FIG. 1
WITNESSES I3 INVENTOR WW BY i ATTORNEYS I LASLO NAGY, 0F SHARPSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed March 14, 1912. Serial No. 683,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LASLO NAcY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Sharpsville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hatpin point protectors, and the objects of my invention are first, to provide a device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a hatpin for preventing pedestrians from being injured when contacting with the pin; second, a device that prevents accidental displacement of a hatpin relatively to a hat; third, a combined guard and lock that can be used in connection with a scarf, breast or other type of pin, and fourth, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and susceptible to any desired ornamentation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a hatpin provided with a device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the device.
A hatpin point protector in accordance with this invention is in the form of a head comprising sections 1 and 2 having flat abutting faces 8. The inner ends of the sect-ions 1 and 2 are shaped to provide an annular flange 4:, and the flat face 3 of the section 1 has a longitudinal groove 5 with the inner end thereof flared, as at 6 and the outer end terminating in a rectangular recess 7 in proximity to the outer end of said section. The flat face 3 of the section 2 has a longitudinal recess 8, a portion of which is enlarged, as at 9, the enlarged portion of said recess terminating in the flange 4 of said section to provide an entrance opening 10 for the pointed end of a pin 11. The outer end of the recess 8 terminates in a rectangular recess 12 that confronts the recess 7 of the section 1, said recesses accommodating a block or piece of yieldable material 13, as rubber, to receive the pointed end of the pin 11.
Mounted in the recess 8 by screws 14 or other fastening means is one end of a spring 15, said spring having the opposite end thereof curved, as at 16 and beveled, as at 17 to engage the pointed end of the pin 11, said pin having a spiral groove 18 to receive the beveled curved end of the spring 16.
The sections 1 and 2 are connected together by rivets 19 or other fastening means, said rivets being carried by the section 2 and extending into openings 20 provided therefor in the section 1.
The pointed end of the pin 11 can be easily inserted in the entrance opening 10 and frictionally engaged by the spring 15. The beveled curved end of the spring engages in the spiral groove 18 and by rotating the pin or the protecting device, the protecting device is looked upon the pin whereby it cannot become accidentally displaced. The sectional head can be made of light and durable metal or other suitable material and is susceptible to any desired ornamentation.
What I claim is In a hatpin point protector, the combination with a hatpin having the pointed end thereof provided with a spiral groove, of a sectional head having flat faces abutting and recessed for the passage of the pointed end of said pin, said flat faces further provided with recesses, a yieldable block arranged in said last mentioned recesses in the flat faces of said sectional head to receive the pointed end of said pin, and a spring arranged in one of said sections and having the end thereof curved and beveled to engage in the spiral groove of said pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LASLO NAGY.
