is setup and its lid closed the hasp 45 engages a keeperv 46 mounted in the intermediate strap 16 on one side of the body,vand on the folding of the case the said hasp yisengaged with the keeper 49 mounted on the strip 11 carried by the bottom ofthe case.l

1t will be apparent that when the removable slats in the cover or lid and the sideand end walls are detached the case can be used as a crate for shipping perishable goods.

Connected tothe bottom 10 through the medium of ahinge 47 is a foldable partition 48, which when raised at right angles to said bottom divides the body of the case into independent compartments, the partition 48 being designed to be folded onto the bottom when not in use. The partition 48 is raised and disposed at right angles to the bottom 10 of the case and when the goods are placed within the independent compartments Vthe said partition will be prevented from falling orswinging onto the bottom as the case will hold the said partition in its adjusted position.
